What are your best or worst memories of camp?

I was a girl scount and we went to camp, I was a slow developer and was still using a training bra....The girls stole it and hung it up in the trees but the litrine....

Same camping trip...Lots and lots of scorpians!!!!!They still scare me!!!

And campfire songs....Besides Kumbaya of coarse!!!  We don't want that to get stuck in our heads

fortunately I didn't have that problem. I did spend mamy moons with the Boy Scouts though. Had some great times though. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone, but my absolute worse times were during camping when the lightning would start. That used to scare the living daylights out of me.

Along the lines of Mizzy's puppy love, I had one myself the summer I turned 13...

I was at a university summer school (TOTAL geek, I know)...and we had older teenagers as counselors...

They threw us a 50s mixer...and I had a black leather jacket, white t-shirt, jeans, and got hold of some Brylcreem  

There was one of the counselors...Krystena...who went by Krysha...OMG...I was GAGA over her after one of the pool sessions...she was 16, tall, leggy, blonde...and a SWEETHEART!!

Well, since I thought I was "so cool" during this mixer, I asked her to dance with me on one of the slow songs...Lionel Richie..."Penny Lover"...and she said YES...I danced with her...and couldn't focus my eyes for about an hour afterwards!!  

GAWD...was that REALLY 21 years ago?    Seems like yesterday...

Unfortunately, I have a not so good camp story.  In seventh grade outdoor school,
the school counselor thought it would be a good idea to put me in with all the rebels, tough guys, whatever you want to call them.  Without telling me ahead of time, he was going to question me afterwards to find out just what kind of illegal activities these guys were upto.  I had an awful time, felt intimidated the whole week, caught
strep throat which later turned into rheumatic fever.  So I missed out on the innocent, fun Kumbaya sessions --- I was too busy coughing because of the cigarette smoke in the cabin.  :(

Does anyone here remember Brylcreem? Does it still exist?

I was pretty young so I had alot of issues.  Separation anxiety, meaning I'd cry at night for my mother. Going out to the woods to play "capture the flag", and not realizing the game was over until a rescue squad with megaphones and helicopters started buzzing over me two days later.... Getting on a horse for the first time nervous, and consequently ending up the friday night camp recreation as a field full of kids are laughing hysterically as I cling sideways for dear life to the animal.  Learning about archery as the kid's pull arrows out've my a$$.

You know, the usual trials and tribs a 36 year old goes thru the first time away from home.

I woulda been too tough to admit to that one..... but YOU said it first, haha..... I'm freaked about lightning too. I can never sleep at night when we have a thunder & lightning storm...... and we have some doozies out here.

My husband and I were Church youth directora a couple of years ago...We would take the kids on retreats (camps)....There were kids from all over...We would take the younger ones out Snipe hunting...We would enlist the help of the older ones to help them beleive in the snipes...How much fun was that..OMG  we had so much fun....

I never minded lightening much until I learned that the sky over head could be clear, and a ground to side of cloud (cloud a bit away) could just strike.. So skies could be seemingly clear overhead when you're in a field,  and you can still get struck.... Ball lightening is also another weird phenom...  It just travels into your open window, and visits you in the bathtub  :shock:  Alot of weird stuff I haven't a clue about technically, but I realized avoiding lightening means more than counting how many seconds between the light flash, and thunder... assuming you can count to ten... between lightening and thunder, it doesn't mean you're safe....

Besides that, I haven't a clue what I'm talking about

Dang, ya made me feel old.  

Went camping lots when I was growing up in Oklahoma, both with the Scouts, and lots with the family.  Tons of stories.  Then, when my sons got old enuf, I took them camping, again with family and with Scouts - but this time as a leader.  And a whole new set of stories.  Then went back again, to train younger guys that were taking their kids camping....

Of course, there were lots of strictly 'adult' only camping trips, but that would be a whole nuther thread.  I guess I would be safe talking about some of the things we did cause I beleive the statute of limitations has finally run out.........

Start a thread about the adult only camp !  Just keep the descriptions esoteric, pix too, of course they must remain esoteric !

I went to band camp - yes band camp

I played the tuba.

Anyway, my fond memory is when we had our party at the
end of camp. They had a dance competition and this guy and I won.
The funny part is I was this little girl who played the tuba and he was this
big kid that played the flute.  LMAO

I know it sounds odd that I played the tuba.

It was a bit embarrassing in high school. I was in a rock band too, so
that kind of made up for it.

