confused by my new mixer

Post subject:  confused by my new mixer
i was having problems with my mic volume not being loud enough and was told that my karaoke players internal mixer wasn't any good and that i need to purchase an external mixer.

so i bought the one which was recommended to me here on the forums it's a behringer eurorack ub802. not really understanding what the mixers true purpose is i am having trouble getting it hooked up to my system.

i have an rsq player which runs to my stereo which powers my speakers. my question is where does the mixer hook in at? looking at the mixer i can only come up with 2 ways to hook it up but i wanna be sure 1st.

i tried plugging the mic into the mixer and then running that to the mic input on the player which didn't do anything. the only other option i see is running the l/r outputs from the player to the mixer and then running the outs from the mixer to the stereo???

i figured i better come and ask how to hook it up before i mess something up. LOL

OK,

The mixer is where all inputs connect.

Connect the player and mics to the mixer.

Then connect the mixer outputs to the amp inputs.

A mixer is designed to allow you to control the levels of all inputs and then 'mix' and blend them into a properly balanced blend of music and vocals....The amp then takes that signal and makes it more powerful and sends it to the speakers.

1.  Hook you cdg player into the TAPE IN input or if you want get an adapter to go from RCA of the cdg player to 1/4" inputs on the mixer (5/8 or 7/8)

2.  Don't use the mics that came with your cdg player, and don't try to input to the CDG player from the mixer.

3. You are going to have to by either powered speakers, or an external amp and passive speakers.

That is 2 mic inputs and plenty of inputs for your CDG player.

Then, for speakers for home use, you can jsut go with some studio reference speakers like this for $240. As long as you are not JACKING up the volume, these will work just fine!! They will be missing some of the low end, however...

OR, if you DO want to be able to play at larger volumes, just buy one larger powered speaker for now then get a second one later. Nothing wrong with running with just one speaker for home use!! Here's a 12" speaker for $225 that will give you good bass responce at home:

Both those ways work for under $300 total!!


You are not going to be able to get anything decent by just buying a mixer, you also need the speakers to go with it.

unless you bought a powered amp with an on-board mixer (some folks call PA systems mixers).  other than that the above stuff is correct, but i don't reccommend connecting your cdg player to the mixer by rca.  go ahead and buy rca-to-1/4 inch or better yet, buy rca-to-xlr connectors (assuming your mixer has them).  you will be better able to control your mix of low, mid and highs from your player to mix better with the low, mid and highs of your singers.  what type of mixing board did you get?  i run a 16x2 soundmaster and the above setup is what i use.  i have four mics into four different "ins" along with my cdg player (left and right input) on two more "ins".  i also run two sets of buffer music, one from my ipod (connected with a 1/8-to-1/4 stereo plug and a regular cd player (also 1/8-1/4 stereo).  PM me if you'd like a pic of how i set up my board with this configuration.

the diagram I made is correct for the mixer he purchased.  Read the original post.
And even if it was a powered mixer, the diagram is still correct.

Yes inputing from the CDG player to the mixer via 1/4" or XLR is better, but it is also possible to do it via the RCA TAPE IN inputs.

ok i have it working following thanks to you guys. :hi5:

i hooked it up through the tape in until i can get to radio shack to get some jacks. the only thing is my brand new shure mic won't work i bought 2 a pg58 which works fine but i have an sm58 that wont work and i'm using the same cord and input so, thats weird unless of course i got a bad mic(which i would think would be rare).

come christmas time i'm gonna follow your guys advice and buy me some nice powered speakers. thanks for helping once again. :D

Yeah sounds like a bad mic.  Good luck with the hoime system.

BTW....I recomed using behringers B300 poweered speakers, I have 4 of them and love em.  They get used at least once a week and have never had any problems.

No offense taken, just wanted to make sure the OP new that the diagram was correct for any any combo of mixer/speaker.
