In your opinion, what songs should be removed from every karaoke song book/disc world-wide?  There are some that when I see the song title on the screen, I just cringe.  Not because they are bad songs, but I have never heard them done well.  Ever.  How about a quick, informal poll on the most hated songs or the songs that you have heard done most often without hearing it done well.  (Don't get me wrong, I know that karaoke is for fun, but I have a lot more fun when doing a song that comes out well)

We do not censor our library.  The only time a song is not allowed is if the venue or special event says no to it.  If it's there and there are no restrictions then if you want to sing it you can regardless of length or talent.

A friend of mine was doing "At a Medium Pace" by Adam Sandler every week.  After about a month or so, it got old and people started to get offended.   If you haven't heard this song I'll let you know that it makes The Rodeo Song seem like a church hymn.  The bar owner finally said enough is enough.

Just for Fun though, If I had to BAN a song, it would have to be Picture by K. Rock and S. Crow.  That song is more worn out than bum's shopping cart.  Cringe, then cringe again.

My two nickels worth... :talk:

Banned world-wide? That's a bit harsh, isn't it?

We do not allow any suggestive lyrics or explicit lyrics before 11:00 p.m., but after that anything goes. There is a disclaimer to this effect in the book that explains that before 11 is family time and after 11 is bar time, so anyone offended should take note.

I personally have only personally taken one song out of my book. The worst, most unacceptable remake in the history of music that I literally can not handle hearing without pulling my hair out:

Madonna's remake of American Pie!!

Oh, and another karaoke remake to take out... "Sweet Home Alabama" by JEWEL...  (Play that one by mistake and you'll never do it again!)

I would have to agree on "Picture" being banned, GOD I HATE THAT SONG!  I even tried once, when reprinting books, to accidently leave it out, but the wifey cought me and made me put it back :madgo:

Wally:  "I don't want to go to Family time at the bar, there migh be a girl showing her midriff, or I might hear someone in a conversation say a nauty word."

Depends on the song - if it's a duet then it's not really taking any time if if counts as a turn for each singer.

My "family time" rule is actually backwards from what it sounds like. The problem it intends on remedying is those parents of the year who have their kids at the bar past 11:00 then (@$%&#!) and moan at me for exposing their kids to explicit rap music. This happens quite often, believe it or not. Instead of the old inevitable power struggle I'd get into where I literally played MORE explicit songs to try to chase the kids out past 11, I decided to just put the disclaimer into the book, conduct my normal show, and point to the disclaimer if anyone was offended once I started playing the uncencored dance mix at about 11ish.

So, the rule has nothing to do wiht PROMOTING family time, it has to do with DISCOURAGING family time after a reasonable hour.

Ban a song world wide - no

Dislike a song and ask it not to be sung - yes

Accidently leave a song out of the books (wink, wink) - priceless
LMAO

I have not been sensored by an owner, manager etc... But if I was and it was
for a good reason I wouldn't have a problem with it.

You all already said what I was thinking - cut the long songs - 4 minutes is enough.

Problem here is too many ways to look at it...

The good song/bad song is too subjective but I think a KJ's perogative (e.g. > 6 min)

Then there's the offensive factor... also alot of gray area but where do you draw the line?  I figure if you're in a BAR and all adults, pretty much anything goes.

Here's some food for thought--
Adam Sandler - Ode to my Car.  really funny but filled with cuss words.  deal or no deal?

AC/DC - Have a drink on me -  lots of drinking stuff, some brawling, but no cuss words I can think of of.  kill it?

Disturbed - The Sickness - really twisted song that has a rap that even I have trouble listening to in public-  cussing, child abuse, etc.

SAve a horse ride a cowboy--  ok, song basically about getting it on.  has a hook and lots of people love it but... kill it or keep it?

there's too much gray area beyond something that's just filled with cuss songs.

I'm sorry, I thought this was for fun...  Now If I had to be serious about banned songs, I would never leave a song out of my book...  dirty words I use the first letter of the word and then the ####.  Such as Letter to My P####.

If a barowner does not want a song played, I will not play it.  Other than that, It's up to me and I'll use my own judgement.  If I think it is an inappropriate time for a song, I will not allow it, but explain to the singer my reasons.  It's my reputation at stake, not his.

I guarantee that if a crowd finds a song offensive they will remember the KJ who let the person sing it before they remember the singer.

my two nickels worth...

There's alot of songs, old & new that can, could and are very suggestive.  I nor most my crowd has ever had a problem with that.  What I have a problem with are the songs that have come out that have the hard core words.  I know they are covered with @#%& and such but that still allows and encourages the singers to use the actuall words.  I don't have to worry about whether I should allow it or not because I have started editing ahead of time when those songs come in and I simply will not put them in my system.  As I had posted on another subjetc, I actually lost for a short time a great crowd because of those types of songs.  It is a free country.  And I choose to exercise my right not to have them.  As Walld2 said, "It's my reputation at stake; not the singers or club."
