For some reason now when I plug a usb hard drive into a laptop XP Compaq Presario 5105 There is a blue screen of death for a second (not long enough to read ) then reboots.. Sometimes the hard drive is there on reboot but not the icon on the right end of the start bar....I did a disc scan on the 10 gig partition not on the big partition yet.... Ive never seen this before...Suggestions?...

what OS are you using?
USB drives are notoriously fickle when it comes to ME and earlier versions that you have to load drivers.
If you have all your windows updates, it may be as simple as deleting your old USB drivers, and letting them reinstall when you plug it in. I sometimes do this if I've had way too many USB devices plugged up from time to time. The windows will try to install a driver, and a generic USB one that comes with the windows updates has never failed me yet! BUT some usb enclosures come with their own drivers, and you may have to load them instead!
If you get another blue screen, try like he!! to look at the first two letters of your code it flashes up. Usually a 0x is indicative of a software problem (where X is a number!). Anything else could be a hardware or driver problem.
Also, check your device manager and see if you have any yellow "?" in suspect places.

It sounds like it may be hardware related. Possibly a short? Are you using any other USB peripherals other than your HD? Have you tried other ports? All ports show the same problem? If you plug in a USB hub, does it reboot? If you plug in the HD before you turn on the machine, does the system boot up ok? The answers to these questions may narrow it down a bit.

All other usb devices work'
Tried another port...
Booting up with the drive attached it sees it and the drive works normally...
This hard drive has a 10gig partition that had xp OS on it.. Yesterday I was running out of disc space and I deleted the windows folder.... When I backup the other files I will reformat the 10gig partiion .....???

I think the problem is it's seeing the windows partition...
I don't use any USB drives for anything other than storage...

Update Matt I disabled the auto restart to read the error...
With this tech info
****STOP 0x0000008E (0C00000005, 0XF7A2100 oX000000)
CFSDrv.sys ADDRESS F79AE00 base at F79AE00, DATESTAMP 42b1382d
A few weeks ago I installed Protect Folder Plus and cant remember the flippin password.to uninstall but the CFSDrv.sys is theirs...It was working until yesterday.
I emailed them to see what they say.. It works on other computers but any hard drive usb to this crashes And none were password protected.... A guy on Amazing techs forum said usually a stop 8E error has to do with memory error..
When I get it Ill let you know so all can stay away from this prob......

Eban I have something similar with this new puter...every time I plug in or unplug headphones into the headphone socket on the front of my tower my computer shuts down. its bloody annoying. The tech has to have wired it wrong

yes! The front ports for the cases hook into the same 9 plugs for speaker, mic, ground, etc... If you can find an online diagram of your specific motherboard, I'd trace the tiny plugs that are hooked up on it. It's annoying as heck, but sometimes you gotta do it!

Hi everybody,
I'm having the same problem with my HDD and the Password protect Plus program.
CFSDrv.sys ADDRESS F79AE00 base at F79AE00, DATESTAMP 42b1382d
But, I can't uninstall the program. As soon as the uninstall process starts, the nice bluescreen comes up and thats it.
I stopped the CFSSvc.exe before, but no help.
HOW can I uninstal it?
Thanks
Tom

do you have the program running?
I'd stop everything I possibly could, including antivirus and spyware programs. Make certain in your task manager you have NOTHING running other than the basics.
Then try to uninstall it.

Yea thats a good idea Matt Also I think I did go into run-> msconfig Startup tab and uncheck protect plus or whwtever they called it....
Out of curiousity are you trying to hook up the drive to a different computer that the protect plus is installed on Or the same? See if it will work with another computer I want to know if it tagged the drive...
