OK, jumping outta the SALES PRESENTATION thread....How do you KJs/DJs go about getting new gigs.
I'll share my thoughts on the subject a bit later.

y'know, i posted this questoin about sixth months ago and the replies were many and varied.  I personally don't KJ for a living so I don't really actively seek out new venues or gigs.  That being said, I don't turn money down, either!  The shows I do sort of fall into my lap, if you will, and I'm quite alright with that.  I do only one show at the moment, but I have two weddings to DJ in the next month.  I guess my answer to your question is that I wait until someone approaches me about a new gig.  Won't work for those making a living by KJing, but for a fun thing to do, it works very well!

As I KJ part- time and have 1 steady gig on Saturdays  I am not actively seeking "new gigs" .  But in the very near future  I would like to add another weekly gig.  In the past I have had luck getting referrals from some of my regular singers who Karaoke at a few different bars during the week.  They will always let me know if either a KJ is quitting or a venue is not happy with the current KJ.  If at that time I am interested I will  contact the Manager and set up a "SALES PRESENTATION"

In the past I have also sent out brochure mailings followed up by phone calls to see if the bar has any interest.  Admittedly I have never JUST STOPPED IN but many KJ's feel this is the BEST WAY to land a job.  :thinkin:  :thinkin:

I go in and tell them, I have the crappiest sounding system, the cheapest mikes, the smallest song book, no following, I play favorites with the rotation, I suck when I sing and I can chase all of your customers away in 1 month, for less money than everyone else.

Works every time.   LMAO

I can work more than anyone.   Steady too.

Sounds like the mentality of most bar owners.

I don't. I'm completly booked.

Everyone has found me, I have never needed to find a bar gig. There is a line now of bars that if I ever quit one of my bars, they would like a phone call.

I'm not a KJ but have been gigging for 7 years. The first 6 years we REALLY needed the gigs and the money as we only had part time jobs and both were sporadic. Sods law we both now have full time day jobs and would be quite happy with sporadic and we are booked most weeks. I do however only take one job per week (unless there is one come in mid-week) because I prefer to give absolutely everything to a gig and if that means I sing my heart out for 6 hours so be it. If I was backing up with one the next day I would have to be a bit more careful
Most of our work is now repeat business, or we get a gig from a gig. I am regular once a month in the restaurant of the hotel I work for, plus do odd times in the bar there. A hotel in the next town block books us a year ahead normally once a month, but it will be our 6th NY eve there lol. and the rest of the time its private functions
