I notice a good number of you rag on the computer karaoke system. You are on here so you are not completely computer illiterate. I have started this some time ago. I have a 1 gig usb flash drive with all of the songs I like to sing. Most Kj's in my area are computer setup, when I go to karaoke I write up a slip and hand the KJ my usb flash drive. So I suggest that the people that prefure to have there own versions get a usb flash drive and rip all of their cd+g's and carry this when you go to karaoke. |

We have been doing that. I am looking for a good protection progam that will make the flash read only. Also we record singers and put on the flash drives vocal or full. A concept I am thinking about now is software that when you plug in their flash it automatically puts their selections for the night in the rotation que. Also it could put their singer history and other things into a text file on their flash... |

I'm computerized, but I wouldn't accept other people's mp3+gs... first of all, there's a few different versions. Cavs, WinCDG and KMA files. I also wouldn't trust a flash drive to not have virii or trojans. The only people I would accept them from I would have to develop a trust relationship with them. It's far easier OVERALL to just burn your selections, and bring me the cdr! |

How intersting, sounds like a wonderful idea until you add the thought of infection. It sounds like Kayoker has the right idea to try to protect himself. For me I would prefer my clients bring in their CDGs anyway my usb port is behind my rack mount which is hard to get to with out some doing. |

Down at Wallys they have usb hubs like these... All the usb devices we use are from people we have known for years and prompted them to get them initially. They are not that common yet but I can see the day when it might be advisable to scan the flash either in a wireless terminal or seperate comp..I wouldnt burden the system comp with anti virus but it wouldnt bother the wireless term to have it. |

the usb protocol allows up to 127 devices to hook up. You'd eventually have to have some kind of hub, or a usb piggyback to fully utilize it other than the 1-2 ports for a laptop, and 2-6 for a desktop. Karaoker I realize you trust these folks, but the sheer nature of infections is that they happen gradually. Trojans slip in unannounced... that's their way! ! My show pc is off the net, I don't run antivir because of that, and no, I'll not be accepting any usb connections as a result. I also don't have a cdrom on the show pc, to keep people from the thought that I could rip their tracks from them... I have a cdg player on the side for customers... |

Yea I agree with you matt but seems like ever since I put XP on my system comp for some reason or another I have to reinstall it every 6 weeks or so.. If I did get a virus it didnt have time to do anything or the system wasnt working good enough for the virus to work... No it wasnt the virus that caused the crash Sometimes I get a wierd notion about going back to cd's open the closet door and that notion goes away in a hurray.. |

Oh I hear ya... my file organization went bye-bye some time ago! ! I had binders, now 50 spoolers, and now 100 spoolers of the cdgs!! besides, I've gone the route of buying a year and a half of the THM six packs in mp3+g format. I have no choice now but to be computerized!! I still convert my other cdgs when I buy them... so if I went the OTHER way around, I'd have to convert the mp3gs to cdgs! Oy! |

Bad idea if you ask me (althought the principal is good) A virus checker won't do you any favours if someone is deliberately targeting you or has an unknown. Stick with karoake machine for customer discs or run a separate PC fully nailed down that doesn't connect to anything other than the mains outlet and your PA ever!! Keep an image so you can recover easily every time it goes down. |

I have never had any problems. Computer virius are not as abundant as you may think especially when you are just reading a file. I could see if you were running a exe from someone but reading a file there is very minimal worry. |

Viruses can be hidden and executed in all manner of ways. Even if virus' wern't abundant you would have serious problems if a competitor or some wise guy decided to have go at your system. Then there are the people who have obtained thier files from less than reputable sources. Simply using double filename extensions is enough to trick some people but even media files can contain malicious code e.g. the fairly recent jpeg issue. Of course with these types of malicious code what they are really doing is exposing a weakness in the player such as causing buffer overflows to allow execution of the code. I don't think this type of threat is partiularly wide spread. |

virii are not just executables. there could be a hidden file embedded in the thumbnail drive. Is it possible? yes. Do I really think it'll happen... maybe! If the threat is there, I'm NOT gonna do it! ! |

I won't let anybody probe my computer orifics with anything but a CDG disc. Computer question. Can somebody put a virus on a home burnt karaoke disc and infect the computer? |

Computer question. Can somebody put a virus on a home burnt karaoke disc and infect the computer? If they wanted to, they could. I have had one virus on all of my computers dating back since I had 1st gotten internet in 1988. I have dedicated internet computers, all of my DJ machines only touch the net for the occasional windows update. |

The problem with having all the songs you sing on a USB flash drive is that it makes it very easy for a computer KJ to steal your songs without your knowledge. I would never even bring a disc to a show using a computer unless they have no external or internal cdrom drive on the computer and a separate CDG player. Computers make it WAY too easy to steal. Computer KJ's should set their systems up like Knightshow and have no cdrom drive present and bring along a CDG player. |
