, thanks Kappy, I just shot green tea out my nose laughing so hard. Of course it wasn't in reference to 9-11, that's still a very touchy and tender subject with me. But that pic, very cute man. |

No, I know 9-11 is a touchy subject.. It's just that with all the crazy-stuff going on in the world today, Under the bed might be the safest place on the 5th year anniversary of such an event... I suppose I was goofing on superstition... Do you recall how many thought New Years Eve 2000 was going to be Armegaddon ? Companies were selling bomb shelters... It's true... some fundamentalists thought the world was going to come to an end.. Personally, I never saw such a pretty New years eve display all over the world as the new millenium display... Was it Norway or Iceland that had the ice sculpting ? Absolutely gorgeous display.... China and that woman on top of a mountain bringing in the new Millenium.. I had the TV on all night watching how different cultures were bringing in the new Millenium, best TV watching I've ever seen IMHO.. Anyway, there were some affordable bomb shelters shortly after the new year LOL.. Some things you just have to laugh at... Like the satellites falling back to earth, and companies selling helmets, and padding so a person won't get as hurt... .. Funniest part, those who buy the stuff |

How many time zones is Alaska in dsharrow ? 2 or 3 or 4 ? I assume with the Aleutians 3 ? Just wondering because far north where the Aleutians extend to the Bering Strait, seems as though that's quite distant east. I don't know. |

Used to be 4 total for the entire state. (Remember if you overlay Alaska onto the lower 48 we extend from FL to CA.) Many years back we voted to make it just one. That one time zone is the same as Yukon time (PST -1 hour). We change to daylight savings time only because businesses want to stay with the same time difference from their suppliers/home offices. Hard to get any benefit from DST when, in the summer, it never gets dark. I would much prefer to have DST in the winter. Also, I don't know how y'all stand that whole 'sun set then dark' thing. Up here it stays light for hours after sunset. |

Hate to say this, but as a chief, and a firefighter for over 20 years, I'm really tired of the 9/11 saga. Yes, I hate it that so many lives were lost. But after the first three months following 911, I was never so tired of so many tributes and praises. And mainly because of all the commercialism. If I see one more TV add for "Tribute To The Heroes" for $19.99,...and commerative coins! I had a local business call Friday and ask if they could bring a couple of cakes by our Central Station to give the guys and say thanks. I said sure. "What time can I expect you?" Her reply,....."We don't know yet. Depends when the newspaper can come by to do the pictures." Just about told them what they could do with the cake. Most in the police and fire service do this job because we truly enjoy what we do. If you want to thank a police officer or a firefighter,...walk up to them when you see them and shake their hand; pat them on the back; simply say," Thank you for what you do." That means so much more than any fan fare that so often is tied to a commercial for some other event. Every one rememebers 9/11. I would much rather everyone remmeber 11/9. Anyone???? Not many do. November 11th, 1989. The Berlin Wall came down. Now that's a destruction of concrete and steel that should always be celebrated. Kelly |

Thanks, I do know Alaska is huge ! I wasn't sure if it was the Aleutians that extended far into the pacific or if it was the northern part of the coast that extends close to Siberia to the Bering Strait. |

Kelly, Excellent points btw.. I won't get into political distortions that took place as a result as well.. and opportunistic attempts manipulating and overlooking some massive issues. If so many heads weren't in the sand, despite so many prior warnings, it NEVER would've happened. JMO.. We had MANY warnings in the 1990's, Y2K, and six weeks prior on a prime-time program warning us - this was either 60 minutes or 20/20 (NYC cab-ride interview explaining how vulnerable our Sky-Scrapers were to our own planes being used as missiles). WHile some view this as heroics, I view it as too much arrogance denying that this could happen despite other attempts and close calls, past attempts thwarted yet still no locked cockpits, and certain measures such as having security on these jumbo jets or somebody armed and prepared in a cockpit after several similar events were attempted in the past decade. Assuming we took heed, locked our cockpits, and took a few other warnings more seriously, it could've been avoided in the first place.. For us to believe "This is the United States, nobody will mess with us, or do such a thing is just erroneous given our involvement in politics in others parts of the world. My feelings are we didn't become a Super Power having our heads in the sand. We were warned, never should've felt invulnerable given history, and certain possibilities. I get angry when I think about this |

The Aleutian Islands extend the furthest. I've been on Little Diomede, back during the cold war, and looked through our telescope at Big Diomede and waved at the Soviet soldier looking back at me Those were the days! |

How far across the Bering Strait is the Soviet ? Don't mean to bother you about this, I just find alot fascinating with Alaska, and the northern area's of Canada, probably because I require cooler temps to breath and survive.. Something really peaceful about locations such as Dot Lake, and some of the small rural towns that hardly even have plumbing facilities, etc.. Just peaceful from what I've read. Alot of the reservations too... Just seem so tranquil compared to having lived my whole life within short area of NYC. |

Steve, it's about 10 miles. I would think about the life style change required if you moved here from NYC. Comparatively it is like stepping into a totally different culture. I live in Anchorage, population ~256,000, which is considered by us 'Sourdoughs' as a HUGE metropolis and the only location in Alaska with a full range of services. Of course here we consider waiting at any traffic light for more than 3 minutes a major traffic jam. Personally, I start sweating at 65 deg (F) but if eventually moving south will make my better half happy .... FIRE UP THE AC!!! |

Oooops, forgot to mention everyone. I have traveled through or to most of the Canadian provinces and every state except Maine thanks to my parents taking me to see relatives as a child and then 21 years in the military (ARNG). |

As do I. Add any amount of humidity to a temp even lower than that, and I risk going into heat exhaustion at around 60 degrees F. :( I must have Eskimoan blood. |

Yah I heard that they found a Star of David burried in the ruins of an igloo dating back a few thousand years. |

The only reason they didn't find any yamakas is because they were made of ice. They found instructions on how to make one. |
