I don't know who these guys think they are, but they're messin' with my favorite solar system!!!  This kind of nonsense has to stop!  LOL

"PLUTO GETS THE BOOT! ---------
Pluto no longer a planet, say astronomers.

Thursday, August 24, 2006; Posted: 10:27 a.m. EDT (14:27 GMT)

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight."

Oh great, now the planets are leaving us too? First it was site members now it's planets?

I am not happy. Did I really say something bad enough for Pluto to be downgraded like that?

Me and my big mouth.

I remembered talk of this before. So they've made it official now.
don't worry Pluto isn't going anywhere  LMAO

It's like the tomato - first we thought it was a vegetable now we find out it is a fruit.
Doesn't matter I still eat them.  LMAO

Oh man, now Pluto is a fruit. Or are tomatoes made of Plutonium?

I just had lunch but I could go for a grilled moon sammich. As long as it doesn't get tinkled on.

I read an article on this last week. They actually added a 10 planet along with Pluto when they officially made Pluto a planet back in the 1930s. They then realized that the other planet was orbiting the sun in an asteroid belt and should therefore be classified as a very very big astoriod, so they stopped calling it a planet in the 1940s. Same thing this time around with Pluto. Pluto is in a highly eliptical orbit suggestive of an astoroid belt, suggesting that for clarification purposes it is more accurate to call it a really big astoroid than a planet.

This also comes after they have discovered three bodies of mass that are much bigger than Pluto over the last 10 years, but these are also in highly eliptical orbits sugestive of astoroid behavior. The Pluto decision was less about making Pluto NOT a planet as it was defining the word PLANET before we ended up with 25 of them!!

It used to be based solely on an arbitrary mass size. Well, like I said, within the last 10 years they have discovered three bodies of mass larger than Pluto, so should they have been introduced as planets as well?? Instead of doing this, they redefined planet to mean the bodies of mass that are in more circular orbits around the sun, and got rid of the mass component (though, of course, their mass is what makes their orbits more circular!!. So now we have, and by the new definition should ALWAYS have 8 planets (barring a castostrophic event), and that is that!!

But I do want science teachers everywhere to regrade all of their astronomy tests from the past 76 years!! I knew Pluto was a dog, and not a planet!!

it's okay that pluto is no longer a planet....i have gained enough weight over the past couple of months that i now have a gravitational feild around my huge body (no uranus jokes!) and i also have a moon!  (no black hole jokes either!)

Hmm I think it all comes down the size.  Must have been male scientists whom didn't feel quite adequate in themselves.... so they had to pick on the smallest planet.

Acording to the USDA, the tomato is classified a vegtable, although it is technically a fruit.  Ya get the best of both worlds, well, unless you live on Pluto.   LOL

as far as Pluto is concerned, they've been wanting to declassify that for a long time. I remember in Junior High (what they call MIDDLE SCHOOL nowadays) in the mid seventies the various discussions about what constitutes the idea behind a planet, and that technically, Pluto was really the size of a Planetoid... but they wanted to keep it a planet like a grandfather clause...

The one thing I love about Astronomy is that the more we dig into it, the more we learn. And of course, the better the technology, the more we find out and understand.

Man, I love eating crab. If there is a secret planet of crab people, I'm going to show up with my butter, and lemon and conquer!!!

I don't care what these "scientists" say. I say there are 9 planets and Pluto is one of them, and that's the way it's going to remain.

OK, we discovered five large bodies in the 1800s (Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, Hygeia) that were declared planets at the time. All of these objects are around the same size or larger than Pluto AND orbit between Mars and Jupiter.

There are TWELVE, count them TWELVE objects about the same size or larger than Pluto past Neptune (Chiron and Sedna being the largest).

There is even an object called Charon that orbits near Pluto that is almost the same size.

Why are these 17 objects not planets? Because in both cases, the first four objects and the other twelve object are in the same orbits with other countless objects, which by definition makes them astoriods.

Pluto is in the same orbit with uncountable smaller objects. By definition, that makes it an astoroid.

The definition of a planet according to the International Astronomical Union:

a celestial body that is (a) in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit

So, you can pick. We can either change the definition and go back to the old definition, in which case we have about 25 planets that we know of, or we can stick to the new, more consise definition and FOREVER have 8 planets.

We had a crappy definition, so we IMPROVED the definition. It's called PROGRESS for all you ignorants out there!!
