Post subject:  A Maninblack milestone
Okay, you folks know that I'm still new to the biz and still get excited over the little things when it comes to shows and such. Last night I hit my first 50 song night.  
I started at 7 as usual, did my lounge/dinner set, took a break while folks were finishing up their dinner. From 8 o'clock on, it was song slip after another, to the point that at one time I had 20 in line to sing. So from 8 til 10:30 I went without break knockin'em out one right after the other. At 10:30 I finally had to take a short bathroom break. Now even when I take breaks, I still keep the songs playing and do what I call 'open mic' and folks were still coming up and singing during the breaks. At the end of the evening, I counted all of my slips and it came to right at 50. That's from 8 until 11:30. Not bad for a rookie. Now I have no idea of what you folks do on an average night, so please don't think that I'm trying to play 'beat the pros' but I thought it was pretty exciting.  
I made over 80 bucks in tips, most of which were surprisingly enough from the non-singers(go figure). I mean it was great, folks waving as they left, even coming up to the stand and shaking my hand telling me what a great time they had. The customers were happy, the waitstaff and bartenders were happy, the manager was happy, and hey, if they're happy, then I'm happy. Okay enough about me, just wanted to share what I thought was a very cool milestone for this ole boy.

When you are first starting out everything is an important milestone!

Sounds like you had a great time and made some decent tips to boot :oh yeah:

It's nights like this that keep you comin' back for more. Sounds like you made a good connection with your crowd, and they will be comin' back too. LOL

You got to love the run to the bathroom fun when your trying to
get back to the stage in time for the next song. It's like a drive-by-peeing. LMAO

Well I tend to make breaks a part of the show for everyone. I always break it down for them. That a sixteen measure instrumental break is a 'beer break', that means you've got time to wet your whistle and get ready for the next verse or whatever. Footnote: I always keep a table on the stage, I don't let them come up to sing with a beer in hand, or a cigarette. Not that I object to either, but just not around my equipment, or when there's a group of folks, and they're going to be huddled in close to the mics.
24 measures, means you've got just about enough time to go back to your own table and grab your beer and get your arse back up to the stage before the next verse.  
Now if it's songs like 'Riders on the Storm' you've got enough time during one break
(60 measures) to actually go to the bar and order a drink, but I don't recommend it,  
as the bar may be backed up.
The beginning of 'Free Bird', you've got a minute plus to go take a leak as long as there's not a line and you pee real quick. At the end of the vocal part of 'Free Bird' I always walk up cos folks will still be standing there when the guitar solo starts, I always tell them, 'your job here's done, you can clock out and go sit back down'.
It's funny because when I'm doing a song, I'll even announce 'beer break' when the measure is long enough, everyone in the audience will raise their glass in a toast, which is actually kinda cool. :D

Now if I can just get them to quit dancing in front of the dayumed monitor while people are trying to sing....LOL

Oh well if that's the least of my complaints, then life is good.

James,

Well done!  Congratulations!

I don't know what the average is but 50 songs for a 3 1/2 hour show sounds pretty good to me given that there can be quite a gap between songs when you're trying to get the next singer up and started.

Our duo does a  4 hour show and we're actually on-stage performing for 3 hours (3 one hour sets).  If things go well we do a lot of stuff between songs that involves interaction with the audience, funny bits, etc.   Our set list has 60 songs on it.  Even on those nights where we're doing song after song with little or no gaps in between we have never done 60 songs.

So, based on that criteria it sounds like you did a good job to get 50 songs in.

This sounds like it's turning into a really fun, regular gig.  I envy you.  If you decide to give it up let me know.  I could probably commute from Wisconsin for a gig like that!  LOL
