I have a Peavey mixer/amp with reverb and an Alesis Multimix 8fx mixer with built in effects.  I have 2 Shure SM58 mics running through the Peavey mixer/amp and my Cavs player running through the Alesis Multimix 8fx mixer.  I was hoping someone could tell me why my mics sound noticeably better running through the Peavey mixer/amp, yet my music sounds better running through the Alesis Mulitimix 8fx mixer.  There is a very noticeable difference when I try to run my music through the Peavey mixer/amp.  Lonman suggested that I run everything through my Peavey mixer/amp (thank you for your advice, Lonman), but I can't figure out why there is such a noticeable difference when I try to run my music through the Peavey mixer/amp.
Also, is it possible to use my Alesis mixer with built-in effects as an effects processor via the "send" and "return" inputs on my Peavey mixer/amp?  I want to coninue running my mics through the peavey mixer/amp and use the Alesis mixer only as an effects processor via the "send" and "return" inputs on my Peavey mixer/amp.  I'm not that knowledgeable concerning karaoke setups and terms, so I would really appreciate any questions if anthing in my last 2 paragraphs didn't make sense.  Also, this is for a home setup.   Thank you for taking the time to help us newbies.

Are you eq'ing on the Alesis & the Peavey?  It may be a matter of over eq'ing - which may 'sound' good, but could be overloading the Peavey inputs.
As far as using the Alesis for effects, this can't be done with the mics plugged into the Peavey.  The Alesis is a mixer & not an effects unit.  Run the mics into the Alesis as well as the music leaving the Peavey for an amp only & see how that goes.

Is it possible the effects are turned on on the channel you are connecting your player through. That's all I can think of. if you don't run effects(reverb) the sound of the player should sound as good as going though the alexis and coming out of the peavey. Had this issue with an old radio shack mixer. When I turned the effect off of the input my player was running through, it sounded cleaner.
This is just my opinion.

All amps and mixers are not created equally.    Sound is made up of a multitude of frequencies.    I use a 32 band EQ.   They make a 64 band and I don't know if the have bigger.     Some companies make lesser quality units.    They cheat to get good looking results on their product spec sheets.    A 500 watt amplifier may not truely be a 500 watt amp.    You need to find an amp that is going to amplify more than just the major frequencies.     The more individual frequencies it amplifies the better it is and the better it will sound.   So if X's amp does say 50 frequencies and y's does 150 which one do you want.     It's how many frequencies it amplifies to 500 watts that makes the difference.
