I just wondered, since I ran across this forum and I don't sing karaoke and I don't understand...... Do you guys ever sing live? (I mean with a band or instruments). I just wondered. Sometimes I go to jam nights and what is missing? Singers. Now, I know its daunting I know since a thing like that might seem.... cliquey, but its not really. Everyone doesn't know anyone! So what it? Never thought about it? Its "totaly different"? I was going to a new soul jam night off Oxford st, London http://www.myspace.com/soulloungeuk . I don't know what its like, ............... but I bet there aren't enough singers! |

In karaoke you have a choice of 5K to 7000 songs to pick. A live band can handle 200 or at most 500 songs. I pick karaoke anytime. If I want to sing with a band I need to rehearsed with them first. |

Coming from someone that does both karaoke & has sang in bands, karaoke CAN be harder at times as if you forget a line - yeah even though it's on the screen - we've all had it happen, the music keeps going on re4gardless of the mess up, in a live situation - provided the band is good, they can catch the mistake & adjust the song to make it work. It IS totally different. |

When the energy and magic is present, there is no difference. This takes a combination of good music a good mix a good atmosphere a good crowd and on and on...With a band you njeed to know the words but also need the practice of singing the song to understand the "rythmn" of when to start and end each passage and tempo.. This is sometimes harder with a band that cant keep the same beat or tempo for the whole song.. And believe you me there are drummers that cant... Also with a band one can glance at a music sheet for a reminder of the words.. The mutual energy between the lead singer and all the band members in a good set is hard to beat and do sometimes with karaoke... But again when everything is there there is no difference... |

I sang with live bands for 38 years. Until a couple of years ago I had never done karaoke. Now I'm in an act with a partner. He plays bass, I play guitar, we both sing and our "band" is CDGs. It took me a long time to get used to doing this. I don't know how it is for most people but for me a part of the energy of singing with the band comes from the other musicians. The other thing is that I can feel the drums through the floor—not just hear them. My partner and I play off each other so there is some of the energy you get with a band but hearing the drums through speakers still makes it different. I do like the fact that "everyone" shows up for every gig. Musicians aren't generally known for being responsible. At the jams I've attended around here there doesn't seem to be a shortage of singers. Although I've noticed that for the most part the singers are the musicians who are playing. I don't often see someone who just sings. I don't think that's intentional. I can see that someone who doesn't play would be reluctant to get up and sing with the musicians who are jamming. In my experience, though, the musicians who go to jam are pretty generous so I don't think anyone would mind. In this area the jams tend to be either jazz or blues. So a lot of the music is "standard". For a singer to fit in it would pretty much be necessary to know the stuff that the musicians are playing. You don't find too many groups of musicians who each know every song that's ever been written. Larry |

We have a few places around here that do live band karaoke. The band has about 100 songs they can play and you get up on the stage to sing with them. I was also in a band for two years and I think karaoke is a snap compared to singing with a live band. Sure, good musicians can cover up small mistakes but the coordination you have to have to sing with a band is much more difficult. I can walk into any karaoke bar in the country and rattle off a song I haven't heard in 10 years and absolutely nail it, but I certainly can't automatically jump on on stage with a band and it always work. Believe me, I actually weazel my way on stage all the time, and yes, 90% of the time I don't miss a beat, but then there are a few subtle disasters, mostly when the musicians change aspects of the song, like skip repetitive verses or choruses, shorten interludes or solos, play in different rhythms or keys, etc... In fact, the last time I got up on stage was last weekend. It was one of those guitar players that used MIDI as his backing track, which I think is silly most of the time. Anyway, I got up there and started playing and singing "Wonderful Tonight" for my GF's birthday. This guy apparently thought that he could just turn on the backing track and I would adjust to it, but the backing track was in a different key and time than I was used to and it tripped me up. I adjusted to the timing, but played the rest of the song in a different key than the backing track. Now the funny part is that no one else seemed to notice, but it drove me crazy!! Either way, I think any good band singer will always make a good karaoke singer, but NOT all good karaoke singers can sing in a band...it takes more knowledge of music theory and intricacies or just pure musical talent than karaoke does IMO!! |

I agree with you Chris-it's more difficult to sing with a band because they may have their own arrangement of a song or they play it in a different key than the original. It's always a bit of a crap shoot to get up and sing with a band. They may not know the songs you know and vice versa. And the key of the song is often a major issue. Transposing to a different key isn't difficult if you're playing 12-bar blues. But if you're doing a song that's got a lot of chords and chord changes, transposition on the fly can be an insurmountable challenge. It's for that reason that we don't often let people come up and sing with us nor do I usually get up and sing with anybody else. We spend a lot of time practicing so that we can go out and put on the best show our capabilities will allow. It just seems dumb to have someone you've never met come up and sing. First it disrupts the show because you have to go through the "do you know this song . . . no, well do you know that song?" thing and then the result is often not very good. Friday night the band I went to see asked me to come up and play a few songs. I've known these guys for about 10 years and I've played a few gigs with them so I didn't feel bad about doing it. We were already familiar with each other and I had a good idea of what songs they knew. I might not have done that with a different band. And I would NEVER ask a band if I could sit in with them. That puts them in a very uncomfortable position and I believe it's unfair to ask them to do something they are really not prepared to do. Larry |

The closest thing I would compare it to would be an "open stage" night. Where anybody can do just about anything. Musicians and singers alike. Just jamming together. It's not meant to sound perfect. Just the fun of it. |

Singers use to hearing filler music between songs wouldn't know what to do. The ones that have to wait to be called to the stage would be right at home. |
