as a rule, not really. They have some timing issues on top of that... not as a "whole", but generally, most of us "pro" kjs avoid them like the plague.
Some are okay., though. VERY hit and mss.
Avoid the Weird Al (#24) and the Cher discs!! Holy Gawd!

They are kind of like singing over a Zamphere Pan flute album

These are bad! I bought them just for home use, and would not even use them for that! I do like the Dangerous collection though, and am going to purchase the supercore collection I think.

Can't stand them, they are mostly midi synthisized & often very edited for length.

I bought one disc and only bought it for one song, Journey - Remember Me.
I quit trying to sing that song as it isn't anything close to the only recorded version out on cd, the Armegedden soundtrck. Considering redoing it myself using my Karaoke producing software.

I only have one SGB disc and bought it for one song I couldn't find it anywhere else and it was cheap. It's not horrible but certainly it's not good compared to other discs I have. My suggestion is unless you can't find the song anywhere else, get it. Otherwise, buy something else.

Thanks for the heads up on these disc. I was very tempted to purchase the package deal offered by KaraokeExpress, but upon reading the comments here, have since decided against it. Thanks for saving me the bucks that can now go towards something else more worth while.

If you can get ahold of disc 4 of the SQB get it as it has a great version of waarpigs and paranoid that is one track together.

I found the SGB disc you were referring to at ExpressKaraoke for 99 cents, they had quite a few at that same price including the Alice Cooper.. but even at that price, from the comments here, I'm still not sure if it's worth the effort, considering that getting that one disc would still cost me 5 bucks in shipping and handling.

$5.99 is worth gettiing specific discs out of their selections. Get number four you won't regret that one.

of the ones I have, I recommend these discs for the price:
12 (south park / comedy) isn't too bad,
14 (classic rock/ older heavy metal) isn't too bad,
20 (Eric Clapton) is ok (haven't heard ALL of them, but a few tracks have been played at my shows),
25 (Classic rock)(same as #20's description),
26 (classic rock stuff / 80s ) is okay (same as above), but I hate the song "Suite Madam Blue" (the version is hacked to hell)
27 (blues / 60s / 70s ) is okay, heard a few of them.
31 (80s/ 90s rock) isn't bad
32 (70s-90s pop/rock) isn't bad
34 (80s pop) actually has some really good songs on there! The versions are pretty good!
35 (70s disco) isn't bad, pretty good stuff
44 (70s pop/rock) aint bad, had some success with those songs
48 (hard rock disc) is surprisingly good.
51 (50s-70s pop/rock n roll) is pretty good
52 (70s rock) is pretty good
53 (today's rock) is really good, comparable to the Top Hits / Pop Hits Monthly collections... not saying I'd COMPLETELY replace my stuff with them, but they're pretty darned good!
66 (today's pop/rock) is yet another like #53!
Again, I'm specifcally saying, for the money, these are worth it, for a home user or even a pro. I'm glad I DO have the better versions of some of these, I'm just saying that in a pinch, these are okay, and there's no real timing issues or awful backgrounds.
Granted, the original SGB series is 1-66... and I'm targetting the ones I've got. By the time I bought these, I was getting them individually (on sale by the way! !)... so I can only give an opinion on the ones I DO have, not the others I don't.
Ones I do have:
1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 12, 14, 17, 18, 21-27, 29, 31, 32, 34, 45, 37, 41, 44, 48, 51-53, 66

I know the subject of SGB disc are a pretty much love/hate relationship here on this board. But I'm in fact gonna have to disagree with some of you on this, and I don't mean any disrespect by my comments.
I got the rock #4 and it's not bad at all. The one tune that I had high hopes for ended up being the biggest letdown. The Paranoid/Warpigs Live yeah the looped audience just didn't do it for me, in fact on my home system, the applause is so loud that you can barely hear the music without tweaking your speaker set up. But then again, I'm gonna hold final opinion til I'm able to put it on my club system.
I also got Alice Cooper disc, and I have to tell you folks, in my humble opinion, it fockinrocks.
I also one of the pop disc that had couple of Alanis Morissette tunes on it, and it also was pretty darn good. So I'm not dissapointed at all, and honestly think I got a heck of a bargain for the disc especially since they only cost 99 cents each.
Now I'm smart enough to know that there's no way they can compare to Sound Choice, but I think for the up and coming person starting out in the biz, they're not a bad investment, or at least for the ones that I've heard, and just like all the other series, I believe that you're gonna have hits and misses no matter what you buy.
Just my opinion,
James

