HANOI (Reuters) - In Vietnam, where karaoke is not only recreational but also business etiquette, failing to show your talent can cost you dearly.

Tien Phong (Pioneer) newspaper reported Wednesday that state oil monopoly Petrovietnam's financial arm PVFC ordered 21 officials to make "self-criticism" reports for not singing karaoke at a contract-signing ceremony near Hanoi Saturday.

At least eight department heads were facing suspension, said the newspaper, which also published a letter by the group of officials protesting the decision as unlawful.

"We all thought we had completed our company obligation and contributed to the success of the ceremony," the letter said. "We were only thinking of our family back in Hanoi, the kids and the wives waiting."

A company official said, "No one has been laid off yet but they have to criticize themselves for not participating in collective activities."

You have got to be kidding - geez do we really want to hear everyone
sing? Some people I know would probably lose their jobs if people heard them sing.  LMAO

A friend of the family travels overseas for business.   Japan.    Karaoke on every corner, in every bar.     He went into one and partook of the festivities.     He witnessed a large table of business types.   One was the big shot and the others were the underlings.    Each one was expected to get up and do the deed.   Glad I was never an executive type.    He sang a Frank song and the place went nuts.    The next day he was walking down the street and strangers were coming up to him bowing and saying "Sing, Sing".    He recieved a lot of respect from them.  It's a very big part of the culture.    Kinda like my karaokes.     LMAO

The former Prime Minister of Malaysia sing karaoke and he always sing HIS song, My Way. Most of the current cabinet members (Ministers) sing karaoke and most people who know them will know their favorite songs.

The Member of Parliament and the Member of The State Legislator from my area sing karaoke and are expected to sing in any function they attended if there is some form of entertainment.  Most of the top Govt  official that I know  can sing and will have to sing in those fictions that have karaoke.

Sound strange but its true.

I'm glad we live in a country were we can choose not to sing. I almost always sing but sometimes I get that feeling like I just want to sit this one out.

Hmm, I don't know about that. Maybe this country, due to the labor laws and such, we may have a choice not to do things. However, with office politics, I think we are still under pressure to partake in some activity or another at work. Whether it's off site, moral building activities, customer dinners or even boss' birthday party lunch. If don't start showing up for these things and show that  you are a team player, there goes your next promotion etc.

It's just a bit more subtle in this country.

When I was still in the Navy, we called these the "Mandatory Fun Functions"...you caould have the day off work to go to the mandatory fun, but if you didn't you had to work!

You hit the nail on the head! Now I'm understanding this more. In our
country it's GOLF! I had to learn to play better for business functions.
A lot of business deals are made on the golf course. I resented the fact
I was being left out of things because I didn't play. Had to learn to play
or be left behind. I do enjoy it though.  LOL

Thanks for the tips guys. My dad has to go to Vietnam on Monday and I warned him that he might want to sing so he can be treated well.
