When hosting a show in my neck of the woods each singer who performs in a duet is counted as having their turn in a given rotation. We have even left the last hour open only to duets. Seems like no matter how you handle it, someone gets their shorts in a knot. Anyone have a magical solution that seems to be flawless or do you do one or the other of the above.

hahah not me...when I was a kj I would always count a duet as their turn in a rotation. I used to have a whole netball team come in every saturday night and would put their names up one after the other then all want to get up and sing together. The first time it happened was the last time. I would call the first name, the whole fekkin team would get up and drunkenly sing thru 2 mics so then I would move to the next real singer. They used to complain to the owner about how unfair I was and that I didnt like them, but they wouldnt play fair and I had real singers to look after. They used to call me vinegar t i ts

to me, a duet is a turn for BOTH singers... they're both in the spotlight, so to speak, and the singers don't recognize who's TURN it is, no matter how you try to explain them. They just see a dufus up there more than once, and get their knickers in knots!
The duet people hate it, as they feel they have "half a song". Personally, I could care less how many duets are sang, I just don't want someone singing a duet with someone and then having "their" turn, as that starts the whole way of "how to cheat the rotation and get up more than once"... you'll see these types... walking all over the bar and signing up for duets with more than one person.
I'm all for getting other folks involved, but not at the expense of the complaints I get with "why does SHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE get to sing so many times?"

It doesn't matter which way you do it, your preference. However, no matter which way you choose, you must be consistant.

I usually ask when a duet comes up who's rotation they want to sing this on. That way it counts as that person's rotation but not against other person's.

A singer in the rotation has the right to sing with whomever they want. It is not my job or my right to dictate (I'm not Hitler) to a singer who they can or can not sing with. I don't care if they want to have everyone in the bar sing with them. When it's your turn you can sing with whomever you want. I am not going to penalize someone for singing a duet, on their turn. Each singer has a pile of slips. And a duet is going to come off of somebody's pile. I usually go by the first name on the slip. I very rarely get complaints. I use to have a few people that thought the duet singers should have their own pile or spot in the rotation. I don't think so. They wanted to do a solo song then a duet. WRONG. Someone is going to have that song on their pile. You decide who. I'll play it. Nobody ever sings more then once in a rotation. If it's a duet, I name the person whose pile it's coming from first. The second name doesn't matter to me and it shouldn't matter to anyone else. I treat everyone the same. They all know I don't screw around with playing favorites.

They're up twice, no matter how you justify it.
I've tried it your way too, B.D... and I was always having to explain to people about it... I got tired of the explainations.
That doesn't make me HITLER... sheesh! I just have a different rule than you do!

Agreed. "Sally" puts in a duet with "Bob" then "Bill", then "Tom" then "Harry", no sally has sang four times in the same rotation. Ain't go happen here. But again, to each their own.

It still came off of one persons pile. They got charged with that song. Each singer has their own pile. The singing partner has their own pile. They will sing with however many people they choose.
It goes something like this.
Farmer is bringing home his new bride. The horse is pulling the wagon. The horse suddenly sits down in the middle of the road. The farmers yells at the horse to get up. Nothing happens. He again yells at the horse, nothing. He gets off of the wagon and goes up to the horse and punches it in the head. The horse gets up and starts walking. The farmer tells the horse that's one. The new bride is shocked but says nothing.
A few miles down the road the same thing happens again, exactly the same. After the punch the farmers says to the horse, that's two. The shocked bride says nothing.
Again a few miles down the road the same scenario. The farmer gets off of the wagon and walks up to the horse and says, that's three. He pulls out his gun and shoots the horse. The new bride yells at the farmer in horror and surprise, What did you do that for? The farmer replys to her, That's one.
I don't get too many complaints.
As to Mary singing with everyone in town. If Mary puts in a duet with everyone in the bar, she still only sang once in the rotation. If they asked Mary to sing with them, on their turn. It was their song, not Mary's. So why should you penalise, Mary by not letting her have her own turn to sing, by herself or with whomever she wants. One slip for each singer in the rotation. Nobody is singing twice.
People usually want to sing with the better singers. So if Mary wasn't so good she wouldn't be so popular. If she sucked nobody would want to hear her all night.
This has nothing to do with how I run the rotation, but it's just an observation.

