Can you give me some names of alcoholic drinks that would have been around in the 1880s
names of moonshine or ... well I dont know which is why I am askin I guess. I am trying to make the decor of the "Saloon" for the murder mystery on sat nite authentic and thought a sign at the bar with the names of drinks would be cool
hey even if you wanna make some up
that could be really fun too

JJ you are such a life saver xxxxxx I am so stressing here. I found this cool old looking sign thing online and thought I would just kinda create a list of booze n food to put in our saloon. then the creative juices stopped flowin

Whiskey, Rum and Wines all existed in the 1800's.  This is interesting tho.  Not sure of the names..  I'd imagine stuff like "Grog", "Moonshine", "Rum", "Whiskey", were names used.  I'm sure all different locations had different slangs for alcohol.  But it was heavily consumed until prohibition started heavily around that time. This is pretty interesting

Can't go wrong with Absinthe, the drink that gave man visions of the Gods.
You can get an American version imported from France call Absente.
Very popular among the artistic crowds during that period.

To all those who helped with names for my saloon sign a humble thank you. The business owner whos function it was came to the hotel today and asked to see me and the function co-ordinator, my heart sank thinking that he had a complaint. I dont get on with the functions co-ordinator and she waits in the wings for me to make a mistake. The Murder Mysteries, the karaoke machine we now have for hire and one or two other things were my initiative and she is just waiting for a chance to point the finger.

Anyway the guy just wanted to thank us both personally as he felt that so often we would hear only the complaints. His group had said it was the best staff function they had ever had and one lady who had been to 4 others at different places claimed it was the best run she had ever been to. I totally got my 2nd wind after that. So thank you all for helping me when my brain had turned to mush

Sarsaparilla was basically the same as a common day root beer.  It was the no-alcoholic drink of the day.

A popular potable in the 19th Century was absinthe, an anise flavored distillation.  I remember reading how it was thought at the time imbibing in this libation was tantamount to taking opium and considered a very "evil" spirit (no pun intended).  I looked up some info on it just now and apparently, it's a rather benign drink, no more dangerous than drinking any other alcholic beverage.  Don't know if it can be bought anywhere--I don't drink but someone curious enough might want to inquire next time they are at the liquor store.

thanks for the belated post but absinthe was mentioned by someone with far less pompous intentions. For the record absinthe is still available and still carries a strong warning on the label
