LOS ANGELES -- The Parents Television Council, the nation's most influential advocacy organization protecting children against sex, violence and profanity in entertainment, filed an indecency complaint last Thursday with the FCC against the NBC network for airing Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s expletive after the Sunday, October 3 NASCAR race. (He said s**t :whistle: )

The PTC and its nearly one million members nationwide have asked the FCC to levy a Notice of Apparent Liability against each NBC affiliate that aired the program.

The program that contained the indecent material was broadcast live around 5 p.m. ET and was seen in homes across the country on NBC network affiliates.

"NBC knows that NASCAR has a huge family audience. NBC and its affiliates should be fined for airing the S-word at a time when millions of children were likely to be in the viewing audience," said L. Brent Bozell, president of the PTC.

If the worst thing that happens to a few minor's is they hear the word #$it this month, they are very lucky kids. As if the parents filing the suit never lost their temper's in front of their kids, and said or did worse things ?  Kid's never hear these expletives ?  They know they aren't "nice words" but when people lose their temper's they say them.... It's been that way, and it will stay that way... They know right from wrong....Just because a kid hears something, or see's something doesn't mean it leaves an indelible imprint in the mind, and the kid is engraved with that word in their head.... So what..... A person loses their temper, and the "Holier than thou parents" sue....meanwhile, when they work, the kids listen to Rap, and MTV, and hear much worse on TV and in music all around them...Quite honestly, I think a good portion of what the media broadcasts primetime is much harsher on younger minds than a live program having an expletive...Who gives a rat's patooty about an expletive.  Tney grow on tree's in everyones yards these days anyway....Never use an expletive but broadcast new's so the kid's ask  "Mommy, What did President Clinton do with the cigar ?  I don't understand?"...  That's better for young minds ?  The violence and homocides they hear about are better for them to hear about than an expletive ?   I don't follow what grounds they have for a suit ?  PG material slipped into G programming ?  TO BAD...  Very little on TV is "G" rated anyway anymore...

I agree Shyguy,  That's Bullcrap.....  Kid's are exposed to much worse all day.... Just stupidity..... Yet I'm sure the family all sat down for a nice family afternoon of "Shock and Awe" in Iraq :(.... Stupid parents....  They probably have guns laying around without trigger locks,  and smoke 2 packs a day blowing smoke in the kids faces too.... God only knows the sin's of these fools who cast stones these days for such trite issues...

There are 2 parts of this news that really get me:
filed an indecency complaint last Thursday with the FCC against the NBC network and
NBC and its affiliates should be fined for airing the S-word at a time
So if NBC has to pay say a $3M fine, where does this money go, and how will they recover their losses? Not against the NBC at all, I actually have sympathy for them, but against the stupid parents.

It's disgusting.  agreed !   These parents should get jobs, hobbies and a life.. We aren't condoning the use of expletives of course,  we are just stating, That's life.... THe very parents that are filing this frivolous suit use these words and don't realize it.. God forbid these parents see what their little angels are looking at on their computers... LMAO

The money goes to the FCC.

I was watching a show on the same network last night...

A character was lamenting her married last name...Cox

Her friend asked her, "Why don't you like that name?"

She said, "I love Cox!"--as a lascivious male coworker entered the frame and made some cheesy remark upon hearing her say that.

Prime Time--8-9pm here.

I'm not complaining.  A clever double-entendre like that is my own personal brand of humor.  I mention this only to further elaborate the double-standard.

Thing is Dave,  That's Primetime television these days.  It's not "G" rated,  the news isn't even "G" rated....  We don't live in an antiseptic world where TV is free of sex, violence, and naughty words anymore... If the kid's are old enough to hear the word, understand what they are watching on TV when watching Earnhardt,  They have likely heard that expletive several times a day even by teachers, bus drivers, computer games, and MOST of their friends...  There's too much important stuff going on in life IMHO for parent's to get concerned about this....I'll bet these parents don't have Parental blocks on their Cable TV, and the kids watch Howard Stern when the parents are away, and MTV....Who knows.... They probably look at nasty photo's on the internet too....... What's with these parents....That's extreme..

