They swapped everything out for me, and I got to try it out today! I tried the new sm58 very nice! I was using a senheiser 815s I believe, anyways I noticed on the new amp there are 4 extra knobs that are designed for compression? I am unfamiliar with this. Could anyone explain if there is a benefit to this knob? Thanks a ton!

I have that same mixing amp in an older model that I use as a backup, and the compression knobs must be new!!

Basically, what compression does is it will level out the volume and power spikes of your mic sound. So a whisper will sound the same audibly as a yell and the regular singing. On most compressors, there are 3-7 individual effects settings, so I would assume that for this single knob they have basically leveled out all of the basic compression settings and turning the knob increases all compression settings equally behind the scenes.

To get it at an acceptable level, first set everything in your mix up up like you normally would with the compression knob all the way down to 0, just like you would when dialing in any effect (compression is really just a series of layered effects). Then sing over the music at progressively very low to medium to higher volumes then back down again while SLOWLY turning up the knob (the MIC button has to be toggled for that channel for the compression to be on). The second you think that all of the various volumes of signing sound relatively the same in the overall mix, that is your compression setting and you should never have to touch it again for that mic for that room.

Good stuff, I did notice that it did things like that. Like when I was singing Patience by GnR the part that is whispered really came out when the knob was up.

This amp is the emx 512sc yamaha. The difference is very noticeable!
