You can't really hook it up to the computer directly - well with good results anyway, not the correct impedence (ohms).  Most computer cards are high Z inputs, most good mics need low z inputs.
I just use an ART MP pre-amp & run the mic (any mic will work, I use an Audio Technica 4033 studio mic) into it via the XLR and a 1/4" to 1/8" cord from the output of the pre-amp & plug into the mic input on the sound card.  The preamp allows for cleaner sound, you can adjust the gain to match - you still need to be careful, it could blow your card if you overdrive it.  If you are careful, you won't have any problems, i've got some pretty nice recordings from my set-up.

Take it to Radio Shack and get an adapter  that fits both the cable and the computer.

DADMONSON:

I don't know if you're into buying more equipment, but this is relatively cheap priced, and is perfect for recording onto your PC:

My "main out" from mixer goes into my "line in" on the computer, my headphone jack on the computer goes into "tape in" on the mixer... and I use my SM58 with it, all my volume and headphones and all go through the mixer this way. That way you have a Hi & Lo  EQ and a Gain for your mic as well.

I once had the adapter to connect my SM58 directly into my computer, but you get a certain amount of noise and IMO it's not as good of sound quality.

If you get a full function multi track program like Kristal or Mackie Tracktion (great program BTW) you don't even need an external mixer, everything is done in the computer - including eq'ing, effects, compression, etc....The 2 subs I submitted were done on the computer only, my mic set-up into the sound card & dropping the music to a track via the internal cd rom drive.

Yeah, but Lonnie I'm a bit lazy when it comes to mixing.    :D

With a mixer set right, I only take my vocal track into edit view, normalize it and add a bit of reverb.... and I'm done. Maybe lessen the volume on the quiet breaks (non singing) a bit since you can usually hear a bit of hiss, and a bit of my music track there . Granted, my mixes are not perfect, but it's pretty easy. I can turn one of the EQ knobs a bit or adjust the gain according to how loud I'm having to sing on the given song, and what key it's in... and I really don't have to fool with it after the singing is done.

But... not to knock down what you're saying, I'm sure most people do it the way you do. It's easy too having vocal volume, main volume, and headphone volume all at your fingertips on the mixer, rather than having to go into your volume settings on your PC soundcard.

Kristal I seemed to get a bit of lag once it was recorded, but it was all remedied by a quick snip of the wave & aligned it to the music.  Tracktion I didn't get any lag.  Man In The Box was done with Tracktion.
Have to edit my last statement about my 2 subs, War Pigs was actually done in my studio with a 24 channel console & ADAT recorders, I did try to record it through Kristal, but I didn't feel I did a good job on it so I scrapped it & subbed an older recording that still wasn't great, but was better than the newer version - my voice is gradually dying.
