So I'm looking into backing up some old Promo Only DVDs that we use frequently at our shows, but I would also like to replace the PlexWriter Premium that I use to backup all of our karaoke CD+G discs.  Would anyone happen to know which DVD+-/RW models read the .cdg subcode when used with Microstudio?  I've looked at various websites for certain models, but I've been unable to find out which ones work for karaoke discs also.  Any information you have would be great.  Oh, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a Plextor drive.  Any 16x double-layer drive that you know of would be fine.  Thanks.

the plextor 716 works well, but the new 740 does not read the subcode.

I agree, I have the Plex 716 and it works with Microstudio

Thanks for the ideas.

Coincidentally, I was looking at the PX-740A on Best Buy's website, and in the product specs section, it says that it does support CD+G whereas some of the others didn't have that listed.  Do you think the 'a' on the end makes a difference?

if you don't mind paying a few extra dollars MTU's site has bench tested and certified burners

It's my understanding that plextor is going to be out of the cdg market soon

Rumour only. They are just going to only start making certain models that doesn't do CD+G.
I second the mtu part though.
740 is one of the ones that is supposed to not support CD+G, So I wuld be wary about it. Best buy may be stuck in the stone age where everything Plextor made was CD+G compatable.

WELL,
From personal experience, the 740 will work for reading a cdg But it will not write one. If you have a program that will do the software decoding. Previous plextors had hardware decoding. therefore they would also write them.

example: diskjuggler no longer will write to a 740. DIskjuggler in the past has been able to read cdg on about 90% of all drives.

cd's may become a thing of the past once the new blueray dvd's are on the market. kinda the way the 720 meg 3 1/2 floppy went.

Power CD+G Burner works on PX740 with no problems. It really does not make a big difference whether subcode processing is done by the software or the hardware.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone.  I did a little more research on the 740A, and found this from MTU's website:

These are known Plextor drives that DO NOT Support the CD+G format:
Plextor PX-740A- This drive is made by BenQ and marketed by Plextor.
Plextor PX-504A- This drive is made by Ricoh and marketed by Plextor.
Plextor PX-504UF- This drive is made by Ricoh and marketed by Plextor.
Plextor PX-230A
Plextor PX-208U
Plextor PX-S2410TU

Even though Best Buy's site does have several different models listed, some of them do not list CD+G support, like the 740A claimed.  I don't want to take any chances though, so I'm going with the PX-716A SW.
