hi there im hoping someone out there can help me out
what i want to do is run my karaoke from my laptop
i have no s-video socket at the back of my laptop
i have ordered a vga to s-video so that will come soon
i have to connect the vga to laptop then my scart lead to s-video into the s-video bit
but will this actually produce the graphics from laptop to tv
sorry to sound a bit dumb but havent done it this way before i have only used disks and as i have put me disks already on hard drive for me disco's i was hoping to do the same for my karaoke's

I'd personally recommend getting a video card that has s-video out.

far easier than trying to McGuiver a system! !

If it does work it may only support clone desktop (same thing on both screens) instead of extended desktop where you can set the tv for just the lyrics screen.

Between a new card, S-video composite cable, or cables with adaptor boxes...and other frustrations. Have you pondered a secondhand Laptop with an S-video out ?

This is why you plan on doing something with a computer, and then buy the right accessories for it, not the other way around.

For instance, I wouldn't get a "media center" pc if I wanted to use it for heavy "drafting" applications.

Depending on a system someone wants XP Bargains runs some spectacular ads bird-dogging double coupons, and rebates for the customer. For $600 2 years ago I got a New 15 inch notebook (Celeron unfortuneately) but 30 gig HD 512 RAM, DVD drive, MM setup (Dell), Also got a standard desktop for under $400.  Only reason it wasn't over $900 (for the notebook), was because I took some time to find a means of buying it for less. People need not pay what they often pay for new systems direct from the company.

While $600 of course is alot more money than an S-Video composite cable, and Video Card, depending on capabilities of current system, labor fee *assuming the setup isn't easy* there's a tendency many have to pour good money into bad money when it comes to their computers.  Sometimes it's just time for a new system.

My point being, that if resourceful, a person can get a new and current system these days without paying 1K.  The higher cost of notebooks leads many to believe it's advantageous to pour money into them, upgrading them..Every few years (at least when computer technology was advancing at a faster rate a few years back) it was generally time to purchase a new system. Depending on cost of UG, vs what you can find new at sites such as XP Bargains... It's often best to buy a compatible  more current system new (or used)..

I have been using one of these for months.  Simple solution.  Never had a problem with it.  I have seen them cheaper at other retailers, but radioshack is always right around the corner...

I have a VGA to composite video converter. If anyone wants or need one. I upgraed all computers to ones with video out.

only problem with that frank is that the customers see what you're doing as a desktop...

Why I recommended getting the system you need VS trying to make what you have work is for a PRO show, it just doesn't look right, unless you have an A/B switch for the customer's viewpoint, so they don't SEE your player, desktop icons, etc.

Price for the new card is very close to what that converter does for ya, and it's all internal.

I have mine set up as extended desktop and customers can only see the picture on my desktop, not anything going on in the background.  I even made a banner for the last bar I was working at that was an announcement for drink specials and used that as my wallpaper , so if a CDG wasn't playing, that was showing.  Basically I set mine up so that only the CDG screen (lyrics) was sent to the customer screens. And while those were inactive(no CDG Playing) then it showed JUST the desktop photo.  No icons or anything.   Unless I am misunderstanding what ya'll mean...?

does your pc or laptop have the video card with extended desktop, or does that device allow you to do it?

Not sure.  All I know is that Windows XP recognizes it when it is hooked up and offers the extended desktop option under the display properties.  It doesn't give the option when the device is not plugged into my laptop.

gotcha... then it would be a perfectly acceptable device for any or pc running XP. Unsure if 2000pro would see it.

That certainly cuts down on the thought processes on what to do with computerized karaoke.
