I'm trying to compile a list of songs that guests "expect" to hear at Wedding Receptions... Celebration YMCA Mony, Mony We are Family Special Dance Songs (Cha-Cha & Electric Slide, Chicken Dance, etc...) Baby Got Back (seems to always be requested, am I right?) Please add to the list! |

During the wedding consult the following things should be established. Depending on the age of the crowd certain genres should be favored. The bride usually knows both families and has an idea what type of music she prefers. Determine the song for the bride groom dance and the bride father dance. Ask how she wants the newlyweds introduced or announced and if certain background music should be playing for cake cut toss etc... Usually todays weddings consist of a sprinking of karaoke singers and one of the concerns is playing DJ and letting people sing Inform then that you will take requests for karaoke and sandwitch them in between songs no problem.. Also ask if they want you will take requests for DJ or dance music. At teen parties I have actually let a teen use the seach function and que up songs for DJ and fill. These playlists are then saved for the night and can be used for future parties. Essentialy the music played is entirely up to the crowd and if they are not putting in requests the audience must be read as to energy during certain songs. The best way is see what songs fill up the dance floor.. |

The religious believes of the "majority” of people / age group / geographical location will influence the type of music. I have learned one lesson whilst playing live or running KJ shows at a wedding. Learn to read people! The wrong song choice can blow up in your face, but to have a “list”? Nope, ain’t gonna work.

I'll echo the "it depends on the crowd" theme. Find out about genre and any favs from Bride, Groom etc. and any things they really don't want to hear. Some things that seem to go over ok are good Dance tunes - Disco era and danceable rock. (Of course, if its a country crowd this will only partially work) Some suggestions tho-- - Songs from Saturday Night Fever soundtrack - Boogie Shoes, Stayin' Alive, You Should be Dancing - Earth, Wind and Fire - September, Fantasy - Commodores - Brick House, Sweet Love would work for a slow one (but its a bit longish I think), Lady - ZZ Top - "Legs" if you're doing the garter thing with the bride, Sharp Dressed Man may work for a danceable song. - Billy Joel - some of these work too (No not Captain Jack )... - Luther Vandross - for a slow one or two. Here and Now (is that what its called?) - Sting/Police - Every little thing she does, - A good Polka can get folks going too - May want to try a Waltz to for slow ones That's about all I can think of off the top of my head... hope that helps... |

Ok wallyd2 You bring up a good question that has many answers. The bottom line is a flexible format with a good foundation of "standards" is the best wat to go. you'll need to read you crowd for the flow of the night but with a wedding you can almost bet that you will have 3 or 4 different age groups present. Look at the billboard top hits or most requested songs from your local radio station to get your foundation then sprinkle in mood changing songs to give your show your own flavor. No song choice is wrong if your crowd is happy and dancing, but don't stick to a format if you see it ain't working "like beating a dead horse" be flexible and take a few chances now and then with your song selection. Now with that said i think you were looking for some recommendations on songs to play. Heres some songs that are NOT standards but work just as well. This is not a bad way for us DJ's to try some new songs we might not have thought to play, ADD to this list::::::::: Intro to the room: Sing A Song - Earth wind & fire I love you Always forever - Lewis Donna Children - Robert Miles Searchin' - Luther Vandross Slow ( Ballad ): At Last - Etta James - Celin Dion Always & Forever - Luther Vandross Open Arms - MARIAH CAREY Stardust - Nat King Cole Love Of A Lifetime - Firehouse Fast (Party Music ): You'll Be Mine Party Time - Gloria Estefan Follow The Leader - The Soca Boys Classic Disco: One More Shot - C-bank Walk Right Now - The Jacksons Makin' It - David Naughton Shake Your Groove Thing - Peaches & Herb Party Rock: Are U Gonna Be My Girl - Jet Hope There's something there you might try and play. |

You can go the other way; ask the bride family what songs are NOT TO BE PLAYED |

Badsinger, Your 100% right any party or event should have a play & don't play list provided by the client. That added with your foundation sets and a good read of the crowd is the way most of us program music for awedding or anyother event. Cocktail music: Jazz: Anything from Spyro Gyra or Chick Corea |

You know what....... all the songs in those list are common.... as a dj i would love to know what some of you other Dj's are using to seat your guest, what you play between the first dance and the toast, after the cake is cut if there is no parent dances What do you play? I haven't heard every song made nor do i remember half of them any more, I just thought you all might have something to add maybe catch a New Song to use. |

One thing that's always a hit during the orthodox Jewish, or Catholic receptions. Everyone 60 and older LOVES nothing more than a John Valby set ! Spruce up your friends wedding with a John Valby presentation of their favorite songs ! |

First I want to thank everyone for their contribution to this thread, that helps a lot! I primarily was looking for some new songs to add to my wedding playlists that I haven't thought of and you guys came through very well. In the time before and after the toast and cake cutting I just resume whatever background music (or genre) the wedding couple had picked out for dinner. |
