Post subject:  what Karaoke Equipments need to hook up to Onkyo home theater sound system?

Hi All,

i'm new, and desperately needs help. I want a karaoke system for years, but until now i could afford it.  So please help:

We have Onkyo home theater speaker system at home.

receiver - AV receiver, HT-R410
subwoofer - SKW-150 (150W output)
speakers -SKF-150F, SKC-150C, SM-150S (Input power-100)
DVD player - standard

-----------------
Now, what other equipment do I have to buy to create a karaoke system?

1.  With a mixer alone (like the "esonic KM-110 PC / DVD / MP4 / Guitar / Karaoke Mixer "), I can convert my stand DVD player and hook up to the theater system?

OR

2.  Do I need a mixer AND a karaoke player (that can play karaoke disc)? then I can connect those 2 to my receiver?

OR

3. I just need a karaoke player, and connect it directly to the onkyo home theater system?

I also heard that the wattage output from the karaoke equipment has to be less than the input wattage of the speakers or the receiver to avoid blowing up the home theater sound sytem.  Can someone teach me something on that?

I just need something standard, and not fancy or powerful.  Please help.  Million thanks.

4: get a professioanl setup consisting  of  a powered mixer and set of Pro audio speakers as you onkyo is not designed to handle live vocals and will blow no matter the wattage of your mixer.

If this is just for home use, you just need to buy a CDG player and you're good to go. Also, a good number of newer DVD players will also play CDGs, so you may want to see if you can find one that does. They also make DVD karaoke disks that will play in any standard DVD player, in which case you don't need to buy anything but the discs.

But like everyone said, it isn't going to soudn GREAT because home theater speakers and not designed to handle live vocals. As long as you are not jacking up the volume, however, you are not going to hurt your system. Stick to reasonable volumes and avoid YELLING when you sing and you can use your home theater system for home karaoke just fine!!

LT, I was in your position about 8 months ago, trying to setup a karaoke system through Onkyo HT 6.1 system to keep my budget low... I finally gave up and go with pro audio setup and I couldn't be happier ever since. But this is quite subjective because some ppl is happy with simple setup while some like bring home a "near-to-club" sound quality system, while some like to bring home a "professional live concert" setup.

Speaker plays the most important part, followed by a mixer with "reverb" effect (I don't the the echo), and a clear-sounding mic. Make sure you good cable for connection because the "gain" is higher good cable. IMO, these are the basic elements for me.

Most consumer level speaker like those Onkyo all-in-one setup have a "smile" EQ curve, meaning that the mid (vocal part) is suppressed and treble and bass are exagurated. The vocal part sounds inconsistent, sometime you can hear it clear sometime you don't. Based on my experience you will end up "shouting" more than singing. Besides, these speakers don't have protection circuit built-in so it can be damaged by the "feedback"... the list goes on... but my point is a good speaker is extremely important to achieve satisfactory "sounding" for karaoke. There are many elements involved to improve the sounding but it also cost more. I would begin with a "basic" pro audio setup, then upgrade when I have extra cash to burn  :)

But if you insist to use HT system, many friends of mine just bought karaoke DVD/CDG player, unpowered mixer and mics. But watch out for your speaker... Here is the answer if you prefer the HT setup:

1.  With a mixer alone (like the "esonic KM-110 PC / DVD / MP4 / Guitar / Karaoke Mixer "), I can convert my stand DVD player and hook up to the theater system?
Yes and No. If your karaoke disc is in DVD format then the answer is yes. But if they are in CDG format and your player doesn't support it then it is No.

OR

2.  Do I need a mixer AND a karaoke player (that can play karaoke disc)? then I can connect those 2 to my receiver?
For dvd player please see answer in #1. Whether you need a mixer or not please see #3 for answer. But if you decided to get one make sure you get unpowered mixer and hook up to the receiver. I tried that before, but I was not satisfied with the sound quality. It depends on your requirement.

OR

3. I just need a karaoke player, and connect it directly to the onkyo home theater system?
I tried that too and it will work. But I was not satisfied with the sound quality. If depends on you.

Just my opinion, hope it helps.
