Hi,

I would like to record karaoke songs.  I play them on my PC.  I have a radio shack omnidirectional  mic (impedence 500).  

So far the only thing I have done is joined Ksolo which has a recorder that can be downloaded.  I did record a song, but there is no amplification on my mic through the computer.  I went into my volume area and mic is not muted, and volume is turned up on the mic.  Actually I am getting a very low amplification from my speakers (on my voice).  Is there a way to get good amplification through the computer??  I use winamp on the computer to play the songs, but plug the mic into an external player and get a good mic volume there.  

Do I need something else??  Should I be recording externally??  I am hoping for some suggestions, easiest way, also this is only for home use, just for fun, but want to try to sound as good as possible...to see if I can really sing LOL

Sounds like you're not using the advanced controls of your windows mixer.
open your mixer. go to options and open the drop down menu.
Under proerties there should be advanced options.
clicking on this will make your mixer add advnced options to the main volume and mike volume.
click the button under microphone.
click on the check box that says +20db gain.
this should increase the volume of the microphone.
other tweaks you can do is lower the wav volume with your mic volume left at max.

What Danny is suggesting should solve your problem.

You can find this in Settings / Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices

There are 2 tabs Voice and Audio

I tried doing all that, it does help a bit, but barely.  I think I would rather record off the computer.  Do you have any recommendations on a easy system (under $100.00 preferably)

Another alternative as I found this to be the case with the computer I record on, is to hook up a set of pc speakers and hooking head phones to it.  Made it easier to hear it. Believe it or not the actual vocals come out recorded to cd without any problem.

How does the wav. form look like in the recorded track? is it just one stright line or can you see some form of signal.?
When I record I do not need to hear myself from the headphone ,as long as the music can be heard.

What software do you use?

From little I know, here are some suggestions. I assume you are using the PC, not a Mac. If you are using a Mac, specially the older ones, you need a pre amp with the mic. If you are using PC or newer Mac, make sure you have the mic connected to the Mic input, not line input. Although either could work theoretically, I have seen some differences in input impedance that could make the input sound terrible or low.

Secondly, as others have suggested, using music software (can't make a recommendation here sorry on PC side) and see the wave of the vocal part. See if it has high signal or not. That should tell you if the voice has been recorded properly. If it looks good, it could be your output. Make sure your headphone is plugged in to headphone not audio out. Again, this may or may not make a difference.

If you find it's the mic in general, my suggestion is to bypass the analog and go digital. I have used Sansom USB mic and it works great and provides a pretty decent sound input. Here is one on sale at Ebay for about $70. That's one way to bypass sometimes unreliable analog mic input.

Just a though, perhaps you have the mic pluged into the LINE IN instead of the MIC IN on the sound card.  

Double check it.