I'll have you all know I was 1st in state my senior year in orchestra and concert
band and had a scholarship to college. I've played all over the United States with my tuba. I've even played with a pit ochestra for The sound of Music, fiddler on the roof, Hello Dolly and Annie. I remember The Sound of music the most. We used to get so bored in the pit we'd make up different words to the songs. We used to sing the sound of mucus.

I haven't played for years now - I'd probably get a big fat lip if I tried.

...Of course she was also one of two people in Illinois that played the Tuba too. Colleges must fulfill a minority quota.  This naturally includes certain ethnicities, and tuba players.  LMAO





   OK,   now were you roofing,  or trying to impress guys by playing "If I were a rich man" on the tuba telling them you were Zero Mostel's understudy on broadway?  LOL

Just kidding...  Realistically good tuba players have always been desireable in orchestra's... It's not an easy instrument, yet many don't stick with the instrument either.  To play the instrument well requires amazing embechure and physical control, and within itself, it's register doesn't make it an instrument a person prone to enjoying more melodic substance would gravitate towards,  it's almost more percussive.. I suppose, than melodic, similar to string bass, or bass instruments, ties percussion and melody.. It's fascinating because it really gives great rudimentary concepts of all of music,  you learn how it's layered from the bottom up..meaning you learn to hear bass clef aspects of music many other's never learn to listen for... It's also a VERY large instrument, and not the easiest to lug around, it's expensive, and vulnerable to getting banged up  I played string bass, and that was no picnic to lug around... It wasn't exactly portable like a flute or violin... The sausaphone is the same register as the standard Tuba, yet I think theirs also a contra-tuba too or something,  been years since I studied the orchestral instruments....  I like the euphonium and Baritone horn sounds... There are several ranges of TUba I believe... At least there was... I think the euphonium is like a higher register tuba...  I need to look into this category of brass-wind instruments,,, I'd hate to forget everything I once learned about the orchestra....

I want to listen for a few pieces highlighting tuba,  because of breath control aspects, I'd imagine faster melodic pieces can be extremely tough with all that tubing to blow thru,  yet I've even forgotten how high the range of the tuba can get assuming a person has enough embechure control... Believe it or not, it can be a very pretty instrument,,  I was just goofing early on... It's just REALLY tough to play well.

Wow!!! Summer Sleep-away Camps.! What memories!

I went to Sleep-away camps from age 9 to 15. I had a blast. I have so many stories, I don't even know where to begin.... The 1 AM Raids (both Social and Destructive), Color Wars, Campfires, Arts and Crafts, Tie-Dye T-Shirts (my Mother nearly killed me one Summer when I came back with ALL of nmy T-Shirts tie-dyed), Hiking.

Here goes one of my more humorous memories. One day we (my Bunkmates) had the privaledge of being scheduled for a Day-Hike to town (where the prize of the day was buying the best Cherry Lime Rickeies you could ever have). Anyway, while hiking, some of us had to go to the Bathroom. Since we were not near anything, we went in the Woods. One of the guys had to take a crap, and he used leaves for Toilet paper. It ended up that the leaves were Poison Ivy (discovered a few hours later). Anyway. the best was when all 15 of us escorted our Bunkmate to the Nurse's office. It was hysterical to see the Nurse's reaction when she was treating him... especially when she asked the unavoidable (and much anticipated) questions of "How did you get it down there?")!!!

There was one Summer (my last one at Summer Camp), where I was so sick the entire Summer, that I couldn't go swimming most of the Summer. First I had developed a bad rash of bug bites up and down my legs (so I was ozzing with Calamyne Lotion), and then I had gotten Swimmer's Ear. So, to compensate, I spent most of my time at the Arts and Crafts Shacck. I worked that instructer the whole Summer. I had tried String Art for the first time, and then I ended up teaching others how to do it (through the encouragement of the Arts and Crafts Counselor). I had her going to town for all sorts of supplies (for things she never thought of teaching us campers)... things like Felt, Wood, Nails, Colored Threads  (materials I needed for the String Art), Molds for Candle Making. There were so many things I made that Summer.

Yeah,  Swimmer's ear is agonizing. I used to get that all the time, infections and abscesses.  Even got empitiego at camp from bug bites,  not sure how it was transmitted, but in the fall the school nurse sent me home because it's quite infectious... Empitiego is nasty, twenty minutes out've the hour with a hot hot rag on the scabs...anyway,,,, Another camp adventure.... Poison Ivy was a seasonal thing at home.. Our yards were loaded with that stuff..... Never realized how itching can be so severe it's excruciating until contracting poison Ivy and Sumac. A whole new type of pain
