Post subject:  Frustration with Fasttrack software

I have been using Fasttrack to track my song list for the last year or so. During that time, I had my disk drive crash a couple of times. Unfortunate part about their registration is that they generate a random serial number and you have to log in on their transfer request web site to get the new unlock code. First time it took about a week to get my program up and running.

This time, it's been 3 weeks and I am still not up and running. Most of the other software companies use either USB dongle or user name based unlock code that you can use over if you have to reinstall. I don't know why these guys are taking their sweet time doing it but while I like the software, I can't depend on it to run my business. I am going to have to move to something else.

I know MTU has a song book generating part, which I haven't used yet. Has anyone used it and tell me how flexible it is? Thanks in advance.

MTU's song book creator relies on a separate word processor to print if I remember right as it generates an .RTF file. Very much like karaoke Speedbook which is a good program.

True,

Hoster creates a rtf file, you can view or print it in microsoft word, or any program which will read a .rtf file. I have been using it for years. The only drawback I have is I have so many songs, I dont want to print all the dups. as it is right now it makes the .rtf file from the songs.mdb file. So I usually delete all the songs I dont want to print,  before I print the songbook. It is easily modified using access 97 database program.

You should try creating one, and look at it in word, and see what you think, it only takes seconds to compile.

Thanks for the response. Couple of things I did like about the FastTrack is that it allowed you to use the database to choose songs quickly. Yes, they did have some errors but they were easy to fix. Also, they generated several formats for the song book as well as web pages with song list so I can put them on the web. It's a nice program, I just wish their support is better.

This is surprising! I also use Fasttracks and when I've needed to transfer the software they have always been extremely responsive and helpful. Are you saying you haven;t got a response from them? Are you using a spam blocker that might be blocking a response?
Why not try giving them a call, I know they have a contact phone number on their website?

Well, it's solved now. They called me and straightened it out. I can't pinpoint where the problem was on email. I was getting responses to my email to them, which is their automated response email. Which means that their site is not blocked by my ISP. I also got their email request to fill out the transfer request form, which I did. The only email that I never got from them was the email with the unlock code. One of those mysteries of the Internet blackhole.

I am up and running but somehow my exported file only contains 1/10 of the information. I am going to have to start from scratch on entering discs. I made a mistake of not backing up the database but exporting the data to text file. Oh well, at least my printed version is current and should be good for a bit.

It's too bad that MTU doesn't name their kma's with the song name so that programs like SOnglist Generator or Fast Tracks Pro can import from your hard drive your songs so you can make your list from there. Actually there could be an easy way of fixing that with Fast TRacks as the KMA's are named or should be named by the manufaturer's disc number and the track number. With the proper filter Fast Track's digital list should be able to associate the right songs with the disc id.

As a matter of fact I licensed the exact code from SpeedBook to MTU to use for Hoster. For the first couple of years that they sold Hoster, they were using my compiled program (hprint.exe) which was supposed to be a stop-gap measure, bundled with Hoster.

So Danny, you are correct. It IS exactly like SpeedBook, since MTU has always been incapable or unwilling to write their own.
