Does anyone have an idea as to how many actual professional singers belong to this forum? I just figured out how to upload my first song. I found myself hesitant in doing so because some of the singers listed sing so well that if they are not professional they should be. I'd like help with my singing but I don't want to be compared with some of them.

I'm answering this because what you are getting at is why I joined this forum to begin with.. "This many amazing singers are all in one place ??" (was the question I too had), or, "It's the internet, why aren't there more hacks that suck relative to talent I hear"? (I couldn't figure out why the proportion of "Pro-ability" singers was as high as it was here)
Your Elvis song was excellent E.J. I went and commented. When you ask this question I wonder if your question is actual Pro vs Pro ability in terms of talent.
Or
1)"How many professional singer's belong ?"
compared to
2)"How many that submit here easily have the vocal talent/ability (assuming life situations were different) to be "Pro's" in the industry ?, or how many aren't "Pro" in the industry because they are any less talented than "the pros" we hear ?
The answer to the first question is tough to know. Many that submit here wouldn't identify themselves as "pros" for obvious reasons. It opens them up to alot of scrutiny by those that don't understand "Pro" doesn't necessarily mean "Vocal Timbre" both you and I would agree is conventionally tasteful.. Assuming a person identifies themselves as "Pro" on the internet, would that necessarily mean it's true ? (still another factor).. These are anonymous screennames in here.. Who's actually whom ? Tough to know. Yet it's likely few (if any at all) would be the likes of voices we've heard on top FM radio stations in the past, or someone in here was ever as big as JT, Pavarotti, or is actually Vince Gill incognito.. Just VERY unlikely they'd want to do this assuming that were the case.
As to how many Amateur vocalists in here have worked, and done gigs with bands ?
Some locally, some better known ? Not sure. I too would like to know just out've curiousity. In any field of amateur artists. Given the sheer number of them, MANY will outperform the "Pro's".. Yet it's always nice to remember that "the pros" are often the prototype others are trying to emulate, while perhaps not the greatest singers in the world, they might be great composers or innovators, or their brother might own a radio station, and push their demo thru programming... So they must be credited with that fact....They've networked to get their butt into the industry, or were discovered by someone who's biased... They'd need to be... It's all subjective as to "What's good"
MOST that submit in Singer's Showcase are VERY capable of actually being "Pro singers" since pro can preclude "Great" or "good" in terms of musical ability..Many are "CONVENTIONALLY" very good. Yet remember, most of us that feel we aren't, won't make laughing stocks of ourselves in a worldwide venue... Anyone with computer access anyplace in the world can read and post here and submit songs... Theres ALOT of talent in the world, so the percentage submitting to SS that are good, really isn't mere coincidence in lieu of the fact that it's a BIG world with many that can sing, and this is a very visible board for those that sing and aren't "Pro".. VERY few ever can make it "Pro", it's not just talent, it's who knows you, your personality, esteem, emotional stability, lifestyle, and often "How you look on stage" unfortuneately... Also whether or not you aren't afraid of performing in front of live large crowds...There've always been MORE talented amateurs than what many believe to be as talented professionals (in terms of what many of us find "Conventionally talented" or tasteful performers or artists in any realm of the art world).
My answer to your question, is that the ratio of actual talented Singer's in the Showcase excedes a ratio of talented singers you'll hear on most FM radio stations in terms of what most find conventionally talented. It's EXTREMELY high.. Many are very good or better (that submit in singers showcase).
So your observation isn't unique in-so-far that talent abounds in the showcase. It's QUITE prevalent in fact... ALOT of it ! "Pro" doesn't mean more talented. It's a life-style most normal folks WOULD NOT want LOL

If by pro you mean 'being paid to sing', then there are a few here. I don't mean KJ.
The last time I count was, at least 10.

That's a good point Jian. I sort've defined "famous", not Professional. A person that "makes money" doing something by definition is a professional. There are quite a few that have sung with local bands in here, Many have made their own recordings, or local recordings.. Yet they aren't ""famous or recognizeable names"... I was confusing Pro, with Pro's many would recognise in the industry if their actual names were heard (famous)
ADDED IN:
I guess this is just another indication as to why it's always good to have a general understanding of what a term such as "Pro" means, prior to discussing Pro's LOL.
Professional vs Industry known Professional. I was referring to the later.

Jian, I wonder how many in here are submitting the material of Pro's, and getting away with it LOL. Sort've like back in the days you wanted everyone to believe you were a "Badsinger", and were submitting tapes of me singing.

