Post subject: | A question for KJ's |
Here is a question to anyone who is a KJ. How do you feel about people bringing in CDs with karaoke tracks on them. I go to this one place in town every once in awhile because I really like the atmosphere and the people, however the selection there is very limited. I was thinking of ordering a custom disc of some of my regular songs that this place doesnt have. Are KJs usually ok with people doing this or is it a KJ by KJ basis? Are what are the responses people who have tried to do this? Thanks for any help! |

Okay, I'll jump in.... From what I've seen the answer to this question is on a KJ by KJ basis.... As for us, we don't mind playing a customer's CDG as long as it is an original. Susie Full House Entertainment |

Susie Full House Entertainment OK, as a corollary to that, say I have songs that I've downloaded legally and burned to a CD I bring in? (I have several tracks like this) Would this be an issue for anybody here? |

I don't know why, but some KJs are actually offended. Songs on Cdgs can differ greatly, from key to words you must sing versus backing singing them for you....lots of differences that can throw you off. If you bring in yours, I don't have to look for it, and I know it's the style you're looking for. Bring your back up copy, I've had to learn the hard way, finding nice big scratches on my new cds, which I would bring in, because the KJ that had them all, couldn't seem to find this song.......jj |

I don't mind at all. I don't know why a KJ would mind. Especially if they didn't have that song. If you bring in your own disc and I don't have that song. It keeps you from bugging me to get it. |

Stay out of a little town in Kansas. This guy thinks it rude for anyone to bring in discs to his show...even if he don't have the song or can't even GET the song, ie discontinued or out of print disc. However he admits he brings his own discs into OTHER shows because they may not have the songs he sings. How two faced is that? I've never had a problem with customers discs as long as they were originals or from legitimate custom sites. Not big on burned discs & won't play those as you can't tell if they are legit or not. You may bring in your original. |

I love it when people bring in their own discs, for all the reasons already metioned. I just put their slip on top of the disc and when it's their turn to sing, I don't have to dig my copy out if I have it. If I don't have it, it adds variety to the show, and I don't have to buy it. However, there have been times when I went out and bought a disc specifically because someone brought it in and I liked what was on it. As far as burned copies go, that's not my concern. I just assume the tracks were bought on line, or he's protecting his originals. If I have no reason to believe that the disc is "pirated" then I'm acting in good faith and that should protect me legally. T-towntenor which small town in kansas was that? I live in Topeka and I've never encountered anything like that here. |

It's impossible for any KJ to have every song that someone wants to sing. I play it. Only problem I see is that people hand me discs that look like they were used to scrub the parking lot. I point out scratches and cracks to them. I will try to polish it for them. I'm not God, yet. More than likely the song will skip or won't even queue up. If it skips everybody thinks it's your disc. As far as being a copy or not.... If I paid $75 for a custom disc I wouldn't take the original to any other KJ. They are protecting their investment. Some of the KJs out there don't take care of their own discs let alone somebody elses. I have witnessed some of the abuse on singers personal discs, inflicted by other KJs. |

I think you still have the "old school" jock that is back in the day's when you didn't play another person's record, or tape because in those days you'd often get records that skipped, were scratched, dirty.....and later on we didn't play other's tapes because tapes in poor condition, with lousy rubber grommet's could badly mess up a tape deck, or a bad tape would snag in the tape deck and cause alot of probs... Although technology is different today, I suppose there are still those that trust their own equipment, keep their disc's in tip top shape, and although playback mech's aren't what they were (meaning another person's CD likely couldn't cause the same probs messed up vinyl, and tapes (or cartridges) caused), Some folks are a few years behind... Likely afraid that a scratched CD will dirty the needle in their CD player LOL , and mess their preener ! Might skip who know's Some of us think CD's are just small 45 rpm records that you put into your Bang and Olefsun turntable that your computer comes with |

(not really sure).. The 45 rpm to 33 rpm yellow plastic turntable spindle adaptor is too big for the hole in the little silver records; I can't play one on my turntable.. |

Singers - If your're going to bring in your own CDG's --NEVER A PROBLEM BUT Just make sure --You hand it to me in a sleeve or jewel case. PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS NOT DAMAGED - SCRATCHED - AND THE GRAPHICS LOOK FINE. I HATE IT WHEN I'M PLAYING A CUSTOMERS DISC AND IT SKIPS OR THE GRAPHICS ARE ALL GARBLED ON THE SCREEN Everyone looks at me like..WHAT THE HECK |

I don't play people's cd's it's too much of a pain. I run from a computer ant there is no good computer software that will play cd+g's in my notebooks. When I ran my show from cd's not an issue. |

No problems with customer discs here! I have about 5-6 regulars that bring their own discs. Most of them have burned the originals to a compilation disc so they dont have to carry their originals to the show. I do request that they provide a sleeve or jewel case to minimize damage. Normally when I go out to sing I take 3 compilation discs with me taken from about 15-20 original discs I own. So far I have encountered 2 KJ's in the local area that refuse to play them. I will attempt to find a decent version of the song in their book and sing that, but if I can't I generally head for the door and find another place to sing. |

I personally love it when a customer gives me a cdg. I'm computerized as well, but I have a secondary player strictly for mix music and I use it for the karaoke cdgs! |

T-towntenor which small town in kansas was that? I live in Topeka and I've never encountered anything like that here. Unfortunately it is my concern if it is a burned. The first reason is that my husband and I own a retail karaoke store. I have actually had people come in to my store, find a song and b**ch because they weren't going to spend $7.50 for a disc and the only song they REALLY liked on it was the song they were looking for in the first place! I have been told by two people since our store has been open that they'll just have their KJ burn the song for them!!! Good Heavens people!!! Okay, sorry, elevated blood pressure, must come down..... Calmly now.... However, we would not play burns before we opened the store. There is a KJ company out here that has saturated a well known national chain, none of his KJ's have any originals and never have.... This has been going on as long as we've been KJ'ing. There was also a KJ in town that would make "custom" discs for people off his music, the guy even placed a label on it that said something like "made for Jane Doe by ABC Karaoke". We have always played a customer's disc as long as it's an original but with so many people pirating, etc. we would have to know that you have the original to play your burn so it kind of defeats the reason why, legitimately, someone would take a burn to a show. We have only had one person walk out because we wouldn't play his burns... The funny thing is we had the song in our book! I've seen the posts of the KJ T-Towner is referring to, can't remember which Kansas town but for some reason Wichita comes to mind. Susie |

Susie No, it's actually about 80-90 miles west of Topeka & about 80 miles north of Wichita. |
