Some of us may be filling in for the regular staff out the local watering hole. I need to hear the suggestions again for fun stuff to keep our energy up for the night. Yes I said our energy, we are the ones whole will be dog tired since we aren't used to doing this. This will take our minds off of our aches and pains acquired and hopefully make for a fun and unusual show for the crowd. It's also a chance to show the bar owner a few tricks to make things go well and to sell more drinks. This night we will have more freedom to try new stuff. It will be a blast. |

The only one I can think of so far is kamikazee karaoke. The way we used to do it was each person write down a song number for a song that they actually sing, no song name and no singer name. We put the slips into a hat and and each sing draws one. When you have drawn, write your name on the slip and turn it in. This was the version we came up with about 14 years ago. Added: I just remembered, secret song. This is one we used to do a long time ago too. If no one gets it we will award a winner at random. When a person sings a preselected song they win the prize. Not a big cool prize, just something we can give away. |

I was trying to think of something different for you. One night it was slow, but I had about a dozen regular singers in the bar. We played bar trivia for who was to sing. I started the night off with it, so it would dictate the order of rotation for the night. I picked some fun questions about the bar and it's employees. Once you guessed a question right you were to sing. Now that person could not guess anymore because they already established their place in rotation. |

Your games don't even have to be music related. Stuff we've done in the past very successfully. HulaHoop contest - yes you'd be surprised how many actually want to do it & WHO! Money Pit - The bar ponies up $100 - one dollar bills. Everyone in the bar gets a raffle ticket. Draw 3 numbers. These 3 people come up to the dance floor (or open area of floor). Put garden gloves & blindfolds on them. Spread the dollars all over the floor. They get 1 minute to pick up what they can - what they have is theirs. Wind up toy races. Yes those little hopping wind up toys. Floor needs to be a hard type, not carpeted. Get 3 people to race their toy from the starting line to finish line. This one is hilarious watching big guys trying to maneuver these little things. Let's Make A Deal. Bar should help with prizes. Have a few boxes on a table with a prizes, 1 decent one & a couple not so. Call out obscure items - may need to start with something more common at first, if you do it awhile people will actually start bringing in boxes of stuff, wierdest thing I called before - shower head spiget & someone brought it to me. They get to choose a box then they get the option to trade that box for an envelope in my hand which could contain money, gift certificate or a gag gift. Radio control car races through the bar. Go through a certain course in a specified time. Walla Balla - this was a game you just needed to see in action. http://www.primetimeinteractive.com/bag_of_fun.htm Don't look like they are manufactured anymore, but it was a riot. Karaoke Bingo - Create your own cards with music, song titles, artists, bar staff, etc... Call 1 every 15 minutes. First one with a straight line bingo wins the cash pot - if no one wins by the end of the night, the pot would doube the next week. THis one is good as it keeps people in the bar all night - nonsingers alike. Karaoke auction - bar would have prizes. Every song sung, we would give a certain denomination of money - yes play money - the more you sang, the more you earned. Halfway through the night we would do an auction for a couple prizes or you could save up & try for bigger prizes later in the night. This one keeps the singers in the bar all night. Mystery Song - Pick 1 song in the book. Pot would start at $10. If anyone sang the song, they win the pot, if not the pot grows next week. Catch is if they believe that they have the correct song, they MUST finish the entire song - know it or not. It don't have to be good, just has to be done! Mystery song w/clues - Pick one song in the book. Pot would start at $10. If anyone sings the song they win the pot. We would give a clue every week pertaining to the song either directly or indirectly. Biggest pot we had was $250 with the house filling up each week. Wheel Of Fortune. We made a wheel with 20 wedges. Stuff like, free song turn, $ off drink, TINY slice for a cash pot, NADA, pick suicide for next singer, someone picks their next song, etc... Other games we did, darts, nerf basketball, golf game with a putting thing we found, some dumb rotating hat game, Name That Tune, identify the songs (would have a series of about 10 music clips all lined up after another in a wav file that I would play), music triva game, I even had an old disc of like 100 cartoon theme songs, we would play it in between songs & the first one that got it would get a prize (trinket prize, but hey, it was free to them LOL ) and a few others that I can't think of right off hand. And yes these were all done successfully (I know someone won't believe it), but like anything, they do get bored after a while, some of these we ran for almost a year, but most ran for a few months. |

