Any of you people ever consider writing and producing your own tunes? I've been a drummer in a cover band for over 35 years, and it's fun, but I'm constantly thinking about what I could do and where my experimentation could take me. I enjoy singing karaoke with my friends at parties, and I have a collection of my own (well actually the wife's), but I'm more into the original scene.
Some of what we've done in online collaborations is ok, some bad, but every once in awhile we do something that shines! What a blast I tell ya! Anyone with a modern computer has a recording studio capable of making high quality digital cds/dvds.
I would think a group such as yourselves would have contemplated such a thing... Some of the best and most active people I collaborate with online came from the Karaoke groups.... It's not as hard as you might think to produce your own tracks. It's become part of my hobby to show people the ropes on this. Karaoke is great fun and good training! Yous should consider branching out and making some of your own ideas come to life! You can draw on what you've learned in singing karaoke!

Pretty much most of what I sub is "originals"---that is to say original lyric sets and vocal arrangments sung over intrumnentals taken from cd's I have--since I dont knwo how to write music and have never been in a band. Mostly blues and swing. An occaisional jazz composition.

Make sure you are not blocking pop-ups, cause a new window will appear.

I've acually recorded a couple of tunes on my computer with a live band and did the graphic files for karaoke songs not available. Dead Flowers by the stones for example. I'm the only kJ in town with that song and quite a few others because I recorded them myself.

I don't block popups. I run the exact same software that they are running for my collaboration site and we use prillian (the IM here), so I don't use popup blockers. No blocker, and still no sound. It seemed to be streaming but I couldn't hear anything. I just used winap to play a song soI know my sound is in good working order. That link just doesn't seem to work for me. Does it work for others?
I was on the Fully Modded phpBB board and this one is listed just above mine on the busy boards. That's how I found you all. I'm running the exact same software they use here except I'm doing it from home so I have lots of space for tracks. No popup blockers here.
ANy idea why that doesn't play?

F-jam ----- look to your left ... at the column under the Karaoke Scene logo. You'll see that under the Member Area ... is another section marked.. Karaoke Scene.
Under it ... three down ... are the words Singer's Showcase. Click on that.. and it will take you to the area where all singers submit their songs for sharing, critique.. etc. See if that works for you. If so... you can then do a search for Swing Cat's page ... and listen to his songs. Hope this works for you.

F-Jam, sounds really good.... Been there and done that. If it's not copyrighted and you put it on here, it's gone... Let me show you my.... new blues number...written 10 minutes ago.... if I send it to the copyright office with $35 bucks, right.... Now. Be careful. If you don't want it stolen. First one to get it to the copyright office owns it. Just a friendly warning.
If it's not copyrighted, I wouldn't post it anywhere, unless you don't care if it's stolen.

Well I have hundreds if not thousands of pieces, I've done as a hobby. I'm well aware of the copyright. Just haven't felt my work is up to that par yet. What I'm doing is kinda honing my skills. I've been playing the role of producer and working on other people's projects more than my own. Lerening to mic my kit, working on arrangements, learning to mix, and working on my performance skills. We have a group of solid musicians, and I think we are approaching the point where we could consider a commercial publication. Up to now it's only been serious hobby. As you see we've made some decent demos. Hopefully as thime goes on you should see better and better productions. Like for instance I never used to master my tracks and I'm pretty proficient at it now. I've been at it a long time and feel like I'm just now reaching that point.

Just about the time you say that, you'll hear one of yours on the radio... by someone else.

You make a good point. But I'm not too worried about it. I don't listen to the radio much. Thanks for your input.
For that fee you spoke of you can get multiple tunes or lyrics looked at.

I hate when that happens now-adays, as I hated it back in the 70's when Zep and Skynyrd ripped off two of my earlier songs, Free Bird, and Stairway to Heaven.. Still looking for the evidence I wrote those first... I've got it around here somplace, horrible thing this aging process, I can't recall what I did with my rough drafts... :drunk: Probably in a pile downstairs near the other songs I wrote even earlier.. Norwegian Wood, Helplessly Hoping, and Fire and Rain.. If I wasn't too lazy to dig thru my famous inventions, I'd look again now.. I thought I'd have plenty of room downstairs after selling that big metal golf tee to the French government on Ebay. They ended up sticking it in the ground in some courtyard in Paris upside down I should've known from their feedback profile it would've been smarter to sell it to Quebec City instead, or the Aboriginal people down in Australia, they have some nice golf courses nearby, and could use a large golf tee like that one. I have a Dutch auction closing this evening if anyones interested. The Brooklyn Bridge is going to the first 50 bidders, No reserve, low price, but I'll be honest, You'd best live close enough to pick this item up. I can't bother with the headaches of packaging and shipping these larger items. I just don't have enough styrofoam peanuts.

I agree, songs are snagged, changed just a tiny bit, and made a hit by someone else. You can protect yourself in lots of ways though.... per the copywrite office, the moment you put the words and/or music composition down on paper, and put your name and date on it- it is copywrit. Paying the fee and sending it in is just "registering" the copywrite. You can do this for the present: Put copies of all your lyric/music sheets and even a cd of the recordings in a mail package, and mail to yourself. (a secure one, that would be clear couldn't be tampered with) And don't open it, unless there comes a time you need to. USPostal stamping does count as legal evidence that the song was yours..... since, if stolen, your mail post date would be prior to that. And when you do go to register them with the copywrite office, mail a bunch together. Name the packet something like "F-Jams first 20 original songs"...... and then it's the $35 for the whole packet, not per each song. And...... go register with BMI. It doesn't take much to be accepted as a member there, and you can catalog your songs..... and people can pay you royalties through there if anyone ever wants to use one. Yeah, when I think about all that fame & fortune lost..... it really gets to me too.
But, Steven, we can't let our "fame" take over someone's thread... SHAME on us!!
We'll have to shine our own spotlights elsewhere. LMAO

Oh I don't mind if you direct the topic where you will. I'm just making small talk. I'm more into the originals, but I know what I'm into is strongly related to what karaoke is about, so I figured I'd come in and light a discussion fire.
We make our own backing tracks instead of using karaoke to write and sing over, but it's really close to what I've heard mentioned.
If I ever write a song I feel is strong enough to protect, believe me I will. It's an organization thing, on top of my doing it for the love of writing, performing, and producing. If I get organized I will indeed be doing the mass submissions to the copyright office. I've just stayed too busy with my craft to worry about it.
I've heard it said that millionares rarely start out with getting rich in mind. I've been letting my spirit guide me rather than to be motivated by the money. I do admit that I've thought about this though. Since it's a relase for me, I figure I'm already rich. Music is therapy for me, as is writing. I guess I've never been geared toward making money from my therapy. But I do acknowledge what has been said.
