I don't know how anyone else feels about this since the majority of us sing cover songs for the Showcase, but does anyone write their own lyrics that they've submitted and want to share? I know I have lyrics that I'd love to have critiqued by ya'll... just a thought. [glow=white]Amanda[/glow] |

Thats pretty much all I sub on SS. Once in awhile I send one of a regular karoake song. But primarily I only send original compositions(blues mostly, some swing and jazz) of my lyrics and vocal arrangements recorded over either karaoke instrumentals or blues/swing or jazz instrumentals. Blues is usually Chicago, west coast or jump blues. |

I have not subbed anything I have personally written, but I have subbed a song that was written by a good friend of mine. He wrote both the music and lyrics. He took a rough recording of the music along with the sheet score to KMA studio in Nashville where he had studio musicians make a track of the music. I then recorded the song at a local studio here in Texas. I actually get radio air play on this song quite often and he was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame about 3 months later. Not because I recorded his song, but because of his success at writing. Not long ago, I subbed that song here on SS for everyone to hear.--Mike |

Well, I don't want to take someone else's music, but I can't write my own either. I know it's really hard to judge or critique lyrics by just reading them, not listening to them. I usually just have my bf sit down with me after I write some, and he lets me know what he thinks. He usually just says that I write too poetic; that is, I naturally write in iambic pentameter, rhymed verse, etc. It's kinda been hard for me to stray away from the "poem-y" sounding stanzas. Here's a set that I actually wrote recently. I add notes to myself in sometimes, like where I'd want an instrumental, or whatever... "Was once a little girl Surrounded by a troubled world Reassurance always seemed Forever far away Promises you never kept I’d sit out on the back porch step I still remember, pushing back Tears I grew to hate And I don’t want to make you hurt the way I did I know you feel your own pain too But I just can’t spend my life Believing all your lies I love you Dad Yes, I still do A letter came in the mail today Postmark some prison in the U.S.A Another story, it’s not your fault Guess you haven’t changed (Instrumental) Through all these years I kept my anger locked inside And now I’m faced with growing up I thought I’d cried all the tears that I could cry But lately I’ve been crying way too much And with this pain there comes a truth I can’t heal the broken you But I can pray And I can say I love you" |

great songs you two!! Here's one I wrote about a friend of mine who passed away in her sleep after being married just 6 months.... she was two months pregnant. Her two best friends are UNBELIEVABLE violinists and they played at her funeral. She used to sing along with the violins regularily at church, but at her funeral they just played. Crying Strings I’ll never forget that day When my mama told me the news She was like a sister and she’d only just been wed There inside her belly was a budding little boy She went to sleep one night, but she would never wake Oh, the violin, it played And the bow, it slowly swayed The echo of her voice still rings As we listen to the crying strings I remember all those faces Long with tears and sorrow And the flowers around her picture framed her pretty face In her casket was a teddy bear From her mama with a note ‘This is for you, little one because Grandma loves you too’ Oh, the violin, it played And the bow, it slowly swayed The echo of her voice still rings As we listen to the crying strings Well I know she’s watches down on us no matter what life brings But I still shed a tear for her when I hear those crying strings Oh, the violin, it played And the bow, it slowly swayed The echo of her voice still rings I know she’s in those crying strings |

you guys should find an intrumental track and record them and sub them to SS. Just hook up your karaoke player to the puter and then record them on AUdacity and save/export them as MP3's. It works really well. Then the next step is to make your own karaoke disc with your own words on the screen and own pictures in the background. Karaoke Builder Studio will do that. I'm working on learning how to do that so I can go out and Karaoke to my own swing and blues compositions---like the Old Brer Rabbit song. |

Crystal, I love the part of your song where it talks about the violins. Very sweet. I do have audacity, that's what I record my subs with, but I just can't see taking another songs instrumental track and putting my words to it... Idk maybe I should try it. I'm not very familiar with swing, but I like the lyrics to your song too Kurt. It has a very upbeat feeling to it. It sounds like something I would listen to. |
