Some use em some don't, but it is like buying insurance, you don't need it until you do.  Consider it CHEAP insurance.

Power conditioner is a wise investment. All it takes is the "right" power spike to wipe you out. I use a Furman unit.....spent around $100

You can also get one from an office supply store for cheaper.    Something like http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?lev ... ll&An=text

These aren't any worse than the cheaper 'pro' power supplies.  Anything with a surge protector is a good thing.

I played a Holiday Inn that had goofy power.     Sometimes my reverb unit would be on, but no reverb.   I asked the music store guy if a reverb unit could work intermittently.   He said no.   On or off, never intermittent.   I found out if you shut off the power and turn it back on the unit would work.    That brings us to the "If it sounds like an impossible thing that could never happen dealy, then it will absolutely happen to me."     He didn't believe me.      I have had many other never can happen things, happen.     He never doubts anything I tell him about me equipment problems, now.    I'm a constant learning experience.
