Depending on the brand go on the net and download that manus setup software and do a low level format if necessary. It will reformat and give you partion options too.. I should add the low level format is last resort the the reformat should work... |

I should add that I used winxp to format it before I removed it from old computer.....I should know better that to use Windows for anything I expect Winduhs to run on.

This is so screwed up! I just cleaned off then reformated a spare 160 GB drive, then popped it in his computer and attempted to install WinXP.....it stalled and said there was no win XP compatable partition, to go back and create one....When I tried, it went into the same loop......Now it's saying the new 160GB drive is only 15GB I hate windows. |

Yeah, also someone mentioned doing a low level format. That is different than an OS format. The low level sets it back to factory specs and writes all zeros to the drive. You then place it in the computer and let Windows XP through setup disk install partitions. You have to set up partitions first and then Windows will format the OS to the partitions and then it will install the OS and all drivers. If you don't low level format then Windows XP will see those old partitions and try and create a new one instead. You can get it to reuse / rewrite the existing partitions but it is very difficult. You have to hit the correct key sequences as the prompts come up. There is a knowledgebase article about doing this on Microsoft.com. Microsoft did this to help protect existing partitions, and also sometimes people wish to put multiple OS's on their drives. I recently had problems with a guy on Ebay when I sold my notebook drive to him. He thought it didn't work, because it gave him the error you mention, but he wasn't setting the drive up properly. I think he finally got it after I sent him detailed instructions because I never heard from him since then. It can be confusing and frustrating though. Believe me you aren't the first to come up against this. It is also real confusing if you have to load some drivers off diskette to make the hard drive work with the motherboard and don't realize it, because it will eventually just fail install. Once again you have to know what key to hit and when in order to install those drivers. Best of luck, Bill |

The Maxblast was needed 'cause the old bios may not have seen the "newer" drive.. |

Coming from a rural background my sister used a hard drive for 6 months and most of the time when she booted up she had to tap it to get it going... |