I think you at least have to count a rotation turn for one of the singers.
Except if
Mary sings with Bob because he's a good singer . Bob ends up singing 95% of the song becuase..Mary STINKS
Then Mary's friend Bettty wants to sing with BOB ........ Well because Betty your drunk and you STINK. SO Bob ends up singing 95% of the song again
I say ENOUGH BOB already..... You just missed you SOLO song

Sad to admit it, but I agree with BIGDOG on this one.
I could care less who sings with who, but the song has to get charged to someone's spot in the rotation.
Look at it this way.....
You have 15 people in the rotation.
the first person sings =1person in rotation
then a group of 4 sings =5people sang in rotation
then another person sings =6 people sang in the rotation
then a duet sings =8 people sang in rotation
another 4 some sings =12 people sang in rotation
now the last 3 sing alone =15 people sang for rotation
OK that is 8 songs for the first rotation....
Now the next rotation, and everyone is singing solo. Instead of only waiting for 5 songs, the last 3 in the rotation have to wait for 12 songs to be sang.
I feel it would be much more fair to charge a duest to one person, it would keep the rotation size more consistant. But I usualy don't have mush of a problem with groups singing, most of my singers go solo.

Back On Topic - sorry I couldn't resist
I'm consistantly different - does that make sense. Everyone knows how
it works in my bar, so I don't have any problems. Once in a while a newbie
comes along and I may have to explain it. Most of the time I'll do it like Eben and Bigdog. If there is a duet one person loses a turn. I ask them when the slip comes up whose turn will this be counted as. All the regulars know this so they just tell me
right off the bat. If it is a crazy busy night I will announce duets count as a turn for both people. I also remind them when they put in the slip, so there isn't any confusion. It's funny how when they lose their turn if they do a duet they stop doing them. It makes my life a lot easier when I am swamped.
I had a problem with this situation when I first started. The difference now is, I've
been doing karaoke in this bar a long time. It takes a while for people to get used to the rules. Once they have been established for a while they stop complaining and learn this is the way it is no matter if they like it or not.
It is very true you need to stick to your guns and keep things consistant. I just have a variation to how I do it. It works for me. Believe me I have been through the ringer on this one.
There are exceptions -
It is someones birthday. A person is singing and halfway through the song asks the birthday person to join them. Do I penalize the b-day person and make him skip his turn - NO.
It is someones birthday and I call up their friends to sing Happy Birthday to them.
Do I make all those people skip their turn - NO.
I have never had a problem with treating a b-day person special. Of course no one has ever abused the priviledge either. Do I have a ton of birthday parties in my bar?
YES!!!
Rotation has always been discussed on this site.

Not here, both singers = 1 turn for both. It's all audience perception. It may technically be no more extra time to have John sing, then Betty & John, then Larry & Betty, then Tom & John, etc... but to the audience it looks as though John has sang 3 times (which he has), Betty sang twice (which she has), etc...I've had this rule in effect since the beginging of my company with little to no complaints. People know & understand it & accept it as well.

I understand Lon. That is what has worked great for you and you keep it consistant.
I just find I can accomodate more people on a slower night when I can
count it as one persons turn not both. I don't have problems doing it this way - if I did, you bet I would do it your way. Like I said when it gets crazy busy I have to do it the way you do, just to keep my sanity. LOL

slower nights is the exception, Babs! I don't think Lonnie can REMEMBER a slow night!
I put my rule (which is the same as Lonnie's) when people began to abuse the rotation.
If you and Bigdog and twain and everyone else has a different approach, fine, but that STILL DOESN'T MAKE ME FRIGGIN' HITLER!!!!
SHEESH!
Psttt... Babs.... "Knickers!"

Oh I get those dreaded slow nights. Weeknights are hit or miss. Last night I had 20 singers, last Thursday I had 5.

I would say, chose a way, how erver you want to do it, and stick with it. THe regulars will get used to it, and newbies will have to deal with it.
I would say that if you have a gig with a majority of regulars, use the 1duet counts for 1 person in rotation.
If you have a gig with lots of newbies, and a changing crowd, use the duet counts for both singers in rotation method.
If you are in the middle, GET OFF THE FENCE and pick a side......

All singers in rotation have 1 turn per round...
Any singer can invite who they want to sing with...
A singer can only be invited to sing in a duet once per round.
I did have a situation a few months ago where 4 or 5 college gals would come in and sing any combo You never knew who was gonna sing with who. If there was 4 of them about 4 or 5 spots was one of them and the gang.. A couple of them were music majors and they were awesome.. They had fun, the young guys watchin had fun and no complaints. My people know if I (once in awhile) screw up and somebody gets cheated they will benefit before the night is over...
Rotation is one of the few things I get serious about but the rules on it changes with all the different formats we run..
I too for years was geared to herding as many singers thru as possible but depending on the rowd now might not be the case. My regulars and I have sang for many years when I am out and not hosting I can relax and dont really care if I sing every rotation. Its the same with most in there. Relax and flirt and visit. Get aquainted with the newbies in the bar...
Then there are nights when everybody is chomping at the bit so you go go go ...Lets get up there lets go!!!!If somebody isnt on the mic right now they are bumped!!!! We can do that too....There are 40 different nuances between Go Go and total DJ...And at any moment we can be doing any of them depending on the crowd or bar energy... If it was relaxed and chuck wanted to sing twice during a round he would sing and I wouldnt get any complaints..
