I was trying to post this in the singers showcase fourm, but it as just not working for me, so i'll post this here.

Some of you are good singers, but you need to lower the reverb on your songs, it killed a few of the songs I listened to.

I hear this problem alot in the shows around here in upstate NY too..REVERB IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!

I've been at this awhile now, both as a sound man in live shows and Karaoke shows, and unless a song needs reverb(ie the orginal had it) DO NOT PUT IT IN!!!

The thing about reverb is that it will make you sound better, but you have to be able to mix it correctly for it to help, or else it does just sound like a cheesy echo.

The way you want to do it is slowly turn up the reverb until you audibly notice it then back off JUST below where you notice it is there. At that level, it will clean up some of your mistakes but the audience won't know you even have the reverb on...

Now if you don't make mistakes, then by all means, turn off the reverb, and tell that b*tch Celine Dion that I said hi.

I have customers that tell me to turn up the reverb before they even
start their song. This irritates me. Let me do my job.
If they have started and want me to turn it up I don't mind. For a rule of thumb- I never put reverb on a fast country song.

As for me it is hard to set my own settings when I'm singing. Maybe the trick is having someone do it for you.

I prefer a doubler with a hint of reverb, and a little delay. It cleans up most mistakes without sounding to obivous.

MY problem is my stinkin' recording program!!

I'll turn up the reverb to JUST enough...... and then when I convert to mp3 it's WAYY more than I wanted! *pout*

oh well.... I guess the reverb-haters will have to suck it up! haha!

I like what you said about those fast songs Babs. I prefer the fast ones to have as little reverb as possible. But I kinda think recording through a computer program can really distort a person's voice so the a bit of reverb helps smooth out the rough edges that you wouldn't hear if they were live, a capella, etc. Some songs just need a lot of reverb though... for instance, I think a song like "The Rose" by Bette Midler sounds good with it; "Because You Loved Me" sounds good with more reverb."

Any effect you should not be able to notice it but would be able to tell if it wasn't there  :D
For the ones that just want to swim in verb, I turn it up in their monitor only & leave the main mix in tact.  Another reason for a separate monitor mix.

I think many people are confused with reverb versus echo.....two different effects

I LOATHE KJ's that leave their echo/reverb/doubler settings fixed regardless of the song or singer.  I use to go to this one bar where they would have the echo turned up so much you sounded like you were singing the National Anthem in a football stadium.  Absolutely horrible when singing a fast song or a ballad.

Name me a song that is recorded without any efx on the vox. Even the best pro use some amount of efx.
