What do you do when you have a singer who sings into the mic, but can not be heard because no sound is coming out of their mouth. Their lips are moving, but you wouldn't be able to hear them if you were standing next to them.

I have a new regular who puts songs in all night, but it is a waste of time because he can not be heard. It isn't my system !

He also is an undesirable. I don't think he bathes and always appears to be drunk and on something. He doesn't do anything to merrit kicking him out of the bar, but people don't like him around. I did ban him from singing one night because he told some guy to suck his co__ over the mic. He imediately appoligized to me several times. To his defense a guy in the audience was making fun of him.

Is there anything I can do? I cringe everytime he puts a slip in.

Get a tub of water near the monitor. Have him step into it. When he grabs the mic all of your problems will go away. This brings new problems though. This can only be done on Halloween. LMAO

He might be freezing up in a way that you can't tell. Try telling him to take a deep breath when he sings. It might help.

Okay you're no help  LMAO

I have thought of telling him a couple different things. One is to tell him he needs to
try to be louder because no one can hear him and I can't have him sing if all that people hear is the music. Then if he can't get louder limit him to one song, no song or he has to sing with someone.

2 - tell him right out he can't sing at all because no one can hear him. I would feel bad doing this even if he is gross.

Please I need some feedback.

You have two choices.

1. Just keep doing what you are doing.

2. Turn down the music to match his volume.

Is he having fun?

Is he spending money?

Is he doing anything to deserve to be ejected?

Hi BD

I do turn down the music so low that the crowd is louder than the music being played. I don't think you could hear him if I turned the music off, seriously.

He does buy beer while he is there. How much I don't know.

Does he potentially scare away costumers who would spend money - yes. He bothers others who are in the bar by just being him. Unfortunately I don't think if he couldn't sing he'd go away.

He is having fun, but he takes up space for people who could be singing and heard.

My regulars enjoy listening to people sing not lip sink air.

Yes I could continue just letting him do his thing with out saying anything, but what I failed to mention is this isn't just bothering me, the costumers are complaining too.

You have the right to refuse service to anyone using your equipment.  You can't do anything else about him.  The bar would need to deal with him in any other manner & if he scaring paying clients away 'just by being him' then the bar should open up their eyes & see if his vs the money that he drives away is worth it!!!!!

Thanks Lon for responding - I feel better about saying something to him because I
know the owner won't kick him out. Unfortunately I have a bar owner who isn't to bright when it comes to that sort of stuff.

What if you can be his back up vocals, so he'll want to sing louder, or maybe he'll get the notion that he's bombing.  or if there are guiding vocal tracks to his songs, use those too.

The guiding vocals idea is a great idea, but I don't have them  :bawling:

I've thought of singing with him, but all you would hear is me. I don't want people to think I'm show boating over him.

The bar owner will always back the guy just because he spent a dollar.

The Chipmonk couldn't get a date, so somehow it became my problem.

A regular started a fight at the other end of the bar 2 weeks ago and it became my problem.    I told the bartender to get rid of him.   Now he wants to kick my A**.

This is at the same bar.    Now I will tell the bar owner that I have reached my 2 A**hole limit.   Anything else that happens toward me, that she should have prevented, I'm gone.   No more warnings.    If she can stand to lose over $50,000 a year, good for her.    Nobody will bring in the crowd I have.     She will have her choice of all the hacks in the neighborhood.

I will find another gig.   She will not find anyone to make her $50,000.   It will hurt her a lot more than it will hurt me.

The price you pay for being STUPID.

He's not in there starting trouble, and he spends money.  So what if he stinks both literally and figuratively?  If his appearance and hygene fail to meet the standards of the venue, then THEY should be the ones talking to him, not you.  As for his singing, big deal if no one can hear him.  I'm sure you are a good enough KJ that you customers will know it's him and not you that is the problem.  Let him have his 3 minutes and move on!  It could be worse, he could smell bad and be a screamer!

Well, I've got one of those "just got to sing, but scared someone will hear me singers" too. I have started singing with her, which I notice gets her to sing louder, and now I just turn my mic off and sing next to her, which helps her to sing louder, but without me overpowering her on the system. I've also gotten to where after she sings I'll say" folks, she got a great voice, I just wish she'd let you hear her".  She is starting to sing louder, but only if she can't hear herself! Go figure!

As far as your particular singer....If he is very drunk, and annoying you and everyone else, but you are not wanting to tell him not to sing, maybe just let him sing one song every 2 rotations (he may not notice, or maybe he'll get the hint). For everyone who's going to gripe about that comment: yes, I believe in fair rotations, but some situations require a little tweeking. :D  Though I do like your idea of telling him to get louder, then limiting him if he doesn't.

Your bar only makes $50,000 a year off of karaoke?  Is that before or after she pays you?  52 weeks in a year breaks down to about $961 per week, so that just a 1 night figure I gather.  Small club or really cheap drinks.

Hmmm..  The situation is usually the role of the "oh my gosh how freaking terrible can someone be" singer.   There was a girl that used to make everyones ears turn inside out.  Hygeine and teeth were an issue (teeth in pocket).  But, you know, she loves karaoke (even though she sounds like a racoon getting beat with a shovel).  Every night, I'd get patrons asking me "Can't you just lose her slip?"  "Why do you keep letting her sing?"  Why?  Because I know that she  looks forward to singing karaoke and who am I to take that away from her?

I think all you can do is let the guy play lip sync with your microphone, shrug your shoulders behind him and dose up a little encouragement.  But for the sake of your next singer, I recommend an alcohol wipe for the mic, or have a certain mic set aside for him when he sings.

If he continues just to annoy, stammer, or not take it seriously...  Then keep moving him down the rotation...

Just a couple of nickels worth...

How bout the Pine Tree Window Hangy-thingy that you buy for the car?  Then he would smell like a drunk cab-driver.   LOL

That's just a round figure.   I actually do her two nights.   I know the figures for one of them, but the other is a military secret.

Drinks aren't that expensive and the place isn't real big.   If it holds 60 legally, I'll be surprised.

Babs...what happened to you getting a compressor for your mic channels? If the guy is singing at all, the compressor should help in correcting the gain structure so you can hear him at the same volume as the mix (in theory).

I remember you were asking about compressors in the tech forum a few months ago. Did you not go through with it? Do you have it dialed in correctly? Does this guy literally just lip sync?

The good thing about multiplex system is that if a singer lip sync/no audible vox, then just press the stereo button; he will sound good. In our here the singer will sound like the original artist. LOL

If this guys hygiene is not up to par - its not up to the kJ to determine that!!
If he sings and no one can hear him --That might be a Godsend

If he is bothering other patrons mention to the manager and let THEM make the decision to band him or not. - Other wise JUST SKIP HIM IN THE ROTATION a few times so he is only singing once a night   LOL
