i know lots of posts have touched on the subject of "do you sing for this reason or that reason" and who would you most like to meet" etc, but how about a question that is broader.
i go mainly because i work there.  after being out of kjing for awhile i started to miss it, though, so i went to the karaoke bar about once a month.  just because i like to sing!
now-
Why do you go to a karaoke bar?  answer in your own words obviously, but i expect to get answers like.......
it's inexpensive entertainment.
i have a huge crush on the kj
i'm trying to get discovered
the bartender is cute
i get bored
i want to laugh at people
i just love to sing
they've got a clean bathroom
my signifigant other works there
i work there
i accidentally go every saturday

did i miss any?

Mostly I started going to karaoke because they started having it once a month or so at the bar I go to all of the time.  Prior to that I had no experience with karaoke at all.

I have to admit it's been quite a boost to my ego.  While I won't claim to be the greatest vocalist in the world, I can carry a tune and I've been singing for my supper for more than half my life.  Most of the other singers at the bar are of the "liquid courage" variety and there tends to be a lot of yelling and screaming into the mic.  So the KJ likes it when I put in a slip; he knows that when I come up it will be at the very least a good approximation of singing.

Gradually I've gotten used to it and I enjoy doing it from time to time.

Larry

Hmmmmmmmm........

Since "cause I just love to sing" is such an obvious and boring answer, I'll just use my imagination for ya. That'll make it more interesting anyhow.  :D

*I'm in love with my KJ. (no, I'm really not, his fiance is a friend of mine)

*The bartender there is cute. (Actually, he is, and I do flirt shamelessly at times, but he's barely 21, and not much bigger than me..... that just wont do. And I'd feel like a cradle robber if I really liked him)

*I'm an alchy. And nobody looks at me funny for getting drunk there, cause everyone else is too. So, drink all I want, forget my worries, and nobody sees any suspicions in it. (just kidding, being an alchy to me.... is like.... 4-6 beers or a few mixed drinks.... that's a lightweight, not an alcoholic)

Actually, I'll level with you. My boyfriend of a couple years is often there. And I go there alot hoping to see him. He doesn't come up and talk to me, nobody knows he's my boyfriend, we act like strangers in public really.  It's just...... one of those things. If I see him, we just make eye contact, and we meet later out by his truck or in the restaraunt or something. Bad, bad, Charmin.  But what can I say, I'm hooked. If it wasn't for him, I'd never go out. I mean, who needs karaoke?

Alex is darn cute isn't he.  But I refuse to let it go any further.   LOL   You're an alchy?  That's why I go there too.  Nobody looks at you funny.   LOL   No seriously now, it's a very friendly place, it's a chance to hear a few good, mainly female singers (if they'll just come out more regularly) and I get a chance to practice what few social skill I still have left.  Charmin is one of the select Denny's Divas.  LOL

Okay, perhaps, just this once........ I can be a bit more serious.

I go for the singing, pure and simple. You wont catch me in a bar-ever- if it's not karaoke night. My passion for getting up there and singing my heart out keeps me going back.

I do have friends there, of course, and the whole comraderie thing of singing with your pals, and socializing... is alot of fun. But, it's mainly just.... cause I want to sing...... for a crowd. It's certainly not the same at home. You don't get that rush from applause and compliments..... and heck, nobody takes my order here at home either, when I'm hungry or need a new drink.  :D

To work with a CAVS JB jukebox and try to learn how to sing.  Become a better musician,  learn a new instrument, one I inherited, and have had a long time, but could never play  (voice),  You'll be pleased to know, I flunked. Voice isn't like guitar, bass, keyboards, woodwinds, etc.    Maybe I just have a bad instrument   :(  Mine's a lemon..

Who know's,  maybe I was just blessed with a voice timbre suitable for singing "Gay liturgical Samba's"  or some cutting edge style in a universe that doesn't exist.

Kap,

I heard there's a burgeoning demand for Gay Liturgical Samba's.  You're about to be a star, man.  And we can all say, "We knew him when."  It may be awhile though before Sound Choice starts releasing their Gay Liturgical Samba line so you'll probably be stuck with the more mundane fare when you go to karaoke night.

