Hi there,

I just got a Sanyo DVD-DX506 from Costco. It has karaoke function with CD, DVD+R, DVD-R CD-G, CD-DA, MP3 (Region 1). I hooked it up to my suround sound system. The DVD player (audio and Video) works fine when I select the proper source on my amplifier.

The problem I have is with the microphone sound. I get sound out of it but only very faint sound even when the amplifier volume is set to max. The microphone has no volume control on it. The Sanyo unit has a Level Knob and a Echo knob. I put the Level Knob to the max and still only very faint sound. I know the problem is not the mic because it works fine on a friends setup. Here's a breakdown of what I've done so far :

- Exchanged the unit at Costco (same problem)
- Hooked the unit directly to my TV (same problem)
- Hooked it back to my Sound System amplifier. (same problem)
- Hooked the unit up at a friends house. (same problem)
- Changed the sound setting in the setup menu of the unit (same problem)

One last thing : I haven't tried with a karaoke DVD or CD (I haven't gotten the ones I ordered on eBay yet). Is it possible that this is the problem. Could it be that the karaoke fuction will only work with a karaoke DVD on a unit like this?

Any help would be apreciated...Thanks

Here is a URL for more info on the unit :

Sometimes the mikes only work when you are switched to the karaoke setting.   That is the only time the key change function works too.

1.) Mic May Be a condenser Mic, and require a power supply.

2.) Mic may require a preamp.

What microiphone are you using??????

It may be incompatiable with the DVD player.  Read the manual.

Or if you are using the digital output, you won't get microphone level.

This unit looks interesting maybe as a cheap back up, however it doesn't look to be available in the states.  The Sanyo site linked is for Canada & the US site, don't have that model available.

First off, let me say thank you for the input you all have given so far!

Here is all the info I have on the mic I'm using :
Brand : I believe it is Audio-technica PRO5 (not new : 15 - 20 yo)
Type : 3 pin canon connector
Adaptor : I'm using it with a 1/4 adaptor so that I can plug it into my unit.

The mic and adaptor, as I mentioned in my other post worked fine when we pluged it into a neighbours home system (directly into the amp I believe).

I'm going to buy a mic that has a direct 1/4 connector. If this doesn't work I'll probably return the unit to Costco and rethink my setup.

MORE INFO :
The karaoke unit is hooked up to the amp of my suround sound system using RCA jacks (a/v jacks). My suround system (5 speakers + sub woofer) is about 8yo and does not have a digital input. The only problem with the Sanyo unit is the sound off the mic. the DVD audio / video are outputting fine.

Don't hesitate to write back if you have any other input.

Thank you !

Are you just using a naked adapter or is it a Line transformer.   I think Radio Shack has them.   About 5 inches long, pinkish color.    This one is 10 years old.   They might still have them.     The will make the mike work right.

I wouldn't look for a mic with a direct 1/4" input. Most are pieces of junk if they come standard with this. There are direct XLR (3-pin) to 1/4" mic cables where there is no adapter. If your mic is fine, just go get one of these.

Like someone else mentioned, maybe the mic input only works when a karaoke CDG is playing in the player. Test this before you start taking the parts that seem to work back!! Borrow a CDG from your buddy and see what happens!!

I picked up 2 items today :

ITEM #1 (20$)
XLR AUDIO ADAPTER TRANSFORMER
I believe it’s the type of adapter Bigdog described. I’ll try it with the mic I already have.

Description : A3F XLR jack to 1/4” phone plug Balanced mic/line to high impedance input.

ITEM # 2 (50$)
UNIDIRECTIONAL DYNAMIC MICROPHONE (with direct 1/4 connector)
As TopherM said, it will probably end up being a piece of junk, but I just want to see if it works. If sound is really bad I’ll take it back.

Description : Features single-direction pick-up pattern. 80-14,000 Hz frequency response. With wire-mesh windscreen, 6m (20') cable.

Once again, thanks for all the input. I caught the bug last August when I went to my first Karaoke party. I don’t know very much about all this stuff and your help is indispensable.

BTW, how come my photo doesn’t show up in the left margin? I uploaded an 80pixel X 100pixel gif in my settings, and it doesn’t show up when I post.

Ciao !

Well you could have saved yourself some money & just bought a new cord with the XLR on the mic end & a 1/4" on the other.

The cheap mic may actually sound better going through the built in mixer on the player - provided you get the sound coming through at all.

I'm really freaking out!!!!

I blew my front L and R speakers on my surround system while trying to test the new mic I picked up today.

It's totally my fault. I was attempting to play a CD in my DVD/karaoke player. I hadn’t selected the proper source on my amp. When I realized what a goof I was, I turned the selector to choose the DVD/karaoke player, and the speakers blew from HUGE feedback/noise because the amp was set to max.

I guess I adjusted the volume to the max while trying to figure out why the CD wasn't playing. The feed back stopped as soon as I pulled the mic wire out of the 1/4 plug.

So now, I still don’t know if the unit works with the new mic, and I also need new front speakers. I’m seriously thinking of returning all the karaoke stuff and forgetting about a home K setup. I think it only affected the front L+R speakers. Could it have damaged the others too?

I feel so @!#$% stupid.

Any suggestions on new front speakers : )
Do they have to be the same brand ad the ones I already have in place.

Ciao!

Well I would have to venture to say your mic works!  Feedback wouldn't occur if it wasn't - so that problem is solved.
Now, your home speakers do not need to be replaced with the same brand you already have.  If it's a matched set, then you may notice a difference.
One thing about home karaoke, live vocals & home systems don't mix very well, they will work, but you run the risk of blowing your speakers &/or amp.  A small PA system dedicated to the karaoke would be in your best interest - well after you replace the main speakers.
