Hi all.

I'm new here and have just posted an intro. in the newbie section.

I'm after some help.....

I'm a KJ but have a limited vocal range due to my LOW voice. The songs I can sing are not appropriate for every gig.

Some of the songs I sing are: In The Ghetto, Good Luck Charm, Young and Beautiful, Can't Help Falling In Love, I Love You Because, True Love Ways, Feels So Right, He'll Have To Go, I Get a Kick Out of You.

Could people suggest some songs I may be able to master?

Pick any good female songs, but sing it an octave lower.

Hi and thanks for the suggestion. I'm a little reluctant to sing female songs as I don't like it when people sing "Andy" instead of "Mandy" or replace he with she, him with her etc. It's especially ineffective if there are backing vocals singing he and you're singing she.

Non-the-less if anyone can think of songs that may work shout 'em out and I'll give them a go.

You've got some real snoozers there CJ.  From that list I'm gonna assume that you're an older guy.  I'd say dig into that Johnny Cash stuff like one piece at a time (not a lot of singing, but a good, FUN tune) A Boy named Sue (also not a lot of singing) or maybe some Tennessee Ernie Ford like 16 tons.

The Oak ridge boys have some good stuff for low singers, and maybe you can even get someone to duet up with you on songs like ELVIRA!  You can also try Chantilly lace by the big bopper, another good time song that is low.  Elvis has tons of stuff that is low but is more upbeat than in the ghetto.  That way you can showcase your basso voice without putting the crowd to sleep!

Good luck, and just keep looking!

I would think Bill Medley songs would be right in your area of singing range. I think Van Morrison and Joe Cocker would be too. How about Lou Rawl?  Lou Reed and Louis Armstrong are two other Lous you can sing I am sure. Barry White? Neil Diamond?

If you need song titles, I would be more than happy to list them but the singers would be enough I thought.

Barry White, and end all  his songs with a 5-1 (Plagal cadence) using the words "Blue Moon"

(Chicks dig it)

WOW!

Thank you for all the suggestions, they'll keep me busy for a while!!! I'll let you know how I get on with them.

Big Mike, you hit the nail on the head - they are SNOOZERS and I'm really bored of singing some of them now!

I'm not sure if you are into the standards, but just about anything Bing Crosby did HAD to be in a low register--this covers a HUGE amount of territory.  You are very lucky to have such a range--baritones are not all that common.  I myself am stuck in a baritone-tenor range so hitting really low notes and high notes drives me nuts.  Good luck and welcome aboard!  Michael

Yeah when I first start off the evening, I tend to use some of lower key songs to get warmed up with and then later move on later to the higher stuff.
Now keep in mind, the first part of my show is basically for the dinner crowd since it's at a resort/marina, so some of my choices may come off a bit lame for some of the more seasoned vets here.
But some of my choices are:
Doors-Riders on the Storm
Santana-Black Magic Woman
Bob Dylan-Knockin on Heavens Door
CCR-Suzy Q
John Lennon-Imagine(been getting killer response to this one)
Bob Segar-Turn the Page

just a few that I sing like I said during the dinner crowd, while I'm waiting for them to finish their meal and get a few drinks in them, then I turn it over to the crowd.
But this way, they get a chance to sit back and enjoy their meal without the music drowning out the dinner conversation.
And there's not been a weekend that I haven't gotten a tipped request for me to sing a tune for them.
Heck I even get the kids out of the audience to come up on stage and sing with me. I mean we'll do silly songs like Old Mac Donald and the Hokey Pokey, and while my friends often laugh at this, the folks really appreciate the attention that I give, and I have one family that leaves a 20 every Friday night because I do this. So it's just my way of making my show a family affair where everyone gets a chance to come up to the mic.

Yeah, that would be kinda weird if you were singing one thing and the Mysterious Voices from the Great Beyond (that's my nickname for prerecorded background vocals) were singing something else!   LOL

I'm a bit confused.  Is your problem finding songs in a key that a baritone can sing or do you have a limited range (the number of notes from the lowest note you can sing to the highest)?

If key is your problem you can solve that by changing the key of the song you want to sing.

I agree, Johnny Cash stuff is good for anyone who has a limited range.  Plus there are other country performers, mostly the older ones, who sang songs without too much range to them.

There is also an old trick that you can use on some songs.  There are a few variables that control when you can do this but when you get to a high note that you have trouble singing, you can sometimes substitute a lower harmony note.  This doesn't always work so you have to experiment with it.

Larry

I'm a bit confused also but that's something I just have to live with lol.

My range is limited and low. I'll get the old keyboard out later then I'll be able to tell you more accurately. The suggestion of using a lower harmonic for higher notes I struggle with is a good one and one I sometimes use.

I do use the key-changer but on some songs it would make the backing vocals either too low or sound like the chipmonks. I don't usually like to go any more than two semi-tones in either direction.

Some of the song suggestions will not work as I am in the UK and although I LOVE country, not all of my audiences do. Oh, and Big Mike, I'm only 28 but just prefer the older tunes. (I'm often assumed to be 32+ even by people who know me).

Today is the first chance I've had to get the karaoke out since I posted my plea for help so I'll report back soon on my progress or lack of it. Thank you all once again.

Ok, I just got the keyboard out and my range is bottom D to middle E, I can sing the bottom C but not with any great power. With a warm-up I may be able to stretch to middle F.

Hi again.

As I mentioned earlier, I am from the UK and as such there are quite a few tunes that have been suggested that I either do not know or I do not have in my collection (I have aroud 3000 songs, all originals of course).

* Mustang Sally I have found to be too high or too low whichever way I try it, not too low for me to reach but too low to be entertaining.
* I can't beleive I don't have Chantilly Lace in my collection! :-(
* I wish I had Every Rose Has It's Thorn, I play this one on guitar
* Sweet Caroline is a WINNER :-)
* I'm Too Sexy is a WINNER :-)
* Barry White - I need to learn some of his stuff
* Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire will work, need to learn more of his stuff
* Riders on the Storm is a WINNER :-)) , need to learn this and more of the Doors stuff
*Imagine is also a WINNER :-) when I take the key down 3
