Etch is the newest linux availible this month The stable version will be availible this month and this set consists of 21 cds. Disc one is the basic OS and others contain all the packages with different progs and apps.. I downloaded etch disc one and finally got it installed...Linux is on the verge of supporting karaoke software and in fact I have already got winamp with all the plugins and media library working on etch..Once I get this cofigured the way I want goodbye windows!!!! I will give a short tour with some inital imptessions and a couple of screen shots which bt the way Tools-> Screenshot in the apps bar. This system is stable Ive been trying to install windows stuff and when you do something that doesnt work that window locks You can go ahead and use the system If you try the same peoject itr just says this prog already running Right click on the top pane and close it closes. Windows would give a 503 error andf a short vague description. Etch which I will shw in a screen shot as a matter of fact tells whats wrong whats missing and gives a solution. The first shot is the file browser.. On the left side is the main dir tree strucrures Cab is the main working partition and the rest is obvious If a usb hard drive is plugged in it wouls show here. When a hard drive is plugged in or cd in a few seconds a file browser window pops up to browse. It doesnt have to analyze every file on it or write to and screw up the index like windows does. On the right side is the sub directories.. Notice the + & - Mag A click mags the files whehter in icon or list. No more squinting when trying to rename a file.. Click on search and the search window is shown enter what then highlight the main on left or sub and enter. When you exit out of file browser then relaunch it goes back to the same way you exited with. pic Next is a shot of the term where one enters unix commands This shot shows where an error occured and it give an explanation what happened and what is needed. Notice the IE icon and winamp icon.. pic Here is a lin to download binary1.iso is disc 1 it is about 650MB!! link |

That's good news Ollie. I'm assuming that this is less of a resource hog than Windows. I can't wait to get this loaded on my Karoake computer. I would really like to get a full OS of Linux on a computer for my sister. She may have to use Windows until then. |

Thats an understatement....It doesnt have 40 dozen processes running just what you want.. When the desktop loads its ready It aint sitting there loading a bunch of background crap...I got it on a hard drive on the sytem comp with xp on another hard drive I know it isnt going to do anything to the other hard drive.. Thats more than I can say for windows. It is more complicated if you use the unix term features but for a average user it has enough now similar to windows for the net etc.. For a newbie at least they are not going to screw it up like windows...All the things thatb XP does that bugs the hell out of me this doesnt do it .....Its going to take this ol man awhile to learn most of the ins and outs (this applies to all) but it will be worth it. I love this system a bunch... |