I've took a few of the good musical tracks from this useless collection and redid the graphic files so the timing was finally correct and kept them this way as for the rest I literally threw them in the garbage. I got them free with a player I purchased.

Well your are correct that they aren't anywhere even remotely close to Sound Choice quality, but I also think that someone starting out, it could be shooting themselves in the foot as well. Many singers nowdays do know the difference & if they are going to have a choice between a show that uses SGB as their core or Sound Choice as their core, I would be willing to bet that most would go to the SC show - at least I know I would.
If the music sucks to me, why would I even bother trying to sing it. Now host/rotation fairness/club itself may also contribute to the decision factor, but if it was based on disc quality alone, I would never attend a show using SGB discs.
I had a guy give me #65, it's terrible. Godsmack Greed doesn't sound anything like the song at all.
Too many beginner companies cut corners just to get in, start off with quality to start with - it may be a more intitial upstart cost, but will benefit them in the long run & actually save them money because they won't need to upgrade/replace once they find out they should have got the other stuff first. Even you stated something in another post
" but I have to agree with most on this post, that you may want to save your pennies and invest in something with a bit more quality. I mean there is truth that you get what you pay for, and considering that it only cost me 60 bucks for 356 tunes, it's a heck of a deal price wisewise, but in the near future, I can only see these disc as being fillers until I can afford something better to replace them with"
Granted this was a comment about the Supercore, but even that one blows the SGB series away.

Soundchoice IS the highest quality out there. There is no argument out there on that. But dont be so quick to compleley trash SGB. SGB has MANY song titles and versions that are SIMPLY NOT AVAILABLE on other lables. For isntance theres a BUDDY MILES version of Purple Haze which is the FUNKIEST thing I've ever heard and really wakes people up when they hear it. And on the CHICAGO BLUES cd--#27 theres a song HAVE YOU EVER LOVED A WOMAN that has about the deepest blues tune your going to find. I've sung the SC version of Zuit Suit Riot and the SGB version and MUCH PREFER the SGB version as its grittier and has a more earthy sound to it. Plus the Lynyrd Skynrd CD has several titles on it taht Ive done seraches on and dont find them anywehre else. So does SGB have some turkeys on it--of course. But for me it holds a number of hidden gems and lots of really good obscure tracks that you simply cant find anywhere eles. And to my ears it doensnt sound terrible. Havne come across a stuation where the sequencing was out of whack either. So to me they are a good value and serve a useful purpose in the collection. And when you can now find them for only 99 cents each, well its a no brainer---get em. Just dont get the WEIRD AL DISC-that one is simply annoying--although I have had people sing from it before.
If you want to go listen to a SGB recording go listen to my sub this morning on SS
Gershwin's "SUMMERTIME" set to a swing Be-bop beat. A complete departure from the original or pioneer version of the song. A happy jumpy rythem which lends itslef very nicely to some improvisation and stylistc interpretations and it has a wonderful upright walkin bass line underlining it. And the piano work is excelelnt. from SGB disc #1. NOBODY ELSE PRODUCES THIS PARTICULAR VERSION.

Of course they have songs that would be fine to fill holes, but not to make a core set from it.

i do not pretend to be an audiophile, so they sound okay to me (not great...okay). we have a handful for home use and we got 'em cheap.
aside from the sound, the graphics are horrid and unless you are obviously just starting out with a teeny tiny show in a teeny tiny club, the image they project to the audience is pretty amateurish.
i will not get rid of mine any time soon, and i even take them to clubs sometimes if i am jonesing to do a particular song, but they are not to be taken seriously as commercial quality.
