I watched 2 excellent movies the other night, so I thought I'd share. "Hotel Rawanda" - excellent true story- very well done "Nell" - Jody Foster out does herself in it These are older movies I've seen to miss when they were out. If you all have some older movies to see that are a must - please share |

Not sure what you haven't seen Babs, but some of my favorites: Comedy-ish: Ed Wood Raising Arizona Heathers Wag The Dog Primary Colors- More of a Dramady I guess, but I love it. High Fidelity The Castle- Austrailian film Gross Pointe Blank Drama: The Godfather- (of course) October Sky Almost Famous The Big Chill As Good As It Gets Ghandi Documentory: Roger & Me These are the only a few that I could think of at the moment, but there's definately more out there. Not sure how old they had to be  .

Criterion has a beautifully remastered "real time" version of Buster Keaton's "The General" out on DVD. The movie was made in 1925. I've often read about his great pantomime and acrobatic skills but had never really seen anything watchable (so many of these old silent movies were in such a state of decomposition it was very difficult to sit through). He was simply amazing. This is the famous movie where he's standing in front of a house and the whole thing comes down on top of him and he just left standing there where the doorway was, only it's on the ground. This was not done with computer generated effects or a stunt person. They did some pretty amazing things in those early days of film--we tend to think they were in the dark about special effects and other cinematic devices but I'm always astounded at the ingenuity these pioneer filmmakers had... |

Wow Michael - that is interesting - my fiancee is a video editor and he'd probably get a kick out of seeing that. Kjchris - thank you for taking the time to list those. There are few I'd like to see. |

How curious...I'm a video/film editor myself (yes folks--I know it seems like I'm sitting here 24 hours per day but I actually am employed). I work on local TV spots and other commercial films...it's enough to drive most people out of their minds but I rather enjoy doing it--would love to edit a real movie one day--I've helped on some student films, probably the closest I'll ever get! |

My Dave does local commercials in the Chicago area. He works on Avid. He is always saying how he'd love to do a movie - just one. He works long hours. Are you free lance? |

No, in fact, I work through an ad agency...do a lot of this stuff from home which suits me fine. I can understand his yearning to do a dramatic film or documentary--it's where the art of editing can really make a vital impact on the content of the story being told...naturally, I've read every book on film editing there is since I got out of school--it is fascinating. I should talk about it at length here one of these days. Even the casual moviegoer would find some of the "rudiments and laws" of film editing very interesting I'm sure. Some of them, I'm still not sure why they work like they do, but film editors over the years have developed sound reasons for why things are done certain ways--there is a lot of psychology involved as well. Example: to give the appearance of a calm, relaxed setting in a medium long shot, pan the camera starting from left to right but do not tilt or move up or down. Avoid vertical lines in the subject area. Stuff like that.... |

Movies? My passion for movie run as long as my passion for food. I have netflix.com since the beginning and I have rented over 3000 movies and rated about half of that. I love movies. I am partial to indies and foreign films but I will watch anything under the sky. My favorite foreign films: Tres Colours (Three colors red, blue and white, three movies from France) Jean de Florette Cinema Paradiso Au Revoir Les Enfant Seven Samurai Yojimbo Madadayo Ran Satyricon I have tons more but that's all I can think of right now. |

I'm especially fond if Cinema Paradiso Jian...I think anyone that truly loves the movies should see it! Note to Odie: Oh, I don't know--the types of stuff I get to deal with are like images of awful looking cheeseburgers, the homely (and hugely untalented) offspring of some furniture dealer pitching their dad's wares, monster truck rally commercials....real glamorous stuff! You do reach a point where you don't even think about the actual content, just the flow and impact desired, but it's nothing like editing a motion picture. I'm actually filming a "movie" on video where my headquarters building is...it should be done some time in the fall of 2011! |

I dunno why, she was excellent in it IMO Havent seen the other one but watched " Cinderella Man " the other night I liked that one pretty good and " 50 First Dates " was a good romantic comedy |

I can't wait to see 'The Illusionist' I'm kinda curious about 'Wickerman' too there's been quite a few movies lately that I've actually WANTED to see..... most of the time it all looks like crap! |

Just saw "little miss sunshine" Excellent! Bypass talledega nights (which was good) and see this one first! you know a movie is good when it has no hype and climbs from #20 on the box office to #3 all on its own merit over a 5 week period. major stars are steve carrol (40 year old virgin) and greg k (as good as it gets). |
