Just about to hit the shower to get ready for work and hear this on the news...
In NZ (my country) women on average earn a staggering $400 less per week than men. Not a lot of incentive to look and perform my best
Anyway cheers folks best get my tush outta the chair and head to the coalface

I hate to say it, but I think it is partially our fault we make less.
I did say partially.
When I used to hire woman on the average were willing to work for less.
I hate to say it, but I'm not going to hire someone for more if they will work for less.
Men come in demanding more money. Now I would be curious if woman on a whole were being hired more and more compared to their male counter parts.

I still think most woman are less ruthless and more trust worthy when it comes to working, but woman will take more sick days for children than men. Just my observation. :D

Sweetcheeks, show me a woman who spent 20 years away from home on nuclear submarines, who managed to get her engineering degree while at sea, who then started over after military service and washed dishes and whatever it took to climb back to the top of the salary ladder like I did this last few years.....You show me her and I will gladly fight for her to make the same money I make......I'm knocking down a total of 85K/yr, but by God I earned it the hard way and it wasn't because I got a kickstand to lean on.

My wife makes about 16K and complains that I sit on my butt and make 300/day...I tell her I'll pay for her to go get a degree.....she refuses, therefore her complaints are simply noise to me and I continue to sit on my butt and suck it up.

ok got enuff time to type something quickly on my way out the door..Babs you are entirely correct and I think largely its because we dont value ourselves enough.
For me when I was interviewed for this job I have now I wasnt qualified and all I wanted was  a chance to prove myself...now 12 months down the track I feel I have. I have no idea how to ask for more money because at the back of my mind I am still the person who would have done the job for nothing just to do something that gave me satisfaction. How do I get an even balance?
I love my job and yeah I would do it for nothing cos its varied and creative and lots of fun.
How do I get the best of both worlds?

I used to tell the boss I needed an evaluation. Then after that I would ask for a raise or start looking for new work. You have to get a raise every year just to keep up with the cost of living.

Post subject:  Re: grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Chuck that is very smart. I think that is a great way to approach it. Especially the part about the price of living. Another way to approach it is ask your boss if he is unsatisfied with your work. When he looks all puzzled and tells you he is happy with your work. You ask him why after a year he hasn't given you a raise. That you thought you'd done something wrong. a little reverse psychology.  :D It worked on me once. I wouldn't give someone a raise unless they ask for it and deserve it. An unhappy employee will look for work somewhere else. If I couldn't give a good reason not to give them a raise and I really do want them working for me they I better at least give it thought. If they say that can't do it now - ask when.
Remember the worst thing that could happen is they say no.

Gosh keith I wasn't looking for a p!ssing contest. I'm sure you deserve all you have achieved.

There are many woman  and men who have paid there dues and have become successful. I do not think that is a gender thing.

We were talking about men and woman with the same experience getting paid differently.

Cute Johnny.

I have not had a day job in some time. I recommend googling to find out how people do it these days. I also recommend keeping the resume up to date. It helps define your capacity at work and you worth to the company. Just updating it will remind you what your strong points are. Strong points are the leverage to getting a raise.

Don't take me wrong Babs.

All people, men and women, need to learn to be aggressive out there in that big world.

They need to load their guns with education and experience bullets and start shooting them......If you are fully loaded with good ammo and discover yourself standing in front of the boss begging for a raise, then its time to shoot a few well aimed bullets up his butt....Like a man would.

Ain't nobody gonna give you nothin.....Hitch up yer pants and wad up yer fists and square off with them if you expect them to respect you.

I'm cheering for you.

I agree with approaching it just this way. It's pretty much what it takes.

EXACTLY!

Keith you can't bring up the subject of Nucs, because women were NOT ALLOWED to SERVE on them 20 years ago. I don't think there are any on them now, and if there are, it's in the RECENT history.

If you're going to have a debate on something like this, at least come in well armed with useable knowledge, not your own personal history that no woman could match due to regs that just don't make it possible. It's only been RECENTLY that women served in combat. It's only been RECENTLY that women in the military are even CASUALLY thought to be the equivalent of men. The working guys think so, but those pesky congressmen and senators and admirals and generals don't think so. The same as they don't agree about other types of sexual equals.
Jeez, you wanna pull the equality plug, why not talk about RACIAL equality! That's STILL a crock in the service... it's better than the gender issue, but not by much!

Actually I have submitted self evaluations (2) in the year I have been working there. I am stringently fair and I know that I am underperforming in one area. That is due in part to the fact that cold calling leaves me...well...cold!
but that is just part of my job description (going out and securing conferences) as for the rest, because of my promotions and advertising experience we are well ahead of target for the upcoming Christmas season
The other reason I under perform in the "corporate sales" part of my job is due to the hours of research I put in on things like loyalty card programs. We are several months into getting one off the ground. When it is launched it will be a full time job just administering it as it will be a town-wide scheme.
Yeah maybe I do need to go see my boss and say hey the box of chocolates for my anniversary was nice but wheres the cash  :dancin:

Exactly.

It's good to know where your short comings are. They may come up when discussing a raise. Make a plan on how to improve on these if they do.

Bigdog, is that an actual pic of you to the left?  I saw the movie Benji many years ago. You look sort of like Benji.   :need hug:
