Since the output signal has already been processed to a certain level of quality, if you hook up an external sound card will it improve the quality?   Let's say that the signal output (quality wise) is 90% of what it was originally.    Can it add or enhance signal that wasn't there, to make it 100%?    Is there a way to bypass the internal one and would there be a need to?

I assume you mean quality as compared to the existing sound card.

The digital data has to be converted to an analog signal (sound) by using a sound card.  Some sound cards do this better than others.  You can spend up to thousands of dollars on a sound card.  It all depends on how much you want to spend to get the quality you want.

Can the internal sound card be bypassed?

you should be able to turn off the internal sound card by going into the BIOS at bootup and looking for the switch there.  Refer to any manuals you may have or go to manufacturers website and see if they have a manual that shows you where in the BIOS to switch it off.  Good luck- tig

If you open Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, then click on the Audio tab, it will give you the option of making your external soundcard the default.

Usually when you connect the external sound card to the PC it will automatically bypass the internal sound card.