Whatever happened to karaoke not being fun? If it isn't, why not? Pure karaoke music is still lots of fun here. No games or dance music. True fun karaoke. I'm confused as to how things got so out of control. |

Because I like to promote other things as well. It keeps things interesting & people love it. No out of control. Karaoke is great, but it isn't everything! |

for someone that used to sing his praises, that's an interesting sentence, Jesse. One other game I've done for the waitress... is have everyone pull out a dollar, and wave them around to a good tune, usually a good rocking, classic one from the sixties or seventies. (I worked in a biker bar, so to me that was a good way to go)... Anyway, everyone would wave them around and have the waitress/bartender during the time of the song run around the place trying to snatch the bills. You'd see some ornery folks gettin' naughty like in a strip bar, (I personally licked the bill and laid it on my bald head with some of it sticking up... got a scratch from her nails as a result of that! !) and just generally having fun!!! At the end of the song, everyone cheered the waitress... she was out of breath but grinning a smile that wouldn't go away for hours... it was a total win win for EVERYONE! All for a dollar! Each! |

No time for games. Everyone wants to sing all they can. It's that Non stop karaoke music, you know. Gets them everytime. LMAO :O |

Some of these ideas are great! Lonnie, move to Dallas, please! Bigdog, I think an all-karaoke show with all serious singers would scare away virgin singers (we call 'em cherry-okies). That isn't a problem? Or do you just ply them with liquid courage? We have so much karaoke in this area that additional entertainment is welcome. Good shows, too, with a lot of good singers. Yeah some crappy ones, too, but isn't this for fun anyhow? |

We may want to add that this show will be on Christmas Eve and we will be doing it for free (a donation to a great cause!!! Mary's Kids) Rich and I have done this a couple of years by ourselves to give the staff (waitresses and KJ) the night off. Working for tips, and then donating back to the cause...Plus the majority of the crowd is there because they have donated their time for this cause. It used to be a private party on Christmas Eve every year but not anymore. The owner didn't want to turn people away on Christmas Eve by not being open....But then I don't think anyone was ever turned away anyways.... |

Serious karaoke singers never have fun. If anyone even smiles they are banned for life. :O  If you want to have fun try finding a good hack. |

Good heavens, Bigdog, you must run the most BORING show in all karaoke-dom! Come to Texas for Christmas Eve and see how an ENTERTAINER runs a show. We are going to have fun and, like Sharon says, it is for a good cause. The bar donates food, clothing and toys to local families and they do a car caravan to deliver everything on Christmas Eve. They have raffles and sell stuff to raise money. For $25 or so, you can "buy" a ceiling tile and get your name or a saying stencilled on it. $5 annually to renew. All this money goes to Mary's Kids, as well. Ooh, Sharon, you think we could get a local hotel to donate a weekend getaway? We could have a raffle on Christmas Eve to get the ball rolling for next year's Mary's Kids! |

I was beginning to think it was necessary because someone keeps coming in to hijack the thread. My idea was to set this show apart from the non-stop karaoke show they usually do. It's something I learned in theater so I don't expect a mutt to get it. |

Anyway, BigDog is not an entertainer, he is only a karaoke host - nothing more, he's made that perfectly clear. An entertainer has an open mind & can do other things as well. |

I think the hotel raffle on Christmas Eve is a terrific idea. Perhaps we can get them to donate two nights and do a give away too for all the people that put in so much hard work for the kids this year. It will be fun...4 entertainers all night...This is going to be a seriously entertaining show!!! |
