I used to play party poker and I play in a real TH game every Tuesday night with some buddies. There is also one Indian Casino and two dog tracks that have poker rooms here in town, though I have never played at any of those.
To relate this back to karaoke, there have been some KJs concerned that the poker nights at bars are giving karaoke a run for its money. I know my bar has a game every Thursday. The system they play with is simply an interactive DVD that costs like $100 and directs everyone through about a 2 hour tournament (max). Granted, on the BEST nights, the TH game will have about 75 people in the bar, about 30-40 of which are playing the poker, AND poker players don't seem to drink as much as karaokiers, but considering there was just a one-time investment of $100 for the DVD plus the actual poker supplies, it costs the owner practically nothing to host the game. So, at my bar at least, karaoke still makes more $$ for the bar and can still co-exist with the poker game. At many other bars, though, especially smaller bars and biker-type bars in the area, the owners have REPLACED karaoke with the TH game!!

I played as much as I can in the past, mostly online. I play at FTP and did pretty good. I was in the money every 2-3 tournaments with 9-18 players. Then I tried tournaments with larger number of people. It's too time consuming and there are a lot of bad players out there. So, I recently cut down my hours of playing after a particular streak of bad beats and losing. It is a fun game and I like the fact that it's more about reading people's motivation than getting lucky at cards, mostly.

I have seen some bars around here hosting "Holdem Leagues" I'm not sure if they have replaced alternate forms of entertainment , But I would think that the card games would have to be held in BACK ROOMS were there are tables and such?
I can't see them holding these games in the MAIN bar room , but then again I guess it all depends on the bar setup. I wonder what a bar onwer/manager would pay someone to HOST a Poker Night and Sing at the Same Time :rotflmao:

Yeah our HoldEm tournies started out with 1 or 2 tables in the bar, now it's gotten so popular, they dropped their dart leagues for those nights & there are easily 8-10 tables with about 8-10 players per table. We are still doing karaoke those nights, but have a feeling it will be cancelled if it gets any bigger. Although alot of the players are also singers & they do stick around often after they're out of the tourny or sing between games.

These BAR tourneys ..are they just for fun??? or is it real money games ???
Lonnie
I guess if the card games bring in people and they stay around to sing it COULD be a good thing ...... The thing with poker touneys is the ELIMINATION FACTOR its not like they can stay all night and play cards (unless they are lucky).

Most bars don't have gambling licenses so they are just for points/fun. No actual money involved, no buy in, no cash out. I guess the points get accumulated and at the end of the month you get awards/prizes or whatever!?!? They are spreading around the bars faster than karaoke did when it started & are they always packed. We have a group that used to be karaoke regulars now they hop to the these tournies almost nightly. They don't come exclusively for karaoke anymore, but will sing if one of the clubs they are at have it.

Local clubs/bars here are expanding into poker also.....Those 'just for fun' games are usually covers for real money....so far the cops are ignoring them....so far.
Myself, I ain't never lost a cent to gambling.....I have a deep respect for money and it's just too much fun to spend on something I can bring home to risk gambling.
I may come home broke, but you can believe I got something nice to show for it.
Hey, did you see today where the Feds are cracking down on all the online gambling sites?
