Do you mean Linux?  It is free indeed but you don't get any support, plus you may end up buying new software to run with.

BTW, I used Linux in the early 90s out of curiosity.  I went to the swap meet and bought a Linux CD for $5.  After many hours of tweaking with XCONFIG and running the risk of frying my 13 in RGB monitor, I was able to bring up XWindows.  I had it running on an AMD 386 with only 4 MB of memory.  It was quite a sight to behold and was cool being able to create multiple windows.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a whole lot of applications that I could run with Linux.  I also didn't like having to load a device in order to read my floppy.  Although playing with Unix commands was fun in the beginning, I missed my PC games.  So off with Linux and back to Window$ 3.1.  I had dual boot but had to free up some space on my 128 MB HD.

Fast forward to 2006... Linux is now user friendly and easy to install.  FWIW, the company I work for has rewritten one of its systems and it's now running on Linux.  The main reason was that it is "cost effective".  We'll see...

JMO.

Honored Gents, I think we need a section here for computer karaoke, don't you?

...All questions and info related to computer based karaoke/DJ could go there.

...and then break it down Linux/Windows.....Wadda ya say?

Kind of related to open source. If you are considering LINUX, I would pay a few bucks and get Mac OS X. It's a derivative of BSD UNIX, which is an open source UNIX that's been around much longer than LINUX and in my opinion, much more stable and secure.

Mac OS X just is a better OS against Windows and has much easier interface and there are a few good Karaoke software available for it. I have used all of the in the past, Windows, Mac, variety of UNIX and LINUX and so far I like Mac OS the best and it's my main machine. Much less likely to get screwed up by infection etc.

Just a thought.

And for the record, BSD stands for "Berkley Software Distribution" and the original Unix was written at Berkley..