NBC has agreed to put all future NASCAR races on a 5 second delay.  What more do these whiner's want ?  That sounds like resolution enough to me !   I'd be terrified to teach kids these days..... One slip at school, and the PTA wants to hang you publically for messing up the mind of a little Hellion

I agree with you Steven...

Even when I was coming up through school, I laughed at the censorship that was forced on the broadcast networks.  I heard (or was saying) much worse than that on a daily basis.   And uncut movies were as close as HBO or Showtime.

We have much more than the three-networks-plus-and-independent-or-two-plus-PBS mix of channels that we had in the days of rabbit ears or rooftop antennas.  And society, as a whole, is much better-informed at all age levels, generally speaking.  

But these parent groups...the FCC's "squeaky wheels"...seem to think that if they scream enough for the government to do something, then their kids won't see or hear anything "bad".  I don't think they realize that it's THE PARENT'S influence...MORE THAN ANYTHING THEY SEE ON TV...that shapes who the kids turn out to be.

True Dave.  Kid's know right from wrong.  They can hear a word, say "That's a word that people shouldn't use",  and let it go....You can't hide kids from expletives. If anything should be censored IMHO it's some of the sensational programming that networks might air for "ratings" around sweeps period..  I think the press divulges too much primetime too...and certainly airs things that make our nation look really foolish to other nations...I'm not against certain types or amounts of censorship at certain times... Yet descriptions of violence, graphic images of it,  and sexually explicit descriptions shouldn't be aired primetime either....Quite honestly,  that whole situation where the media went wild with the Clinton situation turned my stomach...It made us look like a nation of idiot's for internationally airing all that dirty laundry IMHO.... Why share that with the whole world ?   Is this a message we want to give everyone regarding the type of superpower our nation is ?
During the WTC incident did they warn adults about some of the content ? I don't recall... THAT is real and NOT "G"..People were jumping off the buildings for God sakes....What a horrible thing for REALLY YOUNG kids to deal with....

JMO....  Freedom of press has advantages too, yet some things just get too crazy with the media frenzy today.

Question for those of you with Children, or those of you that have raised Children:


What are your feelings about some of the situations that are being made public to all... Such as hostage situations in Iraq, Beheadings, etc ?   Should young kids be exposed to these things during daytime television ?   What are your opinions on this ?  Aren't THESE situations that very young kid's aren't ready to deal with ?  I'm asking,  I have my own thoughts, but I'm curious as to what YOUR OWN thought's are on these issues.... Extremely anxiety invoking situations. Should these be aired where young kid's can readily pick up bit's and pieces ?

I have 2 daughters. I'm more worried about sexual content then swearing.
I can't beleive how racy some of these soap operas are and they are on in the middle of the day! I much rather them hear the word sh1t than view a sopa opera.
It's so stupid.

Very true -- everything I've read in this thread. (But I'm not giving back those colored Sharpies I took, that place owed me!  LOL)   We're still going through the after shocks of the Janet Jackson/Superbowl event.  And there hasn't been anything close to "G" rated on TV since maybe Little House On The Prairie.  One expletive aired on TV that was used in an exciting, real life situation isn't worth the effort to complain about at all.

I aggree with everything here... I think they need to fine those parents for being dumb...The shlt that kids here on the playground these days is far more profaine than shlt...

what about those show that bleep the hole and leave the a$$ in the dialog...come on.... these people do need to get a life....

Hmm, let's see. If you watch TV in Europe prime time, there is nudity and adult language on every channel. Does that mean by "protecting" our children from these contents we grow them better here? I'd say BS. Matter of fact, if you talk to most European young people, they are more informed about the world affairs then most American teens. I am betting they can name more states in US then most teens in US.

Are both related? No but just wanted to point out that if we spend all the money we spend on "protecting" our children from what's on TV, we can educate them better and make them better world citizens. Just a thought.