I started going to Karaoke because I love to sing (my Mom said I was trying to sing before I could talk :) ) But I started KJing where I'm at because it's one of the few places that doesn't put rules on what can be sung. Where I KJ at, anything goes, and I like that kind of atmosphere. I wouldn't want someone telling me I couldn't sing something I wanted to sing, and I don't want that done to my singers either.

I want to be a rock star one day. Maybe I just hope a talent scout will walk in and I get "discovered". But realistically, I love drinking and mixing that with singing...gotta love it. A lot of my friends are also regulars at karaoke bars, so it's what we do for fun. I can't stand nightclubs anymore. I love the atmosphere of a karaoke pub.
And I really do want to be a rock star.  :swg:

I wanted to become a rock star too.  Until I got a taste of the inside life, got to know a few known musicians, and for some reason opted to have a nervous breakdown instead of going the additional distance.  Sometimes the wait in line is the most exciting part of the amusement park. Once you get on the roller-coaster you just end up vomiting.  It's sort've an elusive term anyway "star".  Most don't have constitutions, and personalities that are happy sitting in the rocket taveling that far into space.

That's another horror story I can add to the list. I hear the business is not all it's cracked up to be often enough. But with karaoke, I get that rock star feeling for a few minutes anyway. :)

I'm a multiinstrumentalist,  but that's what I like about Karaoke too.  Until I listen to the results,  for a short time,  I think I sound good !    LOL

Actually the story about losing your master tape is nighmarish enough.  You've managed to get some recognition up there.  Or so it seems.

Thanks :) I do what I can. I've been happy with what I've been able to accomplish so far. As for the master tape, it all worked itself out. I was REALLY young when that happened, and didn't know what I was doing at all.

Well,  How's the CD sales doing ?

You have the drive, and energy to market yourself.  Apparently have for some time..  Someone will come along.   We just never know when.  Have you put a band together yet ?

I'm another one, Kap.  I used to be a frustrated rock star wannabe.  Finally I got over thinking I was going to be the next Beatles and started relaxing.  Over the years I've discovered that I like the intimate atmosphere of playing small clubs.  You get to see and meet people up close and you can respond to them individually.  It's hard to do that when you're playing a concert for 40,000 people and all they can really see of you is what is broadcast on the big screen at either side of the stage.  I think the other thing is that there is so much that's not real about being a star.

I think one of the best films I ever saw about that was "The Rose" with Bette Midler.  When you are a star there are so many hangers on and people telling you how great and important you are that you tend to lose any kind of perspective.  Lets' face it, our world would be much poorer without all of the great music that has been composed and performed but if we didn't have rock stars, baseball stars, football stars, etc. would we truly be worse off?  I don't think so because I believe that we would still have the local "Joe's" like us who would probably be better off musically if they were challenged to create their own art.

So, I'm never going to be the next Beatles, so what?  I do what I am capable of doing and as long as there are some people who enjoy that and somebody is willing to pay me to do it I'll keep right on.  I may keep on even if they aren't willing to pay me.

Larry

I have always loved to sing but was intimidated to sing in front of my parents. Karaoke was the safe place after giving up on being a rock star. Not to recomend that anyone should ever give up on being a rock star, I just didn't have the talent or the drive. I also didn't have the emotional stability it takes to tour.

The problem with singing for my parents arises because my dad has a deep, rich, true bass voice. My mom had the most beautifaul mezo soprano voice I've ever heard in my life with a vibrato that could melt the most tense of anxiety attacks. She used to get roles in theaters just because of her voice. In community theater she was always cast as the lead female long before casting even began.

My dad can pick up any instrument and if he's never played it before, he will be playing a tune within minutes or even seconds. He and I went to a Ren Faire once and met a guy selling the drinking horns that can also play a note. There was one horn that supposedly had only 2 notes. My dad showed the guy a third note on that horn.

I didn't get half of their talent. So I just sing. I am the only one in my family who can't read music either. I mean sight read. Though I pride myself on sing notes that most guys I know can never get to even on an airplane, I was the bass section leader in the bootcapm choir. There were women in my choir. The choir director used to let me sing with all parts of the choir when we were practicing so I wouldn't lose any high notes in bootcamp. He also had me set the tone and volume for each section when they were being singled out for practice.
