Thanks to everyone for sharing their info. This site is amazing!
We're retiring and want to become KJ's and DJ's on the road travelling in our RV.  In the 80's, we played once in awhile with a friend that had a solo act.  When he left, we acquired the equipment. We have a Crate 6 channel mixer, Crate speakers, and 4 Shure mikes that we'd like to use for KJ.     Would you recommend starting with a CDG player, (if so, what kind) or computer?   Also, we have a 17" LCD computer monitor that we'd like to use.  Would a VGA adapter/converter work well enough for the graphics if we get a player that doesn't have VGA outputs.

to be honest, I'd still start out with cdg player... only to get the feel of it.

you gotta REALLY know what you're doing with a laptop or pc...

I run a 19" LCD computer monitor for my karaoke. I purchaced an RCA to VGA converter box for $70 and it does the job perfectly! In fact, the LCD screen contrast makes the karaoke lyrics and VCD graphics look extremely good!!

I would have to agree with Knightshow. Unless you have a decent knowledge of computers you should stay with discs initially. If you are travelling by RV you will probably not do that many shows per week to justify using a computer.

Computer karaoke can be a pain in the a** if you do not have the knowledge of what to do when your computer is acting up or your setup is not right. Troubleshooting skills are very important.

Give the discs a try first.

You may need to convert the SVGA to VGA...

I'd go computer of course.  I have used a computer system so long, I may not remember how to do the disc thing LOL.
