Post subject:  Karaoke Unplugged - Small Venues
There are numerous discussions setting up a system for maximum output
15"mains on top of 18" subs pushing 5000 watts  Yada  Yada Yada.

Besides the BOSE PS1 system ( which would be Ideal)

What would a KJ do to set up in a smaller venue , more of a SOFTER type of Karaoke !? - Restaurant area maybe in where people are seated rather than standing etc. A set up that would not be OVERPOWERING the venue ?

Can you use the same equipment ?  Would using a 500watt Amp with 15" speakers
with the volume turned down do any harm?  Would the sound be as CLEAN at low volume as it would at a HIGHER volume ?  Would using a completely differant setup be better ( ie Fender Passport or similiar) . Using 8",10" or 12" speakers versus 15"

Let's discuss .....

I'd personally use the same system, your volume control is your mixer, don't turn it up as high, leaving the amp still wide open.  You will definitely need to eq for a smaller room, may not need as much low end.  If there is a space issue where you couldn't get the larger speakers, i'd opt for the B52 Matrix system & maybe leave the amp rack at home.

I am currently talking to 2 local places - both are RESTAURANTS who are looking for some Karaoke after 9PM when the "eating" crowd thins out a little. They both have a BAR in the dinning area but don't want the MUSIC /SINGING TOO LOUD.
I wasn't sure if turning the volume down on my current system if I would LOSE any sound.  I probably wouldn't bring my 15" speakers but use some Peavey PR12'sI have and use from time tp time for smaller DJ gigs.  There not bad speakers but I like the bass in the Yamahas for the larger BAR gig.  If I do land these gigs I'll probably end up getting another BOX type powered mixer for space and ease of set up.  My fear is having enough volume to be heard by everyone but NOT over powering for those table closer to the speakers ?

I know the BOSE system would be ideal but can not justify the $2000 right now.

Well just something to ponder, make sure you don't skimp your power.  Make sure the amp is still rated for the speaker - fuller, clearer sound at lower listening levels.  I did a lounge (mostly restaurant) a few years back in which all I was running was 2 15" 2 ways - still biamped however - 500 watts per on low driver/200 watts per on compresion driver, sound wasnt so loud that it blasted everyone, but it didn't sound thin/tinny either.  The area I was set up in seated maybe 16-20 & the bar I was aimed at sat about 10 more.  Funny thing is they said they same thing - not so much volume, but I'm telling you what, by the end of the night, the place was almost standing room only & the volume was up as high as I would set it in larger rooms with not any complaints.  Actually WISHED I would've had at least 1 sub tucked in somewhere.

Thanks - Well if I get the gig I will bring my reg set up and see how it goes
from there.  I was mostly just inquiring how one would set up for a
smaller "intimate" setting versus a bass thumping bar setting.

The problem for me is always the people closest to the speaker complain its too loud and the people in the back of the room keep telling me to TURN IT UP.
I guess its just the way it is !

Karaoke Unplugged - I wonder do they put out any CDGS from those acoustical concerts????? - Could be  new market  :thinkin:

Don't know if they made entire discs, I know Sound Choice did a couple of unplugged version ie Nirvana & Alanis

I usualy have problems like that at private gigs.  A way to over come that is I set up 4 speaker.  2 near the "stage" and 2 twords the "back" of the room.  It is all in speaker placement.  I probably spend at minium 20 minutes walking a room with music going and adjusting the speaker placement, Eqs, and volume levels.

And why is it the the OLD OLD, older than DIRT, people always plop themselves down right in front of a speaker?