That's outstanding. I'm unemployed, I was hired to milk the camel, but the first day of work while looking for the udders, the thing squated on me. I wasn't qualified. Didn't realize it was a male.
Never lasted !
btw, Michael. You've obviously been singing for a long time. Mentioned you are now taking lessons. Do you find it really tough learning new things, and breaking old habits ? I tried taking a few refresher piano lesson's at 40. Just last year (at 49) some guitar lessons. I realized I've become so set in my ways, that learning (relearning in this particular case) is brutally difficult. In my particular case there's an obstinate tendency to want to defend the wrong way I became accustomed to doing certain things. IMO relearning when we're older is VERY difficult.
E.J.,
You might want to start a poll. Asking how many have made money singing professionally. How many would if they had the chance. etc

once again, i didn't bother to read the posts before me so pardon me if i repeat....
there are several singers here that sing in bands, sing at weddings, sing for local lyric operas and such. some are just D*&M good singers! i don't consider myself a professional, but i do sing in a band. there are lots of great singers in the world; it's too bad alot of the singers you hear on the radio suck!

As I said, I started singing karaoke not too long after joining this forum, and even then it took the KJ a month of weekends to get me out of my chair. I'd only sing if I could stay seated. A couple of months later, I was hooked. That's when I started asking you guy what equipment I need to buy. And thanks to all of you I'm really proud of the sound it puts out.
About a month ago I started singing at one of our local restaurants, the Pirate's Landing. A year ago I never dreamed I would be singing much less singing to an audience. I get paid monthly - so Monday I'll get my first check. Paid for something I love to do, doesn't get any better than this. I friend of mine said that she has watch me go through three different phases, I started out - singing at it, then I started singing, and now I'm becoming an entertainer. The singing is the easy part for me - being an entertainer is a different story. That's why a lot of singers in the 50 and 60s didn't make it, they could sing but not entertain.
I've seen a couple of singers that I thought couldn't sing that well put on shows that the audience loved, including yours truly.
I'd love to have the time and money to put on a karaoke singers benefit for some charity and be abe to select a lot of the singers form the singer's showcase. I bet it would really be a bash.

E.J. you know that's how things like that get started! someone wil say "we should..." or "i wish we could......" then about a year later it happens! i guess this is the beginning!

How do you rate if you are professional or not?
Interesting question.
I used to sing in a band and sing for church weddings. I never considered myself
a professional singer. Especially back then when my day job was working at Carmel
Corn as a cashier. hahhahah

Yea.... me too Babs.. I did a LOT of singing at weddings ... and occasionally sang with a band when I was in college and for a few years longer.... but I am NO professional. Got paid a few times to play my flute with a group.. on a song or two too.
Literally.. yes, a professional is someone paid to do something .... but .. hey.. I can think of a few things people are paid to do .... and I wouldn't call 'em pros. I think professional means TOP NOTCH ... skills, talents .. that are exceptional.

Thanks for asking Steve: Yes, it can be difficult changing your ways! I'm pretty lucky in that I always had a pretty good singing voice, but there are things I need a lot of work on, like modulation, getting some airflow in those low notes (my normal speaking voice is somewhere between a Munchkin and tinsel). I think the one thing that is always pointed out to me during my lessons is "Keep that jaw loose! Don't close up on the vowels!!!" I need to tone down the vibrato sometimes too. It's nice to have someone point these things out to you--you just don't realize it when you sing. Now, back to Camel #6 of the day.....Michael

I find, That some of the techniques I've gotten into muscle-memory from a young age (such is vibrato on string instruments), relearning hand positioning, posture, and just applying the mundane necessary things I never liked (such as two octave melodic minor scales, or practicing scales in general correctly and repetitiously) is brutal. I think in my case, learning new things when older isn't really a problem. Relearning something I've been doing since early childhood is VERY tough, I find myself fighting change. I think I'm afraid I'll regress. Not sure what the fear is.

This singing coach is--fortuitiously--pretty lax with the scales and all that jazz. He more or less just points out things to me that I'm doing wrong or could do differently. As a piano student from ages 7 to 24 I'm eternally grateful for the dearth of exercises I have to do. By the way Mr. Kaplan, do you ever sleep? Or are you like me, a refugee from the mortuary, doomed to perambulate upon this globe for All Eternity?

well, I was at one point opting for just plan "Kaplan", but that sounded a bit too militaristic....another choice with attractive possibilities would have been the ol' New Jerseyian "Kappy baby"...then "The Kapster" briefly flew by there for a moment. "Kapsey-Wapsey" was just a hint too disrespectful.

I've considered it LOL Yet I started to realize around 49, it won't be quite as easy as I thought it'd be (during the younger years) to use metaphysical ability to transcend death. I might succumb after I receive decent money for my musical toys. Likely the event will happen before the difficulties that accompany old age set in. Which will of course be before I marry, learn to play golf, Bingo, and the other tragedies a person can experience in life. I've taken a loan for the extension of my teen years, and fortuneately I haven't yet been asked to pay it back. Not sure I escaped from the mortuary or not, I never read anything in the Obit's indicating that to be the case, Yet I have a bumper sticker on the dodge dart next to my "Eisenhower" sticker that says "I survived the 1970's". So I suppose anything's possible
