For the last few weeks on TV here in NZ there has been a strange programme. It's called Big Love and its set in Utah. The series I guess is fictional and deals with poligamy. Does that really go on? Are they really as ostracised as the series make out? and if so why?
Its got me wondering why there is a law that says its illegal. Guess I had never really thought about it before. Its not my cup of tea but what is so bad about it?
Just thought I would ask is all

Read up on the Mormon Religion That's what it's about. Very interesting.

And no, poligamy is not legal anywhere in the US, but some of the mormon sects still practise it in silence.

What's so bad about it? Satisfying one mother-in-law is a full time job, imagine having 10 of them LMAO

just had a wee read, will study further, geez talk about religious fanatics...and I am not talking about the Mormons here but the many many websites devoted to damning any and all other religions.
I am pagan and proud to be. It is not something I have been born to or forced into by others. I dont belong to a coven simply because I dont want human influence.
The fanatics that damn everything other than their own beliefs (Bush in my opinion is one) are the true "demons" of this world.
Fact of the matter is if you believe in a higher being then chances are you believe in the same thing irrespective of the long corkscrew curls of the orthodox jew or the celibacy of the monks (debatable) and irrespective of what you call your god.
Nite folks time for this witch to park her broomstick and sip a sleeping draught from the chalice.
Blessed be

I've seen the show. I think it is a interesting view into this secret
world. How accurate it is, I don't know. I don't think it is morally right in this day
and age.

to be honest with you, I don't see the harm in practicing WHATEVER your faith allows you to do.

This is the same thing as those that don't want to utter "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, who don't want the phrase "a moment of silence" in public sports or events, who don't want this or want that.

Religious extremists will always be around. I could go on and on, but I won't, as you just can't debate religion without upsetting some folks.

I've seen one episode of that show, and it's fairly good. The shadow lives they lead are shadow now, but 20 years ago, it wasn't so. But I don't see the reason why it SHOULD be that way. What is wrong with multiple partners that promise themselves to each other, and are living their way according to their beliefs. It's not like they're a mosque and ringing in the bells for 12 hours like Clevland has to deal with, or are unwashed masses...

I guess one of the biggest problems with this way of life is inbreeding and
child abuse. They marry young girls at the ages 9 and up. They are usually
promised these girls by the family. They end up marrying relatives because they are
small hidden communities. It isn't just a matter of being able to take on more than one wife, but a whole different type of living period.

I'm with you on not telling people how to live their lives, but I don't think a lot of these girls have a choice.

Let me get this straight. Some sects still practice this but don't allow smoking or coffee or alcohol even in extreme cases of angst.

I couldn't do that. I have enough trouble making one woman happy. :D

If your beliefs break the laws of the land......you go to jail...it's simple, and there is no debate....my religion says kill others and take their money....hey, where's my freedom of religion.......I can't understand how they got away with it so long....they say these communities pay a few thousand dollars in taxes, and get back millions in welfare dollars.....besides.....I have a hard enough time keeping one woman happy :)

not that I wish to get into a theological debate but does it not talk about wives (plural) in the old testament?

another question for you all...is monogamy natural or have we just been conditioned to believing it is

There are I believe, only 5-7 in the entire animal world that mate for life.   Give me more women now.    And virgins when I die. :O

Like I said, Law of the land, and not your religious beliefs reigne supreme. You are free to go to another country that allows you to legally wed all the wifes you can support. And a country that would allow marriage to a child, should be nuked, as well as one that allows arrainged, as if a woman is some type of live stock. You have the right to remain single, and have as  many partners as you want, and thank goodness, they have to actually want to be with you.

couldnt agree more hon.
But my question is more rhetorical than anything else I am kind of trying to understand if it was the church who influenced the law or the law who influenced the church historically.
I have no doubt that either way its a power trip for someone
