I know of a girl that has changed over to computer karaoke.    She also has regular music on the laptop.    So she does a mix, if you will of both.     The problem starts when she queues up a list of singers and walks away to sit at the bar.     You can set the computer to start the songs automatically.    This is what she does.     Never changes the mix volumes on the song or the singer.   So whatever it sounds like is what they get.   The bar owner isn't real happy about it.   I guess the singers are complaining.  I know I would.   She may be losing her job soon.

I heard about a DJ that does pretty much the same thing.   He uses discs but the owner has watched him put in a disc that plays 6 songs in a row and walks away to shoot pool.   The DJ wants a raise and the owner says he watches what he does and he isn't working very hard for the pay he gets now.

Had a little competition at one of my jobs.    The bar owner had another KJ come in on a Thursday night.   I think they begged for it.    This went on for while every Thursday, at least 3 months.   Normally I would have told the bar owner that they would have to pick me or them.   I don't want someone confusing what I do, with what they do.    I need to pay off my ex so I didn't want to cut off my nose to spite my face.    I left it go.     Well the Thursday crowd never really materialized so they got rid of them.     It turns out that they are filling in a couple of Fridays because some bands cancelled.      They play dance music and KJ.     Here is the best part.   They were doing the Thursdays for FREE.    3 MONTHS FREE.    Can't get their own job so they want to do mine for FREE.    Did somebody say the word "hack?"    They are the ones that use $50 cordless microphones.     Think about this, that price is for the mike and the receiver.    So they use a $20 mike. LMAO

I should have stuck to my guns and told the owner them or me.

The lesson from the first two stories.

Look busy all the time (especially if you want to ask for a raise) the bar owners are watching and people are complaining.    "Customer service" is the key word.    Not laziness.

Well obviously they are providing a more cost-effective product than you are. From the bar owner's prospective, having 10 people in the bar but paying the KJ $0 is far preferable to paying you $125 to bring in 25 people. All day, every day, can't compete with free!!!

Yeah, that would be a problem. She sounds like a barfly/socialite who just happens to own a karaoke set up.

~String her up.~

Which would be nice for the locals, then maybe they'd get a real KJ.

THAT..... is de-scusting. Not as bad as I thought it was gonna be..... I figured you were gonna say kitty tried to EAT it.  :puke:

Good KJs don't have time to be sitting at the bar.   Good KJs are busy mixing every singer so they sound their best.      It's all part of your reputation.

I had sort of the same thing happen with a band. I lost one Saturday night to a band that offered to come in and play for free. The guys were horrible didn't even have a singer. They got drunk and annoyed the few people who were there. The bar ended up losing money because hardly anyone came to see them.

You can't be a band or a karaoke host and get stupid drunk and not take your job seriously. Even if you work for free you still have to have a crowd there to make the bar money.

Exactly.   The ones that want to succeed will take it seriously.  They won't act like jerks, they won't get drunk and they won't get people mad at them over stupid stuff.

There are two sides to every story. From what I know about this one, these thursday night people (who i've met and seem quite nice) wanted to get start doing kj/dj. i believe they are regulars at the bar and are friends or least friendly with the owners. they ask her if they could come and do karaoke on a night when no entertainment scheduled. i think the thought was that they could work on their show while providing the bar with something that could potentially draw a crowd at no cost to the bar. they did come in with pretty cheap gear and of course their show was not polished, but where is the harm?
it's pretty silly to think that bd would worry that people would confuse their show with his. it would be as silly as a country band that plays there reguarlly on the weekends having a showdown with the owners over some local kids just starting up doing some country at the bar on a thursday night because people would somehow confuse the two bands. bd has already said he's got kicked out of this place once, and if threatened, im sure the owner would have no trouble finding a replacement. so bd is all talk on this one. maybe because he feels if they want karaoke on thursday, he should do it. but if the bar owner wanted to have karaoke on saturdays, i pretty much doubt that bd is going to give up his regular saturday night show at another bar, and there would be no thought of any kind of showdown with the owners. bd is good at what he does, but why all this bashing lately of everyone else? it seems that bd = god, other kjs = hacks, club owners = idiots in bds mind.

bye pghpat

The only thing I would worry about if another KJ, who was subpar, worked the same bar I did is if people would stop coming on the nights I was there worrying they would get the rotten karaoke host.

I had one of my regulars ask the bar owner if he could bring his system in and KJ on one of my off nights for free. This was a while back. The bar owner told him  he didn't care if Babs didn't mind. He told the bar owner he already asked me and I said yes - not true. His system really isn't a system at all. It is a home system. An all in one speaker, amp player with one mic. He had 900 songs all copied CDGs from a friend. When I found out I just laughed. It wasn't worth stopping it from happening. well he came in and it was a joke. The equipment didn't work half the night and he thought the bar owner would supply his beer for free and got mad when he wouldn't. all said, He ended up making me look good.

It was really nice to know that the bar owner wouldn't let another karaoke host come in on my off night even for free without my permission, but he did learn he better ask me first because obviously people lie.

You are right Babs.   I do not want my reputation confused with some hack.   If people come on their night and they think it sucks.   They will tell their friends I was at S0 & Sos and the karaoke sucked.    Not knowing maybe that there are two different KJs.    I would rather give the bar owner the ultimatum.   Pick one or the other, but I have a reputation to maintain.    Your reputaion will also be effected.        They will not help either one.

It would be the same if all the bands were judged by one bad one.    Or all Doctors, or mechanics, etc.    If there is only one KJ playing then there can be no confusion.   If I suck then I'll take my medicine.    But I do not need to suck because someone else does.
