That's always tough, losing a 5 year gig.  Sorry that happened to you.

This is just a guess, but I think your "buddy" undercut you.   Happened to me a few years ago.    He ended up killing the crowd and then he walked out.   They have me back but the crowd is much smaller.   Once you kill a crowd they are all but covered with dirt.    Find a night very close by.   Give them a money break and see what happens.   Welcome to the real world of karaoke.    It's very cut throat.

First of all, I wouldn't play at a place that had two Karaoke nights with two KJ's.  Always told the bar owners it was bad business.  Especially if you broought a good crowd in, and they brought a few people in.  It isn't good common business sense to destroy the crowd you have.  Maybe the other guy charges less, but then  maybe he has less to offer.  What happens to that good crowd.  They come to sing on his night, then wonder when you will be back.  Then they have to call the bar to find out what night you are there.  Or maybe you left a calendar, but they lost it.  Or left it in the table, or-----
Regardless, me as the singer aren't going to patronize a Karaoke that I have to follow a shcedule for.
Two KJ's just don't work.

Good point...   You always have to watch your back.   I also don't share bars with other KJs for the same crappy system, reason.    Don't wan't my reputation ruined because someone thinks they are me.   If they only have one KJ, they only have one evaluation.   No confusion.

I am currently a customer at all of my haunts. One of them has a KJ that is trying to introduce his PC into that store as the hosting machine in addition to or instead of the disk loader.

I am a little concerned that he may not have all licensed songs on his system. My clue is that I asked him how many of his own songs were on the PC and he didn't know, but he used that same one in another bar before.

This bar owner may not need to be told about the issues that may be caused by using pirated karaoke. He does know some things where it comes to covering his own butt.
