Just wanted to gloat a bit about a new gig I picked up last night. There was a bar owner in the crowd that was playing in a pool league against our bar. The conversation went something like this (pay attention Big Dog!!):

Quote:
Bar Owner: Would you be interested in picking up another karaoke night?

Me: Possibly, what night?

Bar Owner: Right now we have a guy doing it Thursday, Friday, and Saturday....have you ever heard of Wild Sam's Karaoke?

Me: Can't say I've heard of him.

Bar Owner: We are looking to replace him. We have a younger crowd and he doesn't play any good dance music like you do...we need tto get the girls movin!

Me: I would definately be interested in Thursdays

Bar Owner: That works, we can let you do the Thursdays and keep him on for the weekends, I'll be in touch

So, I got a new gig and Wild Sam is going to be out of some $$ and I owe it all to my DJ-aoke skills!!! Karaoke purists beware!!

This message should be taken with a grain of salt.   Remember you're talking to a bar owner.    Not the brightest burning bulbs.    He still doesn't understand the meaning of a karaoke night.   If it was supposed to be a dance night, then he should have hired a DJ, not a KJ in the first place.    The girls could have danced and the singers wouldn't have been wasting their time in a DJ-o-ke bar.

Congrats on the gig.  :worship:    The proof will be in keeping the karaoke singers happy as much as the nonsingers.   The singers may jump over to the weekend.   Keep us informed on the outcome. :D

I think a good combination of karaoke, dancing, strippers, poker, bingo, and as much goth all together is the best of all worlds. How can you miss when it all blends so well together?

Congratulations for being open minded enough not to throw a gig away.

As has been said many times before , until you actual know the crowd at the new gig and what they expect and what they want  you will have to be flexiable in your show format.   We all love Karaoke (Thats why we are here)  But business is business and hosting 2 shows that offer a MIX is better than hosting NOTHING.

There is definately a need for the KJ who won't or can't do anything but back to back karaoke.  People who want to do nothing but SING love this !!!!  -
Some younger crowds want to do it all, They want to sing karaoke , they want to dance to some HIP HOP --which isn't sung much at karaoke. They want to listen to some CHART BREAKING songs again which isn't sung much at Karaoke .
And when DRUNK ..THEY WANT TO SING ALL NIGHT LONG !!!!

I already work Wednesdays and Saturday nights at a pretty big bar and have a big crowd that I have a good time with. I've also been there for almost 2 years.

This guy's bar is going to be a smaller place, though it does draw a pretty good crowd for its size.

I'll probably stick to Wed and Sat at my old place and Thurs at the new place. Wild Sam can keep his other days!!

Hehehhehe, yes big *Congrats* go out to you on your new gig.  Dancin' girls are a big hit, period.  (Standard Karaoke Bars/Places are a different animal....general bars tend to work better with a mixed gig, as we have argued here extensively!!!)  MrD

I had a weird phone call today.   The male on the line asked if I had a lot of HIP HOP karaoke music.  The he got more specific asking if I had a lot of M&M and other rap junk.   And how much I charged.    I told him I didn't have a lot of the stuff.   I didn't get into the specifics of why I don't have a lot of that junk.   Never told him my price and we hung up.   He sounded young (MID 20s) and white.    I don't know if it was legit or not.  Could have been someone trying to rattle my cage.    If it was legit, I wouldn't have gotten the job anyway.   But then again, it's not up my alley.

That was me Dog. I'm 41 but I can play much younger on the phone. I wanted to give you a hard time but you didn't seem unnerved by it at all. No fun for me. LMAO

I think that is the closest I am going to get to a concession from Big Dog!! I'll take what I can get. Big Dog, I don't know if you are in FL, but if you are anywhere close to Tampa/St. Petersburg, give that guy my #, I've got what he wants!!

I really don't care if I ever get a wedding, party, anniversary or whatever kind of thing where I have to split the DJ/KJing.   I really hate it.     I really hate HIP HOP & that kind of stuff, so that is not a market I would ever consider entertaining.   I like to limit my exposure to crowds that have a high opportunity to get crazy.    I don't get paid enough to deal with that crap.     So I stay away from it.    Remember the kind of music you play determines the type of crowd.    I cater to a milder crowd.   If it turned out to be a legit gig, I probably wouldn't have liked it.    The money doesn't matter that much.   It's not a concession, it's my choice.    I am picky about my safety and the type of places I play.   I won't starve without that job or any other.      I do this for fun, the money is a bonus.

On a somewhat related subject.

Let's talk about ethics.

I had a guy approach me last might to play over for a half hour for $30.   He's the same guy that gave me $50 to play over 2 weeks ago.   Anyway his friend has a bar.   The owner really wants me to play at his bar.    He tried to offer me more money than I usually charge, to quit a steady gig to do his bar.

I make money from my reputation.   Part of my reputation relies on my word.    My verble contract/commitment.    If I would sell out  my current bar to take more money, is not part of my plan.   I feel that my reputation for honesty, integrity and dependability will be harmed.     I do not want to have people say that I am not a credible person.    I would not do it to him, so why should he expect me to do it for him?     I would consider it if the first bar was not paying full money like they should be.     Or if the crowd situation was getting uncontrollable because the bar owner didn't give a rip.      I would never do it on principle for the money.   My reputation makes me money.   My reputation could cost me money.

Hey BD - you may want to start another post topic for this.
I don't think Topher would mind a hijack at this point (Topher I hope you don't mind me saying that), but people
won't know to look here for what you've written.

Congrats TopherM I am happy very for you but....I really dont understand why everyone asks Bigdog to drop things hes posted in the forum, that he goes overboard with his rants but then people get him started again with threads like these that "gloat" about what they think is the "right" way to run a show.

I have been reading alot of those threads & posts but not posting alot about them, & I dunno I just think the whole forum is going overboard with their ranting about his ranting.

I have the " whatever works for you " opinion about all of these threads. There is no right or wrong just whatever is working in your business to make it successful is the way ya run a show.

This IS NOT personal Topher this just has been bugging me latley. Sorry if I offended you or anyone else just wanted to voice my opinion.

Probably because the Dawg is always claiming his way is the right way...maybe not in so many words, but very strong indication that if things aren't done the way he does it, that karaoke will die.  Well if it is to die, then that's the breaks, but he starts it all off by claiming he's the best & then can never provide any info on where/when to see him in action.

GOD has never been seen in any church, ever.    So why do millions of people go there week after week to talk to him?     He never advertised his gigs.       Nobody knows where he is, for sure.

Why does it bother everyone that I don't broadcast my whereabouts.    Doesn't mean I don't exist.  Doesn't mean I have no experience.  Doesn't mean anything.  You'll just have to take it on faith.    John Lennon said it best.

Beatles, :worship:

God, :worship:  :worship:

Bigdog. :worship:  :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

Everybody else.   LMAO    Did I say that?   :O

it bothers us because you can't back up what you say. Once you show us something substantive, I bet the accusations will cease, and the tolerance for your B.S. will increase!

actually, most I've met ARE. That's why sites such as this one that freely share information thrive, because, overall, most are trying to raise the bar for karaoke.
