hey guys I was wondering what I should pay for a wireless modem
for home use. I guess I'll need an adapter also since it is for 2 desk top
pcs. Any ideas on price or where I can get a good deal?

That is one of the best ones. I have dialup at home and got a wireless router. It took me 40 days to get a wireless connection where I got on the internet once ...Its unhooked now If I really need it I take my laptop down to Star Bucks LOL

I dont think a dsl is that hard to setup tho.......

I was just looking at that one. I went to Howstuffworks.com and it
seems like a nice setup. Are you using Ethernet adapters?

I didn't want to lose any speed, so the 802.11g sounded good to me.
I have DSL. I'm planning on getting the kids laptops for college, so I'd be killing 2 birds with one stone here. Networking 2 desk tops and a couple laptops in the future.

I have everything wireless, i have several laptops, etc.My desktop is also wireless... Have for years now, but, wwhen my connection is down, i just leech off of the neighbors... People need to change the default log/pass:) Don't forget to do yours too:)

Anyways, easy to set up.. plug and play, some people don't understand the whole firewall thing, and get upset when they can't access certain things, and programs correctly. You have to open a lot of ports, for p2p apps, and chat progs, etc.

I am babbling. You get the point.

Do you mean the kind you buy or build. You can build one with a Pringles can.

Babs, if you go wireless BE SURE YOU FIREWALL!!!!!!!!!

if you don't, ANYONE can pull up in front of your house and hack into any computer on the wireless network.  i would SERIOUSLY consider hiring someone to install and secure your wireless network.  as for routers, i use the linksys as well.  the only problem is that about once a year you may have to reset it all.  it has only happened once to me, but i have a friend who has to reset just about every year.  if you have more questions, you can PM me.

Actually, even if you have great DSL, is is slower than the slowest 802.11x router..

(Five meg per second vs 11 mbs 802.11b)

Your speed will be less..  LMAO

Lol, it isn't JUST a matter of using a firewall... they all come with a built in firewall everything is encrypted, and protected.......but,  like I said, most people NEVER reset their log/pass. Most come with a default one, that is the same for ALL models. Pretty easy.... I have many bits of myself open to the outside... come and try to get in. I dare you... but.. WHY BOTHER?!

But, to be perfectly honest... come on now... are ya so important that someone is going to bother "hacking" into your computer, sure it couuullld happen, but the chances? Pretty slim. I don't REALLY know what I am talking about, but I mean, but the most I ever do is leech a connection. Any concern about "hacking" is a little silly. Limit your range of your wireless connection, if you are so worried about someone leeching, by sitting in front of your house, etc etc.... I seriously doubt you need a "professional" to come and install for you... hell, maybe HE/She will be the one to "hack" you... and what will you do? Call them over everytime you need to have access to your router, to change settings, or open ports, etc? Do you guys even ever go INTO your router settings? How do you NOT?!

I have used every possible make, and they are all  "the same", but change with changes in technology...... The only time I have a problem with speed is from computer to computer, Which is easy for me, because, I have a couple huge hd's I zap things onto with firewire, and then bang onto the other comp, i am impatient. I don't like waiting.. Currently I am using this --->http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/2.RSLID?mco=52E85527&nplm=M8799LL%2FA  but, i still have several kicking around. The hubby took two with him to his posting, actually. And brought 3 computers with him to share with friends;)

I have 6 computers in my house, only ONE is connected directly to my modem, the rest are wireless,  I have omni-directional anteneas set up, and can access my network from the playground:) (Which is great, because i am ALWAYS there watching kids, and sitting typing to you guys:)

Ok, bye... and watch out for those scccarrrryyy hackers:) (like me.... boogie boogie;)

I think you might have more people stealing mail out of your mail box, then hacking onto your computers. But hey, it COULD happen......i've done it.. but then again, i don't like my neighbor, and he has a big bank account... so sue me. Ok, no... really... dont please.

Easiest way to secure a wireless connet is to use MAC authenacation, and a good WEP conde.  And like GILLY said, change the defult login/pass for acces to the router/modem.

If you alread have a DSL modem, just get a wireless router, no need to get another modem.
