Each week they got a little smaller as it increased in price.   I look for it to happen again this year even worse.   I expect $3.50 a gallon.    No matter how high it gets, people still need to go to work, shop, pay utility bills, and rent.    Only one thing suffers,  THE FUN.  There will be no fun money.    Karaoke and going out is the fun I'm talking about.   Less eating & drinking out.    Get prepared for a dismal summer.

YEP!!!  Was also told by several of our regulars that was a DIRECT reason why they weren't coming out - they were going to places closer to home (no matter how crappy) or not going out at all.

Same here, we have folks that drive between 15-40 miles to come to our shows each week and they have opted for closer venues. Some still make the trek though.

I'm out've touch with people in the package store/liquor retail area's now-adays..

I'm curious if the law's putting a squeeze on bar buisness, as well as the economy over-all is boosting package store revenue.  People drink more at home more.. Avoiding DUI, excess travel cost, bar expenses (luxury costs) etc..  Local bagel shop's that rely on even a small coffee crowd are hurting here.. People are even traveling less to get things like a bagel, and coffee..

Yup, noticed it ... but it seemed to rebound as prices went down.  Haven't really felt the impact of the recent hike in prices YET .. but I'm sure we will.  What is more noticeable for us, is that we are MAKING less profit.....as a result of the gas prices.  What was costing us $30 in gas last year at this time ... is costing us closer to $65 this year for the same amount of gas/miles.  

We noticed a MUCH BIGGER DECREASE in attendance when the NO-SMOKING laws went into effect.

Here in the Northeast.... it impacts clubs and those of us who entertain in those clubs ... in a BIG way... during the winter.  It's tough to stand outside in below zero temps with the wind whipping!   Lots of singers have their own home Karaoke parties now.  And yes, Steve... I also think the DWI laws keep folks home, too.

[font=Comic Sans MS]As a singer I can tell you that the lack of money from my present divorce (financial rape with a touch of mental abuse) and the cost of gasoline has curtailed my ability to sing as much as I would like.  We have taken to going to the VFW exclusively on Fridays because the drinks a cheaper. Plus it's not a meat market.  Back to the subject.....the cost of everything is going up, the middle class is quickly becoming a thing of the past......

The "Haves" and "Have Not's" .......the "Haves" want us to stay home watch TV....believe everything they tell us....they would prefer that we quit drinking and smoking so we can remain productive drones......so this would effect Karaoke attendance.......the best way to keep us in our homes and not out having a good time is to raise the cost of everything so we can't afford to go out.......so it's not just gas......it's.....it's.....a conspiracy..... That's what I was mentioning earlier Cindy.  It's not just one thing that breaks the back of the bar business... Yet add raising drinking age, to DUI, to that add tougher law's in licensing, stricter zoning ordinances (in this area) extra hour license getting pulled, no 2-fer's allowed, periodic & arbitrary ATF raids, cop's staking out in bar parking lot's, and now smoking law's, and a depressed economy....

putting everything together it's tougher on the liquor retail establishments which rely on the customer "drinking" away from home

ABSOLUTELY.  Bar take is down also.  Smoking ban really hurt things at first (Wasington was the 10th state to introduce a total indoor smoking ban in public places) but it bounced back after 4 to 6 weeks.  Even the singers who smoke seem to like the no indoor smoking thing - and I know long term my equipment will too!  Ciggy smoke is hard on electronics.

Despite the internet rumor, Karaoke is not Japanese for "drunk buffoon with microphone."  However, "rotation," is Japanese for wait your damn turn!

I think Delaware was the first state late 2002, A few other Northeastern states followed suit shortly afterwards... The Indoor clean air act was semi tolerable before it was amended.  That's what got really ugly for some really small places of business.

I don't go on the other side of town for a venue, but unless I'm in the area at that time, I'll swing by.

I wonder if Bush said the war really is for oil and lowering gas prices and instead of hunting for WMDs, he might actually get good approval ratings.

My only Karaoke night crowds are bigger and more consistant. People are drinking in bars closer to home vs heading into town. Bar Sales are up 38% over last year.

Living in a highly populated Chicago suburb I don't think gas
prices will ever effect me.
There is talk of a smoking ban though. Now I'm afraid that would hurt.
It is so stupid. All that would do is drive business from one suburb to another.
I have 3 other suburbs literally 3 minutes away.

Smoking ban won't hurt you, it may for a few weeks, but it will bounce back.
